As part of an ongoing evaluation of US Army immunization policies, two serologic surveys were conducted at an army basic training center. Antibody status to measles, mumps, and rubella were determined by an ELISA in 969 soldiers in 1989 and 992 soldiers in 1990. Measles seronegativity rates, directly adjusted to the 15- to 24-year-old US population in 1980, decreased from 21.3% in 1989 to 12.5% in 1990 (P < .001). Decreases also were observed in mumps (16.2% to 14.7%) and rubella seronegativity rates (18.4% to 14.3%) from 1989 to 1990 but were not statistically significant. In subgroup analyses, significant decreases in measles seronegativity were observed in younger, white, male, and female cohorts. There is evidence that susceptibility among young adults had declined, although it remains unclear if this is due to increased immunization or exposure to natural disease.
Neutrophil activity was elevated in the conditioned mice for the first time through an established conditioned training process. Catecholamines were proved to be important in the regulation of this conditioned innate immunity. In the study, the camphor odor (as the conditioned stimulus, CS) and poly I: C (as the unconditioned stimulus, US) was used to conditionally elevate the activity of the splenic neutrophils. The mechanism(s) responsible for the conditioned enhancement of neutrophil activity was further investigated using the neurochemical blocking assay and immunohistochemical analysis. Results showed that the neutrophil activity was significantly enhanced through the conditioned training process; both reserpine and 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) significantly blocked this conditioned innate immunity at the conditioned recall stage. Dexamethasone (Dex), however, showed no effect on the conditioned neutrophil response. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive cells significantly increased in the locus coeruleus (LC), hypothalamus, and cortex but not in the spleen of the conditioned animals. These results indicate that during the conditioned recall stage, the brain signals the splenic neutrophils via the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) by releasing the peripheral catecholamines in spleen. The activation of the SNS, on the other hand, is also under the influence of catecholamines released in the LC. The hypothalamic pituitary (HP) axis, on the other hand, plays no role in the regulation of the conditioned neutrophil response.
The in vitro proliferation response to lipopolysaccharide and pokeweek mitogen by splenic lymphocytes and the effect on the total splenic lymphocyte number were examined in C57BL/6J mice following an 8-week treadmill training program (30 m/min, 8 degrees slope, 30 min/day, 5 times/week) and after a single bout of exhaustive exercise (50% stepwise increases in final running speed for 10-min intervals). Plasma corticosterone levels were also measured to evaluate whether changes in adrenocortical activation were associated with exercise-induced immunomodulation. In comparison to sedentary controls, trained mice had an increase of 35% in succinate dehydrogenase activity per unit of protein in the quadriceps femoris muscle. Trained mice showed an increase in splenic lymphocyte proliferation to both mitogens which was evident 72 h after completion of the final training session, relative to sedentary controls. Immediately following exercise, however, lymphocyte proliferative responses were depressed compared with the training and the control values. The exercise regimen resulted in a reduction in total number of mononuclear cells per spleen. Changes in plasma corticosterone levels after exercise were not clearly associated with immunodepression or immunoenhancement of splenic lymphocyte mitogenesis. Taken together, the data suggest that moderate endurance training augments splenic B lymphocyte mitogenesis and further, that the immediate effects of exercise on splenic immune function vary with the duration and intensity of the work.
Exercise for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) has been shown to improve cardiovascular function, increase strength and endurance, and reduce fatigue. The impact of exercise on immune function in the disease, however, remains mostly unexplored. Ten female MS patients participated in an 8 week programme of twice-weekly progressive resistance training, with pre- and post-training assessment of serum concentrations of cytokines IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, CRP, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma. After training, IL-4, IL-10, CRP and IFN-gamma showed statistically reduced resting concentrations in blood, while TNF-alpha showed non-significant reductions and IL-2 and IL-6 remained unchanged. These results suggest that progressive resistance training may have an impact on cytokine concentrations in individuals with MS and should be confirmed in studies with stronger statistical power. The impact of these changes on overall immune function in MS and on disease status and prognosis remains to be determined.
