Emission factors and importance of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, PCNs, PAHs and PM10 from the domestic burning of coal and wood in the U.K.

This paper presents emission factors (EFs) derived for a range of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) when coal and wood were subject to controlled burning experiments, designed to simulate domestic burning for space heating. A wide range of POPs were emitted, with emissions from coal being higher than those from wood. Highest EFs were obtained for particulate matter, PM10, (approximately 10 g/kg fuel) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (approximately 100 mg/ kg fuel for sigmaPAHs). For chlorinated compounds, EFs were highest for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) being less abundant. EFs were on the order of 1000 ng/kg fuel for sigmaPCBs, 100s ng/ kg fuel for sigmaPCNs and 100 ng/kg fuel for sigmaPCDD/Fs. The study confirmed that mono- to trichlorinated dibenzofurans, Cl1,2,3DFs, were strong indicators of low temperature combustion processes, such as the domestic burning of coal and wood. It is concluded that numerous PCB and PCN congeners are routinely formed during the combustion of solid fuels. However, their combined emissions from the domestic burning of coal and wood would contribute only a few percent to annual U.K. emission estimates. Emissions of PAHs and PM10 were major contributors to U.K. national emission inventories. Major emissions were found from the domestic burning for Cl1,2,3DFs, while the contribution of PCDD/F-sigmaTEQ to total U.K. emissions was minor.

Rhodium-catalyzed dehydrocoupling of the sterically encumbered phosphine-borane adduct tBu(2)PH.BH(3): synthesis of the linear dimers tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(3) and tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(2)Cl.

The dehydrocoupling of the sterically hindered phosphine-borane adduct tBu(2)PH.BH(3) above 140 degrees C is catalyzed by the rhodium complexes [Rh(1,5-cod)(2)][OTf] or Rh(6)(CO)(16) to give the four-membered chain tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(3) (1), which was isolated in 60% yield and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Thermolysis of 1 in the temperature range 175-180 degrees C led to partial decomposition and the formation of tBu(2)PH.BH(3). When the dehydrocoupling of tBu(2)PH.BH(3) was performed in the presence of [[Rh(mu-Cl)(1,5-cod)](2)] or RhCl(3) hydrate, the chlorinated compound tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(2)Cl (2) was formed which could not be obtained free of 1. The molecular structures of tBu(2)PH.BH(3), tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(3) (1), and tBu(2)PH-BH(2)-tBu(2)P-BH(2)Cl (2) together with 1 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Activation barriers to meso-aryl group rotation in titanyl tetraaryltetrapyrroles. An investigation of the out-of-plane flexibility of hydroporphyrins.

The free-base and titanyl (Ti(IV)O) complexes of meso-tetratolyl- and meso-tetra(3,5-xylyl)hydroporphyrins were synthesized and characterized. Metalation of the hydroporphyrins with titanium was achieved by reaction of the lithium salts of the hydroporphyrin with TiCl(4). Other methods used to metalate porphyrins with titanium required harsher reaction conditions and led to substantial oxidative dehydrogenation of the macrocycle when applied to hydroporphyrins. The titanyl group differentiates the two faces of the macrocycle and consequently the two sides of the meso-aryl groups, which are tilted nearly perpendicular to the macrocycle plane. The (1)H NMR signals for the nonequivalent ortho protons and nonequivalent meta protons averaged on the NMR time scale at elevated temperatures due to aryl group rotation. Activation barriers for aryl group rotation in the para-substituted and meta-disubstituted titanyl hydroporphyrin complexes and in related titanyl porphyrin complexes were determined from variable-temperature NMR spectra and ranged from 15.6 to 18.4 kcal/mol. In chlorin compounds, barriers for rotation of aryl groups located between a pyrrole and a pyrroline (reduced) ring are greater than those of aryl groups located between two pyrrole rings. Comparisons of barriers in complexes with different macrocycle saturation levels show that the increased barriers for aryl groups adjacent to pyrroline rings cannot be attributed solely to the increased steric bulk of the pyrroline beta-CH(2) group relative to the pyrrole beta-CH group. Variations in flexibility and electronic environments at meso carbons in the hydroporphyrins may also contribute. Rotation barriers for meta-disubstituted aryl groups, which are higher than those for para-substituted aryl groups, increase with the size and mass of the substituent.

