The frequency of translocations induced in diploid conidia of Aspergillus nidulans by gamma rays was much higher than that of recessive mutants involving a single chromosome. More than half of the surviving nuclei contained viable translocations at radiation doses within the range normally employed for induction of mutants in microorganisms.

Exposure to x-rays of low intensity immediately arouses the sleeping rat. Activation of the central nervous system, indicated by behavioral and heart rate responses, depends upon the rat but not the dose of exposure. The arousal reaction is not dependent upon direct visual stimulation. The nervous system is probably directly sensitive to ionizing radiation.
A total of 102 strains of Clostridium botulinum (56 strains of type A, 43 type B, and 3 nontoxigenic strains which could not be typed) was examined for resistance to gamma rays. When these organisms were suspended in neutral phosphate buffer in concentrations of 10(4) spores per tube, the threshold sterilizing dose appeared to be 1.4 Mrad. Partial survival to 1.4 Mrad was shown by 10.7% of the type A strains, 18.6% of the type B strains, and one of three nontoxigenic strains. Over-all, type A strains indicated higher radioresistance than type B strains, although there was overlapping. Representatives of the most resistant strains had D values of 0.317 to 0.336 Mrad; the D values of an intermediate group were 0.224 to 0.253 Mrad, and the most sensitive strain studied, 51B, had a D value of 0.129 Mrad. The radioresistance of Putrefactive Anaerobe 3679, strain S-2, was comparable to the intermediate C. botulinum group (D = 0.209).

The relation between survival and dose of ultraviolet (UV) light or X rays was, with only one exception, nonlinear for late-log-phase cultures of four species of Rhizobium. The ld(90) for different bacterial strains ranged from 400 to 3,000 ergs per mm(2) for UV treatment, and from 3.0 to 7.5 kr for X-ray treatment. Minor existing differences in response to some antibacterial compounds (disc tests) were usable as secondary markers for genetic experiments. Spontaneous and radiation-induced mutants, resistant to high levels of several antibiotics, notably dihydrostreptomycin and erythromycin, were isolated for primary marker purposes. A significant phenotypic lag for mutation to dihydrostreptomycin resistance was noted for UV-irradiated cells. The UV-induced frequency exceeded the X-ray-induced frequency by a factor of at least three, at a comparable level of lethality. No significant change in the symbiotic capability was observed in rhizobial strains marked with antibiotics resistance.
