Potential for the usage of information technologies and communications (ITC) in the teaching and practice of nurses in Madeira.

The propose of this communication is to describe the present nursing situation in Madeira (RAM) and its potentialities for the utilisation of the Information Technologies and Communications (I.T.C.) in educational and in clinical practice. RAM has its own Regional Health System and is developing a Health Information System, a Nursing Education System which conglobates a Baccalaureate Nursing School and a Licentiate's degree Nursing School which graduates almost the totality of the nurses who work here in Madeira, a Health Professional Education Department, common to the different organisations and a Regional Nursing Research Group constituted by elements representing the several organisations of health and which has been developing Research Education and dynamize Research Projects in nursing practice. The Nursing Schools in addition to the Health Organisation, use the Nursing Theoretical Models and the Nursing Process since 1990 Referring to the utilisation of the ITC in Education and in the Clinical Practice, despite the school curricula include informatics subjects, nurse's knowledge and opportunities of utilisation are still too incipient. Nevertheless, the present reform of the baccalaureate course curriculum as well as the aims and strategies of the Nursing Research Group and training strategies will provide positive changes.

Standardized nursing vocabularies: a foundation for quality care.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the importance of standardized nursing vocabularies as a foundation for quality in health care decision-making. DATA SOURCES: Literature, online sources, and committee documents. CONCLUSIONS: Several standardized vocabularies are recognized by the American Nurses Association Committee for Nursing Practice Information Infrastructure. Vendors also have integrated the vocabularies into their information systems. Future efforts include developing an international nursing reference terminology. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Oncology nurses face quality of care issues that impact decision-making at the point of care. To describe their practice, oncology nurses must strive to use nursing data that are standardized, documented, and made visible by inclusion in computer-based systems.

Telematic technologies offer innovative and creative resources to address their needs by means of a web-based psychoeducational program. The development of a comprehensive web-based program that deals with the lived experiences of adolescent suicide survivors is described. Potential program users include adolescent suicide survivors, social supporters of suicide survivors, mental health professionals and survivor support groups.

Benefits and costs of integrating technology into undergraduate nursing programs.

Advances in technology over the last decade have resulted in increased opportunities for educators to become more innovative in classroom and clinical teaching. These innovations have allowed students and faculty to access essential clinical information at the point of care/need. By capitalizing on technologies such as personal digital assistants and course delivery shells, faculty and students have both portable and remote access to information that can guide practice and learning activities in clinical, classroom, and distance settings. For instance, a student can use a personal digital assistant to research a patient's new medication at the bedside, study course information, access references during class in response to a question, or download clinical materials from home. Although the benefits of having ready access to information seem obvious, there are costs and strategic planning activities associated with implementing these projects. Clearly, the objective of any academic nursing program is to develop skills among students so they can efficiently access information and use that information to guide their nursing practice. To do so, academic nursing administrators must have the forethought to envision how new technologies can support achieving this goal as well as the ability to put in place the infrastructure supports needed for success. This article presents a case study of how one institution developed the necessary infrastructure and garnished the appropriate resources to implement an ambitious technology initiative integrated throughout a large undergraduate nursing program. In addition, how the integration of technology, online and mobile, can enhance clinical learning will be discussed.

The development of variable MLM editor and TSQL translator based on Arden Syntax in Taiwan.

The Arden Syntax standard has been utilized in the medical informatics community in several countries during the past decade. It is never used in nursing in Taiwan. We try to develop a system that acquire medical expert knowledge in Chinese and translates data and logic slot into TSQL Language. The system implements TSQL translator interpreting database queries referred to in the knowledge modules. The decision-support systems in medicine are data driven system where TSQL triggers as inference engine can be used to facilitate linking to a database.
