Scanning electron microscope study on the biodegradation of IOL and suturing materials.

The biodegradation of the IOLs (27 cases: mainly prepupillary lens with pupillary fixation, irido-capsular and angle supported lens and a J loop lens for posterior chamber lens) and suturing materials of four cases have been studied by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The longest duration in the eye was 7.5 years and the shortest 0.3 year. The materials used for optics were PMMA with the exception of one case of glass. The materials for haptics were Nylon 6, Isot.PP, PMMA, PVDF, Polyimid and Pt-Ir. The suturing materials were Nylon 6 and Isot.PP. Nylon 6 degraded in the eye and Isot.PP degraded in the corneal tissue. But no biodegradation was observed in Isot.PP, PMMA, PVDF and Pt-Ir in the eye. In our investigations, biodegradation has some relationship to age (over 50 years old), duration (within 7.5 years) and inflammation of the eye, but ultimately biodegradation will depend on the individual situation. Degradation occurs most easily in the curved portion of Nylon 6.

[Biospecific adsorption chromatography of phospholipase A2 from different sources].

Methods of biospecific adsorption chromatography of phospholipase A2 obtained from porcine pancreas and Naja naja oxiana, Vipera ursini renardi, Vespa orientalis venoms were developed. Granulated polyamide with covalently linked phosphatidylethanolamine were used as an affinity adsorbent. Chemical inertness of linked phosphatidylethanolamine to the hydrolytic action of phospholipase A2 and its high affinity for biospecific complexes are shown. Forms of phospholipase A2 different in their affinity for an immobilized substrate was isolated by biospecific adsorption chromatography. The role of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions in formation of enzyme-ligand complexes was studied.

Sutures inserted into the gastric wall an experimental study.

Thirty gastrotomies were performed in 15 dogs using 2/0 atraumatic needles. Various kinds of threads were used: Dexon as an absorbable suture, Black Perlon and Black Braided Silk as nonabsorbable sutures. Ten suture rows were made with each material. Single-row interrupted sutures were made with no suture in the mucosa. No suture insufficiency occurred. Dexon proved to be the most suitable material, although the nonabsorbable sutures did not cause complications, either.

[Histomorphologic changes following plastic repair of defects in spinal dura mater with a capron strip in complicated experimental fractures of the spine].

A wide incision of the dura mater of the spinal cord helps to inspect the subdural space in detail. If there is a defect in the dura mater, or if it is impossible to suture it due to edema and swelling of the spinal cord, it is rational to resort to plastic replacement with a band of capron mesh which resolves completely by the end of the third year after the surgical intervention.

[Determination of lysine amidase and alpha-aminocaprolactam hydrolase activities in cell-free extracts of Cryptococcus sp].

he methods for detecting two activities, i. e. lysine amidase and alpha-aminocaprolactam hydrolase ones, in crude extracts of Cryptococcus sp. are described. The method for registering lysine amidase activity is based on the ability of Cu(II) complex to absorb at 230 nm. The products of lysine and alpha-aminocaprolactam interactions with o-phthalaldehyde in the presence of mercaptoethanol possess different molar absorption at 340 nm. This fact was used for detecting alpha-aminocaprolactam hydrolase activity. The main merit of the methods is the possibility to register the data on the course of the reaction without preliminary chromatographic separation of the reaction products and reactants. The methods proposed do not require expensive enzymes, such as lysine decarboxylase and lysine-alpha-ketoglutarate-epsilon-aminotransferase, which are used for the quantitative estimation of lysine.