Halogenated Carboxonium Salts: Preparation and Structural Analysis.

We have studied the preparation and isolation of the halogenated alkylidene oxonium salts CH(3)OCHX(+)MF(6)(-) (X = Cl, F; M = As, Sb). Addition of dichloromethylmethylether at -78 degrees C to the superacidic media HF/MF(5) resulted in the formation of the chlorine compounds CH(3)OCHCl(+)MF(6)(-), whereas at -65 degrees C the fluorinated salts CH(3)OCHF(+)MF(6)(-) are formed by a chlorine/fluorine exchange. The salts are characterized by their low-temperature IR and Raman spectra. Additionally, the crystal structures of the hexafluoroantimonates are presented. The structures of the cations turned out to be different in some points. The salt CH(3)OCHF(+)SbF(6)(-) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with 4 molecules in the unit cell and a = 9.942(2), b = 7.454(2), and c = 10.297(3) Å; beta = 111.27(2) degrees. The salt CH(3)OCHCl(+)SbF(6)(-) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with 4 formula in the unit cell and a = 5.970(3), b = 12.019(5), and c = 10.994(5) Å; beta = 92.59(3) degrees.

Optical efficiencies of lightning in planetary atmospheres.

Spacecraft observations show that the presence of lightning activity is not confined to the terrestrial atmosphere, but is also found in the atmospheres of Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Lightning activity may also occur in Titan's thick atmosphere. Calculations show that lightning produces a significant fraction of the nitric oxide that reacts with the ozone and chlorine compounds in the terrestrial stratosphere. In the atmosphere of the primordial Earth, lightning could have been the major source of many of the molecules required for the formation of life. To determine the effects of lightning activity in the atmospheres of other planets from spacecraft images requires a knowledge of the optical properties of the lightning discharge. Here we report the first simulations of lightning in planetary atmospheres by laser-induced plasmas. These simulations show that the fraction of the energy in lightning discharge channels that is radiated in the visible spectrum is similar for Earth, Venus and Titan, but quite different for Jupiter. One implication of our results is that the amount of trace gases produced by lightning in the jovian atmosphere must be larger than previously estimated.

Characterization of dioxin exposure in residents of Chapaevsk, Russia.

Since 1967, a chemical plant in the town of Chapaevsk (Samara province, Russia) has produced large amounts of chlorinated compounds and is suspected to be a major source of local environmental dioxin contamination. Dioxins have been detected in the local air, soil, drinking water, vegetables, and cow's milk. Human exposure to dioxins is suspected as a factor in the deteriorating local public health. In an effort to characterize nonoccupational dioxin exposure among local residents, during the summer of 1998, 24 volunteers were recruited to donate blood and to provide information about their residence, employment, demographics, medical history, and dietary habits. Selected polychlorinated dibenzodioxins, dibenzofurans, and coplanar biphenyls were measured in blood serum samples. The mean concentration of total dioxin World Health Organization toxic equivalents (WHO-TEQ(98)) based on polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was 61.2 (range 16.4-168.1) pg/g lipid. Subjects living in close proximity to the plant (less than 5 km) had significantly higher dioxin levels (mean WHO-TEQ(98), 75.7 pg/g lipid), as compared to subjects living more than 5 km from the plant (mean WHO-TEQ(98), 44.1 pg/g lipid) (P<0.04). Comparisons of the study results with available published data indicate that average blood dioxin levels were substantially higher in Chapaevsk residents than in nonoccupationally exposed populations of other parts of Russia, Europe, and North America. Chronic exposures of such magnitude may have appreciable adverse effects on public health.

The influence of chlorine on the intensity of metal atomic lines emitted by an electrolyte cathode atmospheric glow discharge.

The effect of different matrix anions in the solution on the intensity of metal atomic lines was investigated. A significant increase in intensity was found for chloride anions compared with nitrate and sulfate anions. This effect was even greater when the appropriate acids were applied. A further enhancement of the metal line intensities could be observed when HCl was used in the solution phase and simultaneously elemental chlorine was mixed with atmospheric air at levels up to 6-10 vol.%. This double effect was especially high for the Cu, Ni and Pb resonant atomic lines at higher chlorine-to-air ratios in the gas phase, and the W-anode tip was destroyed by chemical burning. The application of volatile organic chlorine compounds (carbon tetrachloride and chloroform) in the gas phase, even without any acidification, also caused an enhancement of the metal line intensities. The experimental results can be attributed to the different rates of the ion-ion (positive metal ion-negative chloride ion) and the positive metal ion-electron recombination processes taking place in the cathode dark space of the discharge plasma, yielding neutral metal atoms for excitation. This study is important for the on-line measurement of heavy metals in liquids.

