A case of multiple abdominal haemangiomas (mesentery, intestine, liver) in a 19 year-old patient is described. The anomalies, at first incidentally found during appendectomy, were confirmed by angiographies and vascular surgery. Ascites and bleeding esophageal varices developed in further course. A short review of literature and classifications is given.

Modified methods of making external fistulas for laparoscopy in 72 patients with tumors of digestion organs are described. An assessment of such fistulas with respect to their functional role, localization of the tumor process and other conditions is given.

In recent years, epidemiological and molecular studies revealed very important new insights into the development of tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. Above all, certain forms of nutrition and molecular genetic features and events are responsible for tumor occurrence. This article tries to give a short review of the most important recent findings in this field of research.
Serum copper and zinc were simultaneously determined by ion-exchange chromatography (IC) in 35 normal volunteers and 45 patients with benign diseases or different stage cancers of digestive tract. No significant differences of serum Cu, Zn (both expressed in mumol/L) and Cu/Zn ratio were found among normal volunteers, patients with benign diseases and those with stage I or II cancer. While in the group of stage III and IV cancer patients, the mean of serum Cu (26.5 +/- 1.4 mumol/L) and Cu/Zn ratio (2.25 +/- 0.16) increased significantly (P < 0.01) and that of serum Zn (11.8 +/- 0.5 mumol/L) decreased markedly (P < 0.05). Our results showed that serum Cu, Zn and Cu/Zn ratio was of no help in detecting early stage cancers and in differentiating them from benign diseases but was useful in predicting stages of cancers before operation for a better choice of therapy.
An association between venous thrombosis and cancer was first suggested by Armand Trousseau in 1865 and subsequently confirmed by a number of studies. It was therefore concluded that laboratory tests, chest radiograph and abdominal ultrasonography should be routinely performed on all patients with deep venous thrombosis. The aim of our retrospective study was to detect the clinical relevance of abdominal ultrasonography findings, especially tumors, in patients with deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities. All patients with deep venous thrombosis hospitalized between 1990 and 1994 in the department of internal medicine of our hospital were registered. Only patients were included in the study who (1) underwent abdominal ultrasonography in our department; (2) had confirmed acute deep venous thrombosis; (3) had no known malignancy. Malignancies which appeared after hospital stay were detected by telephone inquiry among patients and general practitioners in February 1995. Of the 371 patients with deep venous thrombosis 104 were included in the study. We found abnormal ultrasound findings in 68 patients (65%), but only in 23 patients were the findings of clinical relevance, in 12 of whom (12%) there was a connection with deep venous thrombosis. Ultrasound detected 3 malignancies (3%). The overall rate of newly detected malignancies was 10 (10%), of which 6 were detected during hospitalization and 4 afterwards. Based on these results we can recommend routine performance of abdominal ultrasonography on patients with deep venous thrombosis. A literature overview is given.

The tight junction seals cells together at a subapical location and functionally separates the plasma membrane into an apical and a basolateral domain. This junction is one of the most characteristic structural markers of the polarized epithelial cell. Recently, occludin has been identified as an integral transmembrane protein localizing at the tight junction and directly associated with ZO-1, an undercoat-constitutive cytoplasmic protein. We have investigated occludin expression in conjunction with ZO-1 in normal epithelia and cancers of human digestive tract by immunostaining with a new antibody raised against human occludin. In the normal simple columnar epithelium, occludin was expressed together with ZO-1 as a single line at the apical cell border. However, in the esophagus, which has a stratified squamous epithelium, no occludin expression could be detected, but ZO-1 was expressed in the spinous layer. As for cancers, both occludin and ZO-1 showed the same expression in differentiated adenocarcinoma cells as in normal epithelium, but in poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas, the expression of these two proteins was reduced. There was significant correlation between tumor differentiation and expression of these proteins. These results suggest that occludin, together with ZO-1, is involved in the formation of gland-like structures. In addition, occludin expression can serve as a histopathological indicator for differentiation in gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas.

We have surveyed a population size of 6633315 from Diseases Surveillance Points (DSP) system in Gansu province for the last eleven years. The annual birth rate was 18.20% with an annual standard mortality rate 545.80/10(5). The annual standard mortality for male and female were 607.53/10(5) and 483.29/10(5) respectively. The major causes of death were Respiratory system diseases, Cardiovascular diseases, Neoplasms, Injuries, Digestive system diseases, Pediatric diseases, Infectious diseases in sequence. In eleven years, there seemed to be a rising trend in the mortalities of following diseases as: Cerebrovascular diseases, Ischemic heart diseases, Rheumatic fever and heart disease, Lung Cancer, Liver Cancer, Cancer of the Esophagus, Intestinal cancer, Cervical cancer, Injury, Congenital abnomalities, to different degrees. However, an obvious descending trend on the morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases was moticed. The average life expectancy was 71.05 years in DSP, with male 69.57 years, and female 72.72 years. Diseases with higher PYLL were Injuries, Neoplasms, Respiratory system diseases and the like. Data suggested not only the prevention andcontrol of infectious diseases, but also the surveillance of injuries and the prevention and control of chronic diseases should be strengthened.
