This paper explores the perceptions of staff and students regarding the supporting sciences within nursing education and how they feel such content relates to the 'real world' of nursing. A qualitative study examining the perceptions of students and teaching staff, particularly the concept of relevance, was conducted to explore factors which impact upon the integration of theory and practice. The teaching approaches used, assessment items selected, and the perceptions held about what nurses actually do all impinge upon what, and how, students learn in subjects which are essentially non-nursing in their orientation. Through an awareness of factors affecting how students and teaching staff actually approach supporting sciences content, better informed curriculum decisions can be made.

We explore the current and, it would appear, the increasing opposition by some nurse academics to the notion that the traditional scientific methods are suitable for deriving knowledge of essentially social constructions and events. We caution against pursuing an anti-quantitative rhetoric and argue that a rapprochement is possible between contrasting methodologies. To argue for one methodology to the exclusion of all others is both naive and simplistic. All research traditions can be criticized for failing to do justice to social phenomena; it is therefore incumbent upon nurse researchers to be aware of the relative merits of each approach. An example is provided on how different research methodologies can be profitably combined.
A model of interdependent decision making has been developed to understand group differences in socioeconomic behavior such as nonmarital fertility, school attendance, and drug use. The statistical mechanical structure of the model illustrates how the physical sciences contain useful tools for the study of socioeconomic phenomena.

This paper argues that two characteristics of social life impinge importantly upon medical attempts to maintain high ethical standards. The first is the tension between the role of ethics in protecting the patient and maintaining the solidarity of the profession. The second derives from the observation that the foundations of contemporary medical ethics were laid at a time of one-to-one doctor-patient relations while nowadays most doctors work in or are associated with large-scale organisations. Records cease to be the property of individual doctors, become available not only to other doctors but also to educational and social work personnel. Making records openly available to patients is suggested as the only antidote to this irreversible loss of individual practitioner control. The importance for doctors of understanding the nature of professional and bureaucratic organisations in order to deal with the hazards involved is stressed as is the responsibility of the General Medical Council to regulate medical competence as well as personal behaviour.