This paper observed the clinic investigation.Which prove the relationship among the Chinese dialectical fur condition pulse condition, dialectical divided into types and survival time, immunity function before and after therapy, which will provide scientific basis and new train of thinking for recovery of stomatological carcinoma patient following operation. These patients according to dialectical type.were divided into type of feeble kidney and type of mixed excess and deficiency syndrome that the survive time compare with control group through treat by statistics, were P<0.05.The positive cases of immunity response of administration group were more increased than control group, the rate was 22.2%,maintenance and decrease rate were 7.5% and 14.6% compare with control group, with multiple factor computer analysis in two groups. There is some evidence that the traditional Chinese prescription of "ShengYang" treat in tumor patients with the type of feeble kidney and type of mixed excess an deficiency syndrome were remarkably regulate the immunity function and promote the action of anti tumor. For recovery therapy after tumor operation which reach a fairly action.
In this study, we assessed the effects of a 4 week basic military physical training programme for male recruits of the Hellenic Air Force on the number and distribution of circulating immune cells and adrenergic and adrenocortical hormonal responses. One group of recruits (exercised, n = 48) participated in moderate intermittent physical exercise, whereas a second group (non-exercised controls, n = 9) performed only light work in the barracks. Both groups participated in the same non-physical, classroom-type training and testing. Military training by the exercised group resulted in significant increases in CD4+ T-lymphocytes, renal cortisol excretion and the urinary noradrenaline/adrenaline ratio, together with reductions in neutrophils and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio. In the exercised group, the urinary noradrenaline/adrenaline ratio correlated positively with the training-induced changes in CD4+ T-lymphocytes and negatively with changes in the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio. No significant relationship was found between training-induced increases in cortisol excretion and any of the peripheral blood cell alterations. Our results indicate that 4 weeks of military training consisting of intermittent moderate exercise resulted in a significant increase in CD4+ T-lymphocytes and reduction in neutrophils. These changes were probably driven by alterations in hormonal status, including the significant impact of sympathetic nervous system activation.
Dietary glutamine supplementation and exercise have been reported independently to enhance immune function and reduce tumor growth. We study the effect of both of these interventions on the growth of the Morris Hepatoma 7777, implanted in 59 female Sprague-Dawley Buffalo rats. Rats were fed a nutritionally complete, purified diet with or without L-glutamine 20 g/kg diet and randomized to swim 3 h/d or to remain sedentary. After 14 d, the mean tumor weight of glutamine-supplemented rats was lower (P < 0.0001) than that of unsupplemented rats (5.8 +/- 0.4 vs. 8.7 +/- 0.5 g, respectively). Exercise did not alter tumor growth. Glutamine supplementation increased [3H] thymidine incorporation by splenocytes incubated with Concanavalin A and the proportion of natural killer cells in spleen, but not cytotoxic activity against YAC-1 cells. Glutamine supplementation did not alter glutamine concentrations in plasma (691 +/- 12 mumol/L) or soleus muscle (5328 +/- 102 pmol/mg) but resulted in higher (P < 0.004) plasma concentrations of leucine, isoleucine and valine, precursors of glutamine. Splenocytes from exercised rats had a higher (P < 0.001) mitogen response than those from sedentary rats. Isolated tumor cells demonstrated high rates of non-oxidative glucose and glutamine metabolism and consumption of glutamine, tryptophan and methionine. However, neither diet nor exercise significantly affected glucose or glutamine metabolism by tumor cells. The precise mechanism of tumor growth suppression by oral glutamine supplementation is not clear but may be related to changes in substrate availability, improved tumor-directed natural killer cytotoxic activity or a faster response to an immune challenge.
Rheumatoid arthritis arises from a reaction of the immune system to normal body components, sometimes triggered by bacterial or viral infection. The synovia of affected joints are infiltrated by CD4+, CD19-, and plasma cells. The synovial fluid shows a sterile inflammation, with high neutrophil counts and increased concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines (particularly IL-1, IL-8, TNF-alpha and JFN-gamma). The plasma shows increased CD4+ counts and a pro-inflammatory shift in T cell populations with high titers of rheumatoid factors. Traditional treatment has included rest of the affected part, which can cause a reduction of physical condition. However, exercise induces changes in circulating immune function (including a decrease of CD4+ count) that would appear helpful in regulating inflammation. Further, there is evidence that patients can tolerate a program of regular moderate aerobic exercise. Moreover, empirical data suggest that such a prescription substantially enhances physical performance, without exacerbating either clinical or immunological markers of the disease process.
