International Women's Day observed in Malaysia.

On the eve of International Women's Day, 80 women representing five women's groups in Malaysia, including Persatuan Sahabat Wanita, CAW's network member, marched from Petaling Jaya to Penang to attend the Women's Day celebration. The group had organized the visitation in order to strengthen its networking. During their meeting with some reporters before their departure to Penang, they demanded that the women's groups be consulted before any guideline on the prevention and handling of sexual harassment at the workplace is drawn up. They said that they have been handling several complaints and their input would help the Human Resource Ministry formulate a comprehensive set of guidelines. This demand by the women's group was in response to the announcement by the Human Resource Minister Datuk Lim Ah Lek that in a month time a code would be ready on guidelines about the establishment and implementation of in-house preventive and redress mechanisms for dealing with sexual harassment.

Demographic trends in Vietnam.

"Asia's four ¿little dragons' (South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan) have in common not only an economic boom, but also the same rapid demographic transition. How does Vietnam, whose economy is poised for a take-off, stand in this respect? In an attempt to answer this question, [the authors] study the growing corpus of information which a number of ad hoc surveys have added to the 1979 and 1989 population censuses."

Poisson regression with a surrogate X: an analysis of vitamin A and Indonesian children's mortality.

"A Poisson regression model with a surrogate X variable is proposed to help to assess the efficacy of vitamin A in reducing child mortality in Indonesia. In a recent community trial, the mortality rate in villages receiving vitamin A supplementation was 35% less than in control villages. However, at base-line, control villages were found to have slightly higher rates of xerophthalmia, an ocular disease caused by vitamin A deficiency. It was therefore desirable to adjust the mortality comparison for base-line vitamin A levels as indicated by xerophthalmia prevalence. This paper presents a parametric errors-in-X regression model developed for this purpose. Likelihood methods for fitting and inference are discussed. The model is illustrated on the Indonesian data set."
