Synthesis and photoluminescence study of molecularly imprinted polymers appended onto CdSe/ZnS core-shells.

The Photoluminescence of quantum dots have been found to be a useful tool for the detection of small to medium sized analyte molecules in a host-guest environment. By the incorporation of quantum dots into molecularly imprinted polymers, which can offer shape and selectivity, the former can respond by quenching the photoluminescence emission upon template binding. In this work host polymers were synthesized and cased into thin films using functional monomers such as methacrylic acid (MAA), CdSe/ZnS core-shell derivatized with 4-vinyl pyridine and ethylene glycol dimethacrylic acid (EGDMA) as a cross-linker. The intensity of photoluminescence emission is detected upon analyte binding.

Effect of metal chlorides on thermal degradation of (waste) polycarbonate.

In this study, we investigated how to treat (waste) polycarbonate efficiently to reduce its degraded residue. The study was carried out in an isothermal reactor under continuous nitrogen flow at atmospheric pressure to pyrolyze polycarbonate (PC) alone and in the presence of metal chloride. Some metal chlorides were shown to be catalytic active for the degradation of PC at 400 degrees C, which increased degradation conversion from 8.5% to more than 58.3%. Among those active metal chlorides, ZnCl2 and SnCl2 can produce higher liquid product yields. Effects such as particle size of PC, temperature, the weight ratio of metal chloride/PC, and degradation time on the degradation conversion of PC without and with these two most active metal chlorides were studied. Results of the liquid product analysis by GC/MS demonstrated the product composition of PC degradation over the metal chlorides is much simpler than that of degradation alone. The main liquid product is phenol, p-isopropylphenol, diphenyl carbonate, and bisphenol A for all cases.

Labeling and intracellular tracking of functionally active plasmid DNA with semiconductor quantum dots.

Semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) allow long-term imaging in the cellular environment with high photostability. QD biolabeling techniques have previously been developed for tagging proteins and peptides as well as oligonucleotides. In this contribution, QD-decorated plasmid DNA was utilized for the first time for long-term intracellular and intranuclear tracking studies. Conjugation of plasmid DNA with phospholipid-coated QDs was accomplished using a peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-N-succinimidyl-3-(2-pyridylthio) propionate linker. Gel electrophoresis and confocal and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to confirm the structure of QD-DNA conjugates. AFM imaging also revealed that multiple QDs were attached in a cluster at the PNA-reactive site of the plasmid DNA. These QD-DNA conjugates were capable of expressing the reporter protein, enhanced green fluorescent protein, following transfection in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO-K1) cells with an efficiency of ca. 62%, which was comparable to the control (unconjugated) plasmid DNA.

Theoretical studies on vibrational spectra of some halides of Group IIB elements.

The vibrational spectra of Group IIB elements halides MX2 and their dimers M2X4 (M=Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II); X=F, Cl, Br and I) have been systematically investigated by ab initio RHF and B3LYP methods with LanL2MB, LanL2DZ and SDD basis sets. The optimized geometries, calculated vibrational frequencies are evaluated via comparison with the experimental data. The vibrational frequencies, calculated by these methods with different basis sets, are compared to each other too. The best results can be obtained by RHF/SDD method, with this method, the deviations for MX2 and Hg2X4 are <7%. Some vibrational frequencies of M2X4 that have not been experimentally reported are also predicted.

Probing biocatalytic transformations with CdSe-ZnS QDs.

CdSe/ZnS QDs enable the optical probing of the biocatalytic oxidation of tyrosine derivatives and of the scission of peptides by thrombin. CdSe/ZnS QDs were modified with tyrosine methyl ester or with a tyrosine-containing peptide. The tyrosine units were reacted with tyrosinase/O2 to yield the respective l-DOPA and quinone derivatives. The luminescence of QDs modified by the enzyme-generated quinone units is quenched. The quinone-functionalized peptide associated with the QDs was cleaved by thrombin, a process that restored the luminescence of the QDs.

An exported rhodanese-like protein is induced during growth of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in metal sulfides and different sulfur compounds.

By proteomic analysis we found a 21-kDa protein (P21) from Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans ATCC 19859 whose synthesis was greatly increased by growth of the bacteria in pyrite, thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, CuS, and ZnS and was almost completely repressed by growth in ferrous iron. After we determined the N-terminal amino acid sequence of P21, we used the available preliminary genomic sequence of A. ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 to isolate the DNA region containing the p21 gene. The nucleotide sequence of this DNA fragment contained a putative open reading frame (ORF) coding for a 23-kDa protein. This difference in size was due to the presence of a putative signal peptide in the ORF coding for P21. When p21 was cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli, the signal peptide was removed, resulting in a mature protein with a molecular mass of 21 kDa and a calculated isoelectric point of 9.18. P21 exhibited 27% identity and 42% similarity to the Deinococcus radiodurans thiosulfate-sulfur transferase (rhodanese; EC 2.8.1.1) and similar values in relation to other rhodaneses, conserving structural domains and an active site with a cysteine, both characteristic of this family of proteins. However, the purified recombinant P21 protein did not show rhodanese activity. Unlike cytoplasmic rhodaneses, P21 was located in the periphery of A. ferrooxidans cells, as determined by immunocytochemical analysis, and was regulated depending on the oxidizable substrate. The genomic context around gene p21 contained other ORFs corresponding to proteins such as thioredoxins and sulfate-thiosulfate binding proteins, clearly suggesting the involvement of P21 in inorganic sulfur metabolism in A. ferrooxidans.

Photoluminescence decay dynamics and mechanism of energy transfer in undoped and Mn2+ doped ZnSe nanoparticles.

Energy transfer dynamics in Mn2+-doped ZnSe nanoparticles have been studied by monitoring the photoluminescence using time-integrated and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Upon Mn2+ doping, static photoluminescence (PL) spectra show that the bandedge excitonic state is quenched and the characteristic Mn2+ emission appears at 584 nm. Picosecond PL kinetics and femtosecond transient absorption studies have both found that the Mn2+ doping substantially shortens the average lifetimes of the bandedge excitonic state as well as shallow trap states. The energy transfer from ZnSe to Mn2+ likely follows two mechanisms, one mediated through trap states and another without.

Towards dilute magnetic semiconductors: Fe and Co substituted inorganic-organic hybrid materials based on ZnSe.

Inorganic-organic hybrid nanostructures doped with magnetic ions have been synthesized via substitution of Zn by Co or Fe in the ZnSe(L)0.5 systems under solvothermal conditions. These dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS), Zn(1-x)MxSe(L)0.5 (M = Co, Fe; L = ethylenediamine or en, 1,3-propanediamine or pda; 0 < x < 1), are composed of perfectly ordered Zn(1-x)MxSe semiconductor monolayers interconnected by organic diamine molecules. The large blue shifts in their optical absorption edges (approximately 1.1-1.5 eV) compared to the bulk ZnSe are a direct result of a very strong quantum confinement effect (QCE). Magnetic studies show that there exist antiferromagnetic interactions between the Co or Fe centers in the structures and the interaction is enhanced as the doping concentration increases. The introduction of Fe or Co to hybrid inorganic-organic semiconductors provides a promising route to generate materials that combine the advantageous features of inorganic, organic, and magnetic functionalities in a single structure.
