Distribution of glands in the mucosa of the hard palate and its relation to carcinoma.

Carcinoma of the hard palate in women who practice reverse smoking is very common in Visakhapatnam. This carcinoma usually occurs in the middle of the posterior half of the hard palate and not in the soft palate or in the anterior half of hard palate. The volume of the glandular tissue in the mucosa of the hard palate is maximum to the right or left half of the midline in the posterior half in both fetuses and adults. The localization of the carcinoma of the hard palate in reverse smokers corresponds to the glandular area of the mucosa of the hard palate.

Intraoral papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum.

The literature related to intraoral papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum is critically reviewed and the reported cases analyzed to determine the average age, sex, and race of patients, and the site distribution of this curious lesion. Two new cases are reported. The histogenesis and differential diagnosis from cystadenocarcinoma are briefly discussed.

A simplified technique for construction of an interim obturator for a bilateral total maxillectomy defect.

PURPOSE: This report describes a simplified method for construction of an interim obturator for a huge maxillary defect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A medical grade-silicone obturator was fabricated indirectly on a duplicate cast of the surgical defect for a patient with a bilateral total maxillectomy. This silicone obturator was attached to an acrylic plate by means of mushroom-like extension tags projecting from the fitting surface of the acrylic palatal plate. RESULTS: The obturator was well retained in the patient's mouth and markedly improved his ability to speak and swallow. CONCLUSION: This technique proved to be a simple, quick, and cost-effective method for construction of obturators for huge maxillary defects.

[Reconstruction of the palate vault by free forearm cutaneous flap in oncology].

Surgical reconstruction after partial superior maxillectomy raises a major functional challenge and postoperative recovery implies difficult prosthetic rehabilitation. Between 1989 and 2000, 23 free radial forearm flap reconstruction were performed for palate defects. Twenty-two patients were treated for cancer-related defects and one patient for a non-malignant tumor. Immediate reconstruction was performed in 21 cases and delayed reconstruction in 2. Radiation therapy had been given prior to surgery in 7 patients, Flap necrosis occurred in 2 patients who had surgery alone. Deglutition and phonation outcome was satisfactory in all patients. Trismus was the most frequent complication (7 cases). The free radial forearm flap is the gold standard surgical treatment for superior maxillary defects. In these patients, and exclusive skin flap enables complete reconstruction.

Palatal lymphangioma: a case report.

Lymphangioma is a rare, congenital benign tumor involving vascular malformation, with a great potential for recurrence. It appears during the early years of life and therefore is highly common among children. We report here a five-year-old patient with a simple lymphngioma. The mother of the child reported she had noted the lesion in the palate after an injury in the area with a pen. The recommended treatment was surgical excision since this was a small and well-delimited lesion. Periodic clinical controls for 18 months showed that mucosa presented normal characteristics, with no signs of recurrence.

An alternative method for fabricating a closed hollow obturator: a clinical report.

This article describes a procedure in which the fabrication of a closed hollow obturator can be made with three sections of a denture flask by using silicone. Ease of fabrication while controlling the thickness of the hollow portion and eliminating leakage and discoloration are major advantages of this technique while minimizing laboratory and clinical appointment time.

The giant cell fibroma: a review of 116 cases.

A survey of 4342 oral pathology reports accumulated over a five-year period was performed. Diagnoses were 1090 irritation fibromas and 116 giant cell fibromas. A statistical comparison was then made between the giant cell fibromas and the irritation fibromas to determine if there were any differences between these two lesions with respect to sex or race predilection, age distribution, or location in the oral cavity. Finally, various staining techniques were performed on the giant cell fibromas in an attempt to ascertain the origin of the giant cells present in these lesions. The results will be discussed in this paper.
