Effects of early undernutrition on motivation and discrimination learning in rats.

Offspring were either adequately nourished or undernourished during the suckling period. They had free access to food from weaning, and were given 2 behavioral tests between 13 and 19 weeks of age. Motivation for water was tested on a variable interval (VI) schedule at 3 levels of deprivation and a test of light-dark discrimination made at 23.5 hr of water deprivation. The results indicated (1) no clear difference in VI response rate, but (2) significant differences in discrimination performance between the 2 groups. A learning ability or certain relevant abilities rather than motivation for water appeared responsible for the difference in discrimination learning.

Retroactive interference in discrimination learning.

In stage 1 of this experiment pigeons were trained to discriminate between two levels of noise or two colors by pecking on one of two disks. In stage 2 the discriminative stimuli were not presented, but pecking on the disks was rewarded on a random schedule. The second procedure caused the pigeons to forget the discrimination they had learned.

Chronic moderate hyperammonemia impairs active and passive avoidance behavior and conditional discrimination learning in rats.

The cerebral dysfunction associated with hepatic encephalopathy is generally considered to have hyperammonemia as one of its main causes. Hyperammonemia impairs the neuronal glutamate-nitric oxide-cyclic GMP pathway and the induction of NMDA receptor-dependent long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. We studied the performance of pre/neonatally and postnatally exposed rats to hyperammonemia on active avoidance, passive avoidance, and conditional discrimination tasks. Pre/neonatal hyperammonemia slowed learning of active avoidance behaviors and impaired memory for the passive avoidance task while postnatal hyperammonemia impaired learning on the conditional discrimination task. Hyperammonemia thus may produce cognitive disturbances that relate to the effects of ammonia on the neuronal glutamate-nitric oxide-cyclic GMP pathway.

Temporal correlates of discrimination learning.

The relationship between human temporal behavior and learning was investigated by means of an experimental design which measured temporal behavior using the methods of reproduction and production as possible correlates for a complex-form of discrimination-reversal learning. The results indicated that the method of reproduction is a temporal correlate of original learning and that the method of production is a temporal correlate of reversal learning. The theoretical explanations proposed for these results employed the mechanisms of conditioning, extinction, and stimulus generalization, the intervening variables of excitation and inhibition and the Pavlovian levels of behavioral organization of the first and second signalling systems.
