Vitamin D is required for the normal development of teeth and bones. When there is excess vitamin D, systemic and dental changes may occur. This is a case report of a girl who experienced hypercalcemia secondary to excess vitamin D derived from the consumption of milk that was incorrectly fortified. The changes in the permanent dentition to date are enamel hypoplasia and focal pulp calcification. These changes correspond to the timing of the toxemia caused by hypervitaminosis D.

Cementum crystals and matrix vesicles on the root surface of partially formed teeth in dogs were examined with a transmission electron microscope. Fine filamentous crystals were observed in the cementum calcifying fronts. The running pattern was mainly parallel to the root surface in the apical region and perpendicular to the root surface in lateral and coronal regions. Matrix vesicles were observed at the apical half of the periodontium, but not observed at the coronal region. These findings suggest that the parallel-arranged cementum would become the light-microscopic lamellar type and the perpendicular one the light-microscopic dense-line structure when fully developed. Moreover, cementum formation occurs due to two kinds of mechanisms: participation of matrix vesicles and secondary calcification (= additional cementogenesis).

Calcification in the first decidual molar tooth first appears at the 33-34th week of gestation; and the second at the 36-37th week. It is therefore a stable and precise index of gestational age. It can be estimated in over two-thirds of films of the intra-uterine contents chosen at random. The search for this sign can complement or take the place of looking for epiphyseal centres in the knee. It gives information about gestational age in pathological conditions where bony maturation is abnormal.