The distribution of octachlorostyrene (OCS) in environmental samples from Europe.

Although octachlorostyrene (OCS) was never used as a commercial product, it may be produced during incineration and combustion processes involving chlorinated compounds. Its environmental spreading was evaluated through the analysis of several representative samples. OCS could not be measured in soil samples collected from urban and rural areas or sediments, but was present (up to 5.41 ng/g dry weight) in industrial soil collected near chemically polluted areas. For aquatic biota samples, the OCS concentrations in freshwater mussels ranged from <0.01 ng/g wet weight (ww) to 0.18 ng/g ww (mean 0.06 ng/g ww) and similar levels could be measured in 11 freshwater fish species from Belgium and Romania. A higher OCS contamination level was found in shrimps (mean 0.08 ng/g ww) compared to marine fish (mean 0.02 ng/g ww for bib and 0.01 ng/g ww for sole and whiting, respectively). OCS could also be measured in 19 harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) liver samples with a mean value of 1.90 ng/g ww. According to these data, it could be computed that the biomagnification factor for OCS was one order of magnitude lower than that of HCB in the fish-porpoise food chain. The mean OCS concentrations in blue tits (Parus caeruleus) eggs and great tits (Parus major) adipose tissue were 1.24 ng/g ww and 3.24 ng/g ww, respectively. OCS could be measured in different tissues of hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), with the highest concentrations found in adipose tissue (mean 0.34 ng/g ww) and liver (mean 0.39 ng/g ww). In contrast, only low concentrations of OCS could be measured in human adipose tissue (up to 0.38 ng/g ww) and liver (up to 0.05 ng/g ww), while it could not be detected in human brain or lung. The relationship between the concentrations of OCS and HCB was also discussed for each species.

Determination of VOCs in yellow eel from various inland water bodies in Flanders (Belgium).

Twenty freshwater eels caught in Flanders (Belgium) were analysed by GC-MS for a total of 52 VOCs. The most prominent VOCs are the BTEX and a number of chlorinated compounds such as chloroform and tetrachloroethene. The observed concentrations which, typically, were in the low ng/g wet weight range, could be linked to the major emission sources and the present study gives new evidence that combustion of fossil fuels is a major source of BTEX in the environment. The concentration levels in eels seem to be a reflection of the actual concentrations in their environment. For eels from the same location similar patterns and concentrations were observed, and the concentrations agree with what can be expected from those of the water column. Generally speaking, the observed concentrations do not seem to pose a threat for organisms. More definite statements will, however, require a larger dataset. The study suggests that the yellow eel can possibly be used as a biomonitor or sentinel organism for VOCs.

Lack of antifertility properties of novel halogenated glycolytic inhibitors and the urinary excretion and metabolism of 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-D-fructofuranose in the male rat.

The antifertility action of (R,S)-alpha-chlorohydrin administered orally to male rats was compared with that of several novel chlorinated compounds known to inhibit glycolysis and the kinematics of rat sperm in vitro. Oral gavage of 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-D-fructofuranose (dichlorodideoxyfructose, DCF), 1-chloro-3-hydroxypropanone, its dimethylketal and bromopyruvate did not reduce the fertility of male rats below that of controls at the equivalent antifertility dose of (R,S)-alpha-chlorohydrin (5 mg/kg/day) or higher. As anticipated for a compound cleaved to products of (S)-chirality even high doses of DCF (200 mg/kg) showed no effect on renal function. 36Cl-Labelled DCF administered orally to male rats was eliminated only slowly in the urine (16% of the ingested dose excreted in 96 h). In the first 8 h, approximately 50% of DCF was excreted unchanged, 30% was excreted as 3-chlorolactate (BCLA), the oxidation product 3-chlorolactaldehyde and 25% as Cl-. By 24 h little DCF remained and the major metabolite (70%) was BCLA and 20% Cl-. The high rate of dechlorination is most likely responsible for the low antifertility action of DCF.