Eight years after diagnosis, 40% of MS patients develop a chronically progressive form. Annually we treat approximately 200 patients with progressive MS. Treatment consists of medication, i.e. agents that help to prevent future impairment, or interferon-beta injections, and intervals of mitoxantrone infusions (Novantrone(R)), and in some cases cyclic cyclophosphamide (Endoxan(R)) or nucleoside analogue cladribin (Leustatin(R)). Without clear scientific evidence, we recommend unsaturated fatty acids (thistle or sunflower oil), sufficient protein, and freshly prepared fruits and vegetables as a sound basis for remyelination. Remyelination profits from general prophylaxis in the use of ascorbic acid to help prevent urinary infections via acidification, autogenic training to reduce fatigue, improve ventilation of deeper airways, and stimulate vagotonic regeneration, and prevention of unnecessary immune stimulation caused by insects and some food. We recommend the use of sun hats and disencourage blood donation (Allain 1998). Physiotherapy can improve strength, reduce spasticity, and train the patient to compensate for dysbalance and ataxia; supported by beta blockers and good antispastics, tremor and gait disturbances can be positively influenced. Music and motion, speech therapy, realistic training of daily activities, and prudent psychotherapy complete the range of measurements to reconstitute as much as possible of the patient's individual freedom. In the individual, we eventually provide prudent technical aids and careful prognostic estimations. Cooperating with local and regional patient networks, we reinforce long-term disease management and spread up-to-date medical research results, and finally gather valuable contextual information and clinical data on an increasingly frequent idiopathic disease of the human central nervous system.
Epidemiological studies clearly show a connection between physical activity and the occurrence of disabilities in old age. Physical exercise is possible and useful at every age. Numerous intervention trials have shown that training of endurance, strength and coordination has positive effects on the cardiovascular system, the lung, the musculo-skeletal system, metabolism and the immune system in elderly people. Even very frail elderly people can increase their muscle strength and functional capabilities by strength training. Group sessions may improve social interactions and additionally increase the quality of life.
The neuroendocrine system is regarded as the major link between the psychological state and the immune system in man. The present study was undertaken to examine the acute effect of ChunDoSunBup Qi-training, a traditional psychosomatic training, on the plasma level of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and insulin like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-3 in young men. To characterize the plasma level of hormones and the pattern of IGFBP-3 at pre- (-10 min), mid-time (40 min), and immediately after (post-time, +10 min) Qi-training, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and western ligand blot (WLB) analysis were used. The plasma level of GH at the mid-time was significantly increased (P<0.05) compared to the level at pre-time of Qi-training. The plasma level of IGF-I was also increased at mid-time (P<0.05) and immediately after Qi-training. There was a significant correlation between the levels of GH and IGF-I immediately after Qi-training (r=0.69, P<0.01). In this study, the change of IGFBP-3 among the several IGFBPs was determined. There was a relative shift in IGFBP-3 for the 43-kDa fraction during mid-time of Qi-training (P<0.05). These results suggest that Qi-training influences the growth hormone, IGF-I and IGFBP-3 status via brain-target organ axis in men.
Serotonin (5-HT) is a neurotransmitter and an immune modulator. At the periphery, the serotonergic system appears to possess a regulatory activity via 5-HT 1B receptors. The present study investigated the effects of a 5-day military course following 3 weeks of combat training on the functional activity of 5-HT 1B/1D receptors in peripheral blood lymphocytes of male soldiers. The results of [35S]GTPgammaS binding assays showed that h5-HT 1B/1D receptors were desensitized after the training program, although serum 5-HT was unchanged. These data suggest the existence of a control on T cells mediated through h5-HT 1B/1D receptors leading cytokine production modulation after a physical training.
The purpose of this study was to compare two brief, inexpensive distraction techniques for children receiving immunizations during a county-sponsored immunization clinic. Preschool children (n = 80) were assigned to a party blower intervention, a pinwheel intervention, or a control group. Nurses were instructed to use "standard instructions" for the control group, and to simply provide the distracter and encourage use, but not to spend time trying to train the child or force them to use it, for the other groups. Results of planned comparisons indicated significant party blower results in the children's ratings of reduced distress (P < .01) and the parents' ratings of having to hold their child less strongly (P = .04), and showed it to be more distracting than the pinwheel (P < .02). The overall pattern of results on all rating scales supports the efficacy of using a party blower for reducing children's immunization distress, with minimal staff training and no procedural delay.
