Correlation analysis of units recorded in the cat dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus.

Spike activity was simultaneously recorded from pairs of units consisting of both optic tract fibers and relay cells in the cat dLGN. The unit pairs were classified with regard to the types of receptive fields involved, the relative location of receptive fields, and their occular drive. Statistical dependencies between the discharge patterns of the simultaneously observed units were assessed by computing their auto- and crosscorrelogram during a period of maintained discharge. Two distinctly different types of statistical dependence were observed. Unit pairs having like and overlapping receptive field centers exhibited statistical dependencies manifested in their crosscorrelograms by a peak near the origin. Conversely, unit pairs having opposite and overlapping receptive field centers were characterized by a prominent valley in their crosscorrelograms near the origin. These statistical dependencies are inferred to represent functional interaction most probably occurring in the retina and characterized by a common element exerting an influence on both units.

Immunohistochemical versus biochemical estrogen-receptor and progesterone-receptor analysis: correlation with histological parameters.

Human breast carcinomas were evaluated for estrogen and progesterone receptors by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal anti-receptor antibodies (n = 267) and by cytosol steroid-binding assays (n = 212). The estrogen and progesterone receptor contents of the tumors correlated with histological features of differentiation, such as histological and nuclear grade, and with the amount of tumor necrosis and lymphoid infiltration. The correlation of immunohistochemically determined steroid receptor values with histological characteristics was somewhat better than that of biochemically assessed concentrations.

A correlation analysis between bone formation rate and bioelectric potentials in rabbit tibia.

The origin of the bioelectric potentials in unstressed living bones is still an open question. Blood-flow in vessels, stationary potentials on peripheral nerves, muscle injury potentials, and viability of bone cells are claimed to be possible sites of origin of the electric potentials recorded on bone surface. The present data show that the topographic quantitative distribution of tetracycline labeling at sequential levels of rabbit tibia and the distribution pattern of the bioelectric potentials in this bone are significantly superimposable. This coincidence of bone formation rates and bioelectric potentials seems to support the view that the latter are in some way linked with the laying down of new bone.

Radiological signs of osteitis around extramedullary metal implants. A radiographic-microbiological correlative analysis in rabbit tibiae after local inoculation of Staphylococcus aureus.

Radiographic changes in the early stages of osteomyelitis may be subtle and, especially after plate osteosynthesis, frequently missed. A previously described experimental model of local bacterial infection was used in an attempt to determine the reliability of specific changes on conventional radiographs for the diagnosis of osteitis after metal-plate implantation and subsequent inoculation of Staphylococcus aureus in rabbit tibiae. Roentgenograms of the treated limbs were evaluated, and seven radiographic parameters, to which numerical scores were assigned, were determined for each bone. Our results substantiate the conclusion that a radiographically verified periosteal reaction is a constant and early skeletal feature of acute osteomyelitis and has the strongest association to the microbiological results (P < 0.05), emphasising its high predictive value. Plate implantation does not notably impede the diagnosis of osteomyelitis. An association between the amount of inoculated bacteria and the extent of radiographic changes could be found. The results of this present study closely resemble those described in man and suggest that this model may be useful for future experimental investigations in determining a score judging the severity of osseous involvement in local bacterial infection after plate osteosynthesis.

EDSS correlated analysis of median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

Median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded in 30 patients with multiple sclerosis. The examined patients had an expanded disability status scale (EDSS) between 0 and 6. The primary cortical potential N20, the subcortical potentials P14, N13b, N13a and the peripheral potential P9 were recorded simultaneously. In 5 patients normal SEP were observed (group 1), and in 6 patients there were consecutive disturbances of the somatosensory pathway (group 3). In 19 patients subcortical potentials were abnormal or absent while the following potentials were normal or identified which pattern corresponds to amplification within CNS structures (group 2). The EDSS of groups 1 and 2 were similar and lower than the EDSS of group 3, which indicates that amplification mechanisms could represent a positive prognostic factor in SEP diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Worry and obsessional symptoms: a correlational analysis.

Several studies have suggested that worry and obsessional symptoms are systematically associated. In the present study, the relationship between worry and obsessional symptoms was confirmed. Measures included a worry content measure, a worry visual analogue scale, a modification of the everyday checking behaviours scale, and the MOCI. Worry was found to be more consistently associated with checking and doubting, than washing and slowness. It is suggested that worry and obsessional symptoms both occur in response to stress. In addition, it is suggested that worry and checking are functionally similar, and Generalised Anxiety Disorder may represent a 'cognitive' variant of obsessional checking.
