We have previously described the isolation of the new bacterial species, Ralstonia/Burkholderia sp. strain DSM 6920, which grows with 6-methylnicotinate and regioselectively hydroxylates this substrate in the C2 position by the action of 6-methylnicotinate-2-oxidoreductase to yield 2-hydroxy-6-methylnicotinate (Tinschert et al. 1997). In the present study we show that this enzymatic activity can be used for the preparation of a series of hydroxylated heterocyclic carboxylic acid derivatives. The following products were obtained from the unhydroxylated educts by biotransformation using resting cells: 2-hydroxynicotinic acid, 2-hydroxy-6-methylnicotinic acid, 2-hydroxy-6-chloronicotinic acid, 2-hydroxy-5,6-dichloronicotinic acid, 3-hydroxypyrazine-2-carboxylic acid, 3-hydroxy-5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxylic acid and 3-hydroxy-5-chloropyrazine-2-carboxylic acid. Thus the respective educts were all regioselectively mono-hydroxylated at the carbon atom between the ring-nitrogen and the ring-carbon atom carrying the carboxyl group. In contrast to its relatively broad biotransformation abilities, the strain shows a limited heterocyclic nutritional spectrum. It could grow only with three of the seven transformed educts: 6-methylnicotinate, 2-hydroxy-6-methylnicotinate and 5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxylate. 2-Hydroxynicotinate, 2-hydroxy-6-chloronicotinate, 2-hydroxy-5,6-dichloronicotinate, 3-hydroxypyrazine-2-carboxylate and 3-hydroxy-5-chloropyrazine-2-carboxylate were not degraded by the strain. Therefore, unlike 6-methylnicotinate-2-oxidoreductase, which has a broad substrate spectrum, the second enzyme of the 6-methylnicotinate pathway seems to have a much more limited substrate range. Among 28 aromatic heterocyclic compounds tested as the sole source of carbon and energy, only pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylate was found as a further growth substrate, and this was degraded by a pathway which did not involve 6-methylnicotinate-2-oxidoreductase. To the best of our knowledge the microbial production of 2-hydroxy-6-chloronicotinic acid, 2-hydroxy-5,6-dichloronicotinic acid and 3-hydroxy-5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxylic acid have not been reported before. Strain DSM 6920 is so far the only known strain which allows the microbial production of both these compounds and 3-hydroxypyrazine-2-carboxylic acid and 3-hydroxy-5-chloroypyrazine-2-carboxylic acid.
The presence of an olfactory protein, specific for 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine, identified in cow olfactory mucosa, has been investigated in several species of all classes of vertebrates. The methods involved measurement of specific binding with the radioactive ligand and some competitors, as well as SDS electrophoresis on the crude homogenate. The results show that such protein is present only in some families of mammals, with no clear relationship to systematic position or to natural diet. The data suggest the use of more suitable species for in vivo and in vitro studies on the function of this protein.

Two three-dimensional (3D) malonate bridged networks, [Cu(mal)(DMF)](n) (1) and [[Cu(mal)(0.5pyz)].H(2)O](n) (2), have been synthesized in H(2)O-DMF solution. Compound 1 exhibits ferromagnetic ordering below 2.6 K (T(c)), and 2 displays a metamagnetic behavior below 3.2 K (T(N)).
Three coordination polymers of Co(II) with dicyanamide (dca) were obtained by adding coligands of 2,5-dimethylpyrazine-dioxide (2,5-dmpdo), 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine-dioxide (2,3,5-tmpdo), or 2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine-dioxide (2,3,5,6-tmpdo) to the binary system of Co-dca. Co2(dca)(4)(2,5-dmpdo)2 (1) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P with a=7.4962(2), b=9.0364(2), c = 10.4783(4) A, alpha = 72.567(1), beta = 72.557(1), gamma = 68.814(2) degrees , V = 616.61(3) A(3), Z = 1, and R1 = 0.0345. [Co3(dca)6(H2O)4].2(2,3,5-tmpdo) (2) is in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 29.477(1), b = 7.3735(2), c = 17.4631(7) A, beta = 93.652(1) degrees , V = 3787.9(2) A(3), Z = 4, and R1 = 0.0532. [Co(dca)2(H2O)2].2(2,3,5,6-tmpdo) (3) is in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with a = 9.4739(3), b = 11.3876(3), c = 12.1778(3) A, beta = 98.967(1) degrees , V = 1297.74(6) A(3), Z = 4, and R1 = 0.0481. 1 contains an unusual (4,4) Co-dca layer, representing a rare example of metal-dca coordination polymers with mixing 1,3-mu(2)- and 1,5-mu2-dca bridges. The Co-dca (4, 4) layers are connected by 2,5-dmpdo to give an alpha-Po-type network, which displays antiferromagnetic ordering below 10.8 K. 2 is a unique 3D framework composed of 2D twinned 1,5-mu2-dca bridged layers, which are connected by Co-H2O-Co linkages. The noncoordinated 2,3,5-tmpdo units and the coordination water molecules form hydrogen-bonded chains that thread the framework. 3 has alternating stacks of usual Co-dca (4, 4) layers through 1,5-mu2-dca bridges and organic layers of noncoordinated 2,3,5,6-tmpdo. Weak antiferromagnetic and weak ferromagnetic coupling was observed in 2 and 3, respectively.
