[Possibilities of ultrasound biometry in the differential diagnosis of early melanomas and nevi of the choroid].

The authors analyse the results of echobiometry carried out in 21 patients with choroid nevi and in 8 patients with primary melanomas of the choroid, administered no treatment for this or that reason. Nevi with a prominence of less than 1 mm were found to be the most incident, and their elevation did not increase over the course of the follow-up. Only in two patients with nevi these formations were found elevating, this corresponding with the manifestation of clinical signs of primary melanoma. The tumor progress was clearly seen in the patients with primary melanoma of the choroid, it was permanently elevating.

[Analysis of the serum concentration of pregnancy protein-1 (SP-1) offers no advantage in comparison with menstrual anamnesis and ultrasound biometry in determining gestational age].

In 69 patients with normal pregnancy the estimated day of confinement (EDC) was determined by three different methods (last menstrual period = LMP, ultrasound, and determination of Schwangerschaftsprotein-1 (SP-1) serum concentration). Ultrasound and LMP were shown to predict the EDC with approximately the same accuracy. While data obtained by LMP were scattered a little bit more around the mean value, data obtained by ultrasound tended to underestimate the EDC slightly. Determination of SP-1 serum concentration had the lowest predictive value in assessing the EDC. Accordingly, we don't consider routine SP-1 determinations to be a useful test in antenatal care.

Morphology, biometry and taxonomic position of two peritrich ciliate Protozoa found in activated sludge.

The morphology of two sessile peritrich species taken from a plant for the processing of activated sludge is described. One of these species, having a non-contractile, branched peduncle, belongs to the genus, Heteropolaria, and the other having a single, contractile stalk, is a member of the genus Vorticella. A statistical and biometric study is made of their morphological characteristics, and the taxonomic position of both ciliates is discussed.

[Automatic biometry and keratometry in comparison with the manual technic].

In order to determine the power of intraocular lenses more easily prior to cataract surgery, we compared the results obtained by automatic measurement of the corneal refractive power by the Humphrey Autokeratometer with manually obtained measurements using the Zeiss ophthalmometer. Similarly, the axial length was determined by automatic measurements using the Digital B System IV (Cooper Vision) and manual measurements using the Ophthascan S (Biophysic Medical). Statistical evaluation showed that there were no significant differences in the corneal refractive power determined by the two methods or in the IOL power calculated using the SRK formula. Therefore, automatic measurement of both corneal refractive power and axial length following the above method can be a useful alternative to the preoperative determination of the IOL power.

[Transvaginal ultrasound biometry of crown-rump length in the 1st trimester].

The embryonary crown-rump-length (CRL) in 225 pregnant women between the 6th and 13th week of gestation was measured by the technique of transvaginal sonography. A curve and a rate of growth was determined. The investigation showed that the CRL can already be measured in the 6th week of gestation when using transvaginal sonography, whereas transabdominal sonography makes a CRL measurement in the 7th week possible. A comparison of results and growth rates revealed a deviation up to 12th week of gestation age in both ultrasound methods. The known tabels with embryonary data, obtained by transabdominal technique, should not be used any longer for CRL determination, when prefering the technique of transvaginal sonography.

A method for improved biometry of the anterior chamber with a Scheimpflug technique.

A new method is described for obtaining cross-sectional images of the anterior chamber. Photographs are obtained with a Scheimpflug slit-lamp camera. After cornea, iris, and lens surfaces are digitized, mathematical corrections are made for the camera distortion and for the refractive effects of the cornea. The reproducibility and accuracy of the method were tested and found to be adequate for clinical study of human eyes in physiologic or diseased states.
