OBJECTIVE: To identify and address risks threatening hospital-based radiography programs and to report conditions that contribute to their survival. METHOD: Program directors of the 201 hospital-sponsored radiography programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology were surveyed via questionnaire. Program demographic data are reported for comparison. RESULTS: More than 90% of the survey respondents believe their programs will remain viable over the next 5 years, indicating a possible plateau in program closures. A majority of the program directors cite financial concerns as a risk factor. The study results suggest a need for additional inquiry covering inter-related groups.
The maldistribution of health professionals between metropolitan and rural areas is a well-documented fact. The preceptorship has been hypothesized as a means of alleviating this problem. Upon completion of a preceptorship in radiologic technology, the students completed a questionnaire concerning values and interpretations derived from the preceptorship. This paper describes the results of the preceptorship and questionnaire.
Having previously written something about the 'roots' of the radiologic technology profession, the author now concentrates on where it goes from here. What are the implications of the demand for accountability on the educational process? How does it adjust to changing technology? What are the future career prospects? How does the profession meet manpower challenges? Who pays the bills? Because the future cannot be completely defined in the present, this article necessarily asks more questions than it answers, but seeks input into the decision-making process from those who are most affected by it--radiologic technologists.