Analysis and comparison of the microbial community structures of two enrichment cultures capable of reductively dechlorinating TCE and cis-DCE.

In order to study the effect of different chloroethenes (electron acceptors) on the bacterial composition of dechlorinating communities, two reductive dechlorinating enrichment cultures were developed that were able to reduce trichloroethene (TCE) and cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) to ethene using hydrogen as electron donor, respectively. The inoculum for the cultures was material from a methanogenic fluidized bed reactor (FBR), which was originally seeded with digester sludge and showed a stable capacity for tetrachloroethene (PCE) reduction to ethene for over six years. Molecular methods were used to determine and compare the microbial communities of these two enrichment cultures. A clone library of bacterial 16S rRNA genes was generated for each enrichment. The clones were screened into different groups by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis using two different four base pair recognition restriction enzymes. A total of 12 sequence types were identified by phylogenetic analysis of nearly complete 16S rDNA sequences ( approximately 1450 bp). The sequences were affiliated with six recognized phyla of the domain Bacteria: Firmicutes (low G+C Gram-positives), Chloroflexi (green non-sulphur bacteria), Actinobacteria (high G+C Gram-positives), Bacteroidetes (Cytophaga-Flexibacter-Bacteroides), Nitrospira and Spirochaetes. The results led to the identification of an organism closely related to Dehalococcoides ethenogenes to be the presumptive dechlorinator in both enrichments. Different electron acceptors affected the bacterial diversity and the community profiles of the two enrichments. Most of the sequences identified in our dechlorinating enrichments shared high similarities with sequences previously obtained from other enriched dechlorinating cultures and chlorinated-compound-contaminated sediments or aquifers, suggesting these bacteria may have direct or indirect roles in reductive dechlorination.

Oxidative stress in hemodialysis patients: is NADPH oxidase complex the culprit?

Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between oxidant production, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), chlorinated compounds, and antioxidant defense mechanisms. Most reports prove that oxidative stress is present in ESRD patients. Several studies tend to accreditate the hypothesis by which oxidative stress is a strong co-factor for the development of complications related to long-term HD such as atherosclerosis, amyloidosis, malnutrition, anemia, and infection. In order to evaluate the rationale for curative action against oxidative damage in chronic renal failure patients, we reviewed the putative factors involved in this process. Antioxidant systems are severely impaired in uremic patients and gradually altered with the degree of renal failure. Moreover, the inflammatory state caused by the hemoincompatibility of the dialysis system plays a critical role in the activation of NADPH oxidase, aggravating the pro-oxidant status of uremic patients. Prevention of ROS overproduction by improvement of dialysis biocompatibility, an important component of adequate dialysis, might be completed by antioxidant supplementation.

Characterization of a novel acid phosphatase from embryonic axes of kidney bean exhibiting vanadate-dependent chloroperoxidase activity.

A novel colorless acid phosphatase (KeACP), which was distinct from the kidney bean purple acid phosphatase, was purified to apparent homogeneity and cloned from embryonic axes of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. Ohfuku) during germination. When orthovanadate (VO(4)(-3)) is added to the apo form of the enzyme, KeACP uniquely exhibits the chloroperoxidase activity with loss of phosphatase activity. This is the first demonstration that KeACP is a vanadate-dependent chloroperoxidase in plants to be characterized and suggests that KeACP may play a role in modifying a wide variety of chlorinated compounds that are present in higher plants. The enzyme is a dimer that presents three forms made up of the combination of the dominant 56-kDa and the minor 45-kDa subunits, and both subunits contain carbohydrate. The full-length cDNA of the KeACP gene is 1641 nucleotides, and this sequence is predicted to encode a protein having 457 amino acid residues (52,865 Da), including a signal peptide. The complete nucleotide sequence of the genomic DNA (3228 bp) of KeACP consists of seven exons and six introns. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that the KeACP gene was expressed specifically in embryonic axes of the kidney bean, and its expression coincided with elongation of the embryonic axis during germination.

Effect of enterohepatic circulation on the pharmacokinetics of chloral hydrate and its metabolites in F344 rats.

