Hysterical personality: an appraisal in light of empirical research.

An overview of the term hysterical personality is presented and existing measures of this construct are described. Statistical studies of hysterical personality are then reviewed, emphasizing the extent to which they support theory, clinical observation, description, and prediction. Evidence is still needed to bolster claims of empirical validity and it remains an open question whether hysterical personality should be viewed as a legitimate concept in its own right or as a form of extraversion. Empirical data are also needed on etiological determinants, psychological correlates, and response to experimental manipulations. However, empirically based findings to date indicate that a premorbid hysterical personality is not a necessary or sufficient factor in the development of conversion reactions. It is concluded that relative to other well known personality types there has been only a modest amount of empirical research on hysterical personality. Suggestions for future research directions are made.

Neurotic verbalizations: an exploration of a Gestalt therapy assumption.

Based upon assumptions of Gestalt Therapy, an objective, reliable scoring system for analyzing a specific aspect of verbal behavior, avoidant verbalization, was developed. Verbal samples were elicited from 30 female college students who previously had been rank ordered on the Neuroticism scale of the Maudsley Personality Inventory. The expectation that psychologically stressful questions would result in a significantly greater number of avoidant verbalizations was confirmed. Contrary to another expectation, no significant correlation between neuroticism as measured by the MPI and total number of avoidant verbalizations uttered by the Ss was found. Results were interpreted on the basis of the Gestalt Therapy theory of personality.

Personality dependent effects of the ACTH 4--10 fragment on test performances and on concomitant autonomic reactions.

The effect of the ACTH-fragment 4--10 (30 mg SC) on a mental performance test and on some concomitant cardiovascular changes was investigated in comparison with a placebo in a double blind cross-over study. The subjects were either mainly extraverted or mainly introverted according to Eysenck's 'Maudsley Personality Inventory'. Under the influence of the heptapeptide extraverted subjects achieved a higher total score in the mental task performance with a smaller increase of forearm blood flow and of heart rate than under the influence of the placebo. In contrast, under the influence of the placebo introverted subjects achieved a higher total score in the mental task performance with a smaller increase of forearm blood flow and of heart rate than under the influence of the ACTH-fragment. Personality, therefore, determines to some degree how this centrally acting heptapeptide influences efficiency in the mental task performance and the concomitant cardiovascular changes.

Personality traits of women with a history of childhood sexual abuse.

This study examined relationships between specific dimensions of childhood sexual abuse and personality traits in adulthood. Study participants were 74 hospitalized female psychiatric patients with a self-reported history of childhood sexual abuse. Characteristics of childhood sexual abuse were obtained from a structured life-events interview. Personality was measured with the NEO-Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), which yields scores on neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. We hypothesized that parental abuse, intercourse, and the combination of these two childhood sexual abuse characteristics would be associated with personality traits. Supporting this hypothesis, women who were abused by a parent had lower scores on openness to experience than women who were abused by someone else. Patients whose abuse history included both parental abuse and intercourse had very low extraversion scores. Our findings suggest that there are associations between personality traits and childhood sexual abuse characteristics in psychiatric patients. Specifically, women who experienced intercourse by a parent may be more introverted and less open to experience than women whose sexual abuse history does not include parental incest.

Personality factors associated with anticipatory nausea/vomiting in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy.

One hundred cancer chemotherapy patients rated the severity of pre- and posttreatment nausea and emesis and completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. In addition, scores on the Millon Behavioral Health Inventory were obtained for 59 of those patients. Thirty-three percent of the patients reported having experienced anticipatory nausea and 11% reported having experienced anticipatory vomiting. Patients who experienced anticipatory nausea had more posttreatment nausea and vomiting, were more depressed, and were characteristically more anxious than other patients. A personality profile including the future despair, social alienation, and inhibited style (from the Millon Behavioral Health Inventory) identified patients with anticipatory nausea.

Further contrasts between self-reflectiveness and internal state awareness factors of private self-consciousness.

Although widely used as a unitary measure of self-focused attention, the Private Self-Consciousness subscale (Fenigstein, Scheier, & Buss, 1975) contains two factors. In the present study, this subscale and its self-reflectiveness (SR) factor predicted greater shame, guilt, other-directedness, and social anxiety; but the internal state awareness (ISA) factor displayed relationships that were in the opposite direction. Contrasts between SR and ISA often became more obvious in partial correlations, when one factor was examined while controlling for the other. In relationships with personal and social identity, SR appeared to reflect public as much as private self-consciousness. These data support recent suggestions that it may be necessary to construct more adequate measures of private self-consciousness.

Who cares about ecology? Personality and sex differences in environmental concern.

This study was designed to identify personality factors that underlie concern for ecological-environmental problems. High and low environmental-concern individuals were given the California Psychological Inventory and were found to differ significantly on many subscales. A factor analysis of the CPI data produced four factors which closely paralleled previous CPI research findings. In conjunction with this analysis, four factorially derived scores were obtained for each individual. Comparison of high and low environmental-concern individual's factorially derived scores showed high environmental-concern persons as having stronger value orientation, person orientation, and ethical-conscientiousness, but not differing from low environmental-concern individuals in terms of independence of thought or action. Further, high environmental-concern females were found to be significantly more extraverted, "leader-types" than low environmental-concern females; while the opposite relation was obtained for males. Thus, it appears that men and women become involved with the environmental movement for different reasons, Finally, additional implications of the involvement of basic psychological individual differences in determining ecological-environmental concern were discussed.