We examined the effects of chronic exercise on fitness and immune status in Caucasian males (34.9 +/- 5.6 yr) diagnosed by Western blot as seropositive for the HIV-1 virus. The exercise regimen involved 12 wk of 1 h sessions 3 d.wk: 20 min of cycle exercise at 60-80% HRreserve was followed by 35 min of strength and flexibility training. After matching subjects on health status (modified Walter Reed criteria), subjects (N = 37) were randomly assigned to exercise or a counseling control condition. Changes in strength, responses to the YMCA cycle test, and serum lymphocytes were tested by MANOVA in a condition (exercise or counseling)-by-time (pretest, posttest) design with repeated measures on time. Results indicated significant (P less than 0.001) group-by-time interactions for strength (N.m) (chest press and leg extension) and for HR (beats.min-1) and total time (TT) on the cycle test at 150 W. Strength and TT increased and HR decreased in the exercise condition, while control subjects did not change. Total leukocyte, lymphocyte, CD4+, and CD8+ cell counts, and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio were statistically unchanged for each condition. We conclude that HIV-1+ men, including those symptomatic for AIDS-related complex, can experience significant increases in neuromuscular strength and cardiorespiratory fitness without changes in lymphocyte phenotypes or clinical diagnosis when the exercise regimen is prescribed and monitored in accordance with ACSM guidelines for healthy adults.
Public-private partnerships are integral to our public health paradigm. The Coalition Training Institute (1995-1998) trained 283 participants from 29 U.S. cities, 49 states, and 7 U.S. territories to foster and sustain partnerships that improve immunization rates. Evaluation consisted of on-site and follow-up surveys, effectiveness inventories, and focus groups. The Institute met participants' expectations. Four months later, participants reported training was applicable (93%) and helpful in overcoming organizational barriers. Most built or improved coalitions (81%), helped organizations apply new ideas (86%), and obtained training/support (60%). Participants requested more on-site and distance-learning opportunities to network, train coalition leaders and members, and learn new skills.
OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus often entails severe psychological distress. Reversely, tinnitus may be considered as a chronic stressor. Based on this hypothesis, we investigated whether improving stress-managing capabilities would influence psychological and stress-related immunological parameters in chronic tinnitus sufferers. METHODS: Tinnitus (TPs, n=26) and non-tinnitus participants (NTPs, n=13) took part in a standardised 10-week relaxation program. An additional group of tinnitus sufferers (n=18), randomly assigned to a waiting list, served as control (TC) subjects. Mood, perceived stress, global quality of life, and tinnitus disturbance were assessed before and after the intervention. The stress-sensitive immunological parameters TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-10 were measured before, during, and at the end of the intervention. RESULTS: The program resulted in a significantly decreased perception of stress, anxious depression, anger, and tinnitus disturbance, paralleled by a reduction of TNF-alpha. No alterations were noted for IL-6 or IL-10. For the NTPs and TCs, no relevant psychological or immune changes could be observed. CONCLUSION: The data suggest that (1) the training offered improved stress-managing capabilities in chronic tinnitus sufferers, and (2) TNF-alpha may be conceived as a stress marker.
In an attempt to identify appropriate antigens for birth control vaccines, the Task Force on Immunological Methods for Fertility Regulation under WHO's Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction carried out an investigation of naturally occurring immune responses to reproductive tract antigens which were consistently associated with infertility. Large volumes of sera from subjects satisfying the criteria for one of 16 different clinical categories (listed in Table 1) were collected and samples were subsequently assessed, under code, by investigators with experience in the detection of antibodies to antigens involved in the reproductive process. Sera from 329 persons were included in the study and 20 laboratories examined the sera for antibodies to sperm, zona pellucida, and trophoblast or trophoblast products. In addition, antibodies to certain microbial antigens and to various leucocyte and organ antigens were investigated. The results of these studies are presented in the following papers.