Chloral hydrate (CH) is a commonly found disinfection by-product in water purification, a metabolite of trichloroethylene, and a sedative/hypnotic drug. CH and two of its reported metabolites, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and dichloroacetic acid (DCA), are hepatocarcinogenic in mice. Another metabolite of CH, trichloroethanol (TCE), is also metabolized into TCA, and the enterohepatic circulation (EHC) of TCE maintains a pool of metabolite for the eventual production of TCA. To gain insight on the effects of EHC on the kinetics of CH and on the formation of TCA and DCA, dual cannulated F344 rats were infused with 12, 48, or 192 mg/kg of CH and the blood, bile, urine, and feces were collected over a 48-h period. CH was cleared rapidly (>3000 ml/h/kg) and displayed biphasic elimination kinetics, with the first phase being elimination of the dose and the second phase exhibiting formation rate-limited kinetics relative to its TCE metabolite. The effects of EHC on metabolite kinetics were only significant at the highest dose, resulting in a 44% and 17% decrease in the area under the curve (AUC) of TCA and TCE, respectively. The renal clearance of CH, free TCE (f-TCE), and TCA of 2, 2.7, and 38 ml/h/kg, respectively, indicates an efficient reabsorption mechanism for all of these small chlorinated compounds. DCA was detected at only trace levels (<2 microM) as a metabolite of CH, TCA, or TCE.

Global intercomparison for the determination of chlorinated pesticides, PCBs and petroleum hydrocarbons in sediment sample IAEA-417.

A world-wide interlaboratory comparison exercise was organised using a lagoon sediment as sample material (IAEA-417) for the analyses of chlorinated pesticides, PCB congeners and petroleum hydrocarbons. The sample material was analysed by 97 laboratories from 46 countries, representing a rather wide distribution for such an interlaboratory comparison exercise. Whereas quite variable results were reported for most chlorinated pesticides, more consistent interlaboratory results were obtained for PCB congeners and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Nevertheless, many laboratories reported results in sufficiently dose agreement that after statistical screening of the data, consensus values were obtained for the concentration of several analytes in this sediment sample. The results allow reference concentration values to be assigned for several analytes. Thus, the sediment sample IAEA-417 can be used as a reference material for quality control of data in the determination of chlorinated compounds and petroleum hydrocarbons in moderately polluted sediments.

Pilot testing of dissolved air flotation (DAF) in a highly effective coagulation-flocculation integrated (FRD) system.

Factors of pretreatment coagulation/flocculation units were studied using raw water of low temperature and low turbidity. Aluminum sulfate (AS) and selected polyaluminium chlorides (PACls) were all effective in the DAF process when used under favorable conditions of coagulant addition, coagulation, flocculation and flotation units. Compared with the AS coagulant, PACls, at lower dosage, could give the same effective performance even with shorter coagulation/flocculation time or lower recycle ratio during the treatment of cold water. This is attributed to the higher-charged polymeric Al species, and the lower hydrophilic and more compact flocculated flocs of PACl coagulant. Based on results of pilot experiments, the goal of FRD system can be achieved by combining a DAF heterocoagulation reactor with PACl coagulant (F), an efficient flocculation reactor (R), as well as an economical auto-dosing system (D).

Bioaccumulation kinetics and bioconcentration factor of chlorinated pesticides in tissues of Puntius ticto (Ham.).

Bioaccumulation kinetics and bioconcentration factor (BCF) of chlorinated pesticides like Aldrin, Dieldrin, Benzene hexachloride (BHC), and Dichlorodiphenyl-dichloro-ethane (DDT) in fish tissues of Puntius ticto was studied in detail in a continuous fed system. The bioconcentration process is summarized by using a first order uptake model and the steady-state BCF is calculated based on the 30 days exposure. Rate of bioaccumulation of DDT was maximum of 4.6432 microg g(-1) wet weight per day in liver tissue whereas it was minimum of 0.0002 microg g(-1) wet weight per day in case of Dieldrin in the muscle tissue among the pesticides. It was observed that DDT showed maximum BCF of 89.010 in case of liver tissue of the fish exposed to 30 days. The regression coefficient (r2) between pesticide concentration and exposure time varied between 0.6212 and 0.9817 indicating high correlation. Based on actual calculated BCF values, the octanol water partition coefficient (Kow) values were predicted. In order to prove the hydrophobic property of chlorinated compounds and its affinity towards lipid, the Kow is predicted. Results showed that pesticide burden differ from tissue to tissue and can be correlated to the lipid content, size, exposure time, and species.
