The increasing interest in the parasites of man in the Federal Reublic of Germany is connected with the unbounded keeness of German people to travel. They favor southern regions with warm climates which are usually infested with parasites. Thus the general practitioner is nowadays confronted in his daily routine with "imported" pathogenic organisms and diseases as yet unknown to him or with which he need not have reckoned in the past. Furthermore, new information now exists on the development of well-known parasites of our regions, which can be pathogenic to man. Fortunately, new reliable drugs have come on the market, rendering some parasitic diseases harmless.
The paper summarizes the results of the 1994-1998 activities in preparing sanitary legislative documents and standard guidelines that define strategies and tactics to prevent parasitic diseases in the Russian Federation under the present conditions. Moreover, it lists the guidelines that are being developed and planned for approval in 1999-2000.
Although significant advances have been mode during the past 20 years, a better understanding of the orchestration of the immune response against a parasite candidate vaccine is still required for preparing vaccines which can induce the acquisition and the persistence of sterile immunity, without producing side effects in humans. This was, among others, one conclusion of the discussions between Thesis students and scientists. Only some aspects of the different steps of immune responses (recognition, protective effector mechanisms, cell regulation, cytokine activities, immunopathology, parasite escape mechanisms) are here reviewed. They are mainly related to malano and schistosomiasis, but also to other parasitic diseases, for which several experimental models have been developed.
