The effect of age, sex, nutritive condition and organochlorine concentration on blubber retinoid concentrations was examined in 74 common dolphins incidentally caught off northwestern Spain. Age and blubber lipid content were strong determinants of the retinoid concentrations in males, while these variables did not account for the variation found in females. Retinoids were positively correlated with organochlorines in males and negatively in females. However, pollution levels were moderate and likely to be below threshold levels above that a toxicological response is to be expected. Thus, a cause-effect relationship between organochlorine and retinoid concentrations could not be properly established, and the observed correlation may be the result of an independent association of the two variables with age. Further research on the influence of the best predictor variables on retinoid dynamics is required to implement the use of retinoids as biomarkers of pollutant exposure in cetaceans.

A wild common dolphin was found stranded on the French Atlantic coast. At necropsy, an intracranial grey- to tan-coloured mass (7 x 5 x 4 cm) was found at the right cerebellopontine angle, compressing the right cerebellar hemisphere, the brainstem and the occipital lobe of the right cerebral hemisphere. Microscopically, the tumour was composed of small lobules of polygonal to elongated neoplastic cells with multifocal areas of stellate and vacuolated cells. Neoplastic cells strongly expressed vimentin, S-100 protein and neuron-specific enolase. They were rarely positive for cytokeratin. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells displayed all the diagnostic features of meningiomas and in some areas showed long cytoplasmic processes delimiting extracellular spaces. The immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features were consistent with the histopathological diagnosis of a microcystic meningioma. This is the first report of a meningioma in dolphins or in any other cetacean species.

Of 14 common dolphins, 12 showed non-specific reactive hepatitis and three chronic parasitic cholangitis with lymphoid proliferation. Non-specific reactive hepatitis was shown immunohistochemically to be associated with small clusters of CD3(+) cells in portal areas and hepatic sinusoids. Polyclonal antibody against S100 protein reacted with a variable number of lymphocytes from portal areas and hepatic sinusoids, as well as with Kupffer cells and epithelial cells of the bile ducts. The majority of plasma cells observed in portal areas and hepatic sinusoids were IgG(+). In lymphonodular lesions of chronic parasitic cholangitis, the distribution of immunoreactive cells was similar to that found in the cortex of lymph nodes. The presence of stellate cells similar to follicular dendritic and interdigitating cells expressing S-100 protein and MHC class II antigen in lymphonodular lesions suggested that these were highly organized structures developed to enhance antigen presentation to B and T cells.
The concentrations of Hg, Sn, Cr, Zn, Ni, Co, Cd, Mn, Fe and Cu were determined in the liver, kidney and muscle of 24 common dolphins stranded on the Portuguese coast between 1995 and 1998. Nitric acid was used to extract the metals from the tissues for analysis by inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP/AES). Those metals with relatively higher concentrations included Fe, Zn and Hg, particularly in liver. Other metals including Cr, Ni and Cd tended to show much lower levels, or were even undetected (e.g. Co). Different metals seemed to show different temporal trends, although due to substantial variations of the mean concentrations for each year obtained, such temporal pattern has to be studied further. Total Hg concentration in the kidney, muscle and particularly liver, were higher in females than in males. Total Hg concentrations in all the organs increased with body length of dolphins, whilst those of Zn and Cu in muscle decreased with dolphin length. A strong correlation was found between essential metals Zn and Cu in muscle, possibly resulting from sequestration of these metals by metallothionein. In addition, significant co-associations existed between the same metal (e.g. Hg, Sn and Zn) in different organs.

Endogenous psychoses are pathological disorders of time sensation. Disorders generally classified as "mental insanity", "mental illness" or "psychoses" are disorders involving time. The mind can become derailed or go astray on the lines of time consciousness. Mental and biological life are inseparably interlinked on the basis of time, and will be apprehended by perception and experience as a uniform structure within the co-ordinates of space and time. In this manner, the "Body and Soul" problem loses the character of an insoluble riddle.