The mixed-anion coordination polymer Cu(HCO2)(NO3)(pyz) was synthesized, its crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction, and its magnetic structure was characterized by ac susceptibility, dc magnetization, muon-spin relaxation, and spin dimer analysis. The crystal structure consists of five-coordinate Cu2+ ions that are connected through syn-anti bridging mu-HCO2- and mu-pyz ligands to form a highly corrugated two-dimensional layered network. Bulk magnetic measurements show a broad maximum in chi(T) at 6.6 K. The HCO2- and pyz ligands mediate ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin exchange interactions between adjacent Cu2+ ions with the spin exchange parameters J/kB = 8.17 and -5.4 K, respectively (H = -JSigmaSi x Sj). The muon-spin relaxation data show a transition to a long-range magnetic ordering below TN = 3.66(3) K. For T < TN, the M(H) and chi'ac measurements provide evidence for a field-induced spin-flop transition at 15.2 kOe. That Cu(HCO2)(NO3)(pyz) undergoes a long-range magnetic ordering is an unexpected result because the one-dimensional Cu(NO3)2(pyz) and three-dimensional Cu(HCO2)2(pyz) compounds display linear chain antiferromagnetism with no long-range magnetic ordering down to 2 K.
Three binuclear Ru complexes cis-,cis-[(NH3)4(L)Ru-pz-Ru(NH3)4(dmso)](PF6)4 (L = NH3 (4), pyridine (5), benzonitrile (6); dmso = dimethyl sulfoxide) have been prepared, and their electrochemical behavior, exhibiting molecular hysteresis, is reported. Simulations of cyclic voltammograms and thin-layer cyclic voltammograms have provided redox potentials, isomerization rates, and interconversion rates of the complexes. The rates of the conversions between two isomeric intermediate states have been determined to be5 x 10(-6) and 4 x 10(-4) s(-1) for the complex 4, 4 x 10(-5) and 4 x 10(-4) s(-1) for the complex 5, and 2 x 10(-4) and 5 x 10(-5) s(-1) for the complex 6. The equilibrium parameters between these states are discussed in relation to the redox potentials of the complexes.
The binuclear complex [RuII(NH3)5(pz)RuII(bpy)2(NO)](PF6)5 was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, UV-vis, and IR spectroscopy. The complex UV-vis spectrum has presented bands at 242, 286, and 530 nm in acetate buffer solution at pH 4.5. The photochemical study by laser flash-photolysis at 532 nm showed the NO release account from the NO measured by a NO sensor. The quantum yield for NO release (0.025 +/- 0.004 mol einsten-1) was determined with a laser flash-photolysis apparatus (Continuum Q-switched Nd:YAG laser). The major irradiation product of the [RuII(NH3)5(pz)RuII(bpy)2(NO)]5+ complex besides nitric oxide is [RuIII(NH3)5(pz)RuII(bpy)2(H2O)]5+.
Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4) deactivates glucose-regulating hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP, thus, DPP4 inhibition has become a useful therapy for type 2 diabetes. Optimization of the high-throughput screening lead 6 led to the discovery of 25 (ABT-341), a highly potent, selective, and orally bioavailable DPP4 inhibitor. When dosed orally, 25 dose-dependently reduced glucose excursion in ZDF rats. Amide 25 is safe in a battery of in vitro and in vivo tests and may represent a new therapeutic agent for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
A transition metal carbonyl species, Cr(CO)(4)dpp, has been successfully attached to bare silver nanoparticles prepared by laser ablation of a metal foil in ethanol. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images have shown that at least a portion of the silver nanoparticles have been capped by the chromium species, and ligand shells corresponding to Cr(CO)(4)dpp multilayer adsorption onto the silver nanoparticles of 30-50 nm diameter have been observed. The detection of the strongest Raman-active nu(CO) band of Cr(CO)(4)dpp at 2004 cm(-1) revealed that the species has been adsorbed without decomposition. The time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) signals recorded of the chromium-capped silver nanoparticles were also consistent with the nondecomposition adsorption process. Density functional calculations have been used to reproduce the Raman spectrum using Ag(7)(+) as a model surface. A large binding energy of about 122 kJ/mol has also been computed between silver and nitrogen atoms thus lending support to Cr(CO)(4)dpp being chemisorbed onto the silver surface.
The hydrothermal reaction of MoO3, Cu(C2H3O2)2.H2O, tpypyz, H3PO4 and H2O yields a 2D material, [(Cu2(tpypyz)(H2O)2)(Mo5O15)(HOPO3)2].2H2O (1.2H2O), constructed from (Mo5O15(HOPO3)2)4- clusters linked through (Cu2(tpypyz)(H2O)2)2+ components; in contrast, use of Cu2O in the synthesis in place of Cu(C2H3O2)2.H2O yields a 3D material [(Cu2(tpypyz)(H2O)2)(Mo5O15)(HOPO3)2].3H2O (2.3H2O), constructed from the same building blocks as 1.2H2O.
