[Placental lactogen level and activity of oxytocinase, beta-glucuronidase and thermostable alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme in blood serum of women with ectopic pregnancy].

The lack of literature data dealing with placental lactogen concentration as well as with the other biochemical parameters in blood serum in women with ectopic pregnancy was the reason we turned to that problem. In eight patients with ectopic pregnancy there was determined placental lactogen level and oxytocinase activity as well as the activity of beta-glucuronidase and thermostable alkali phosphatase isoenzyme in blood serum. The results obtained were compared to the concentration of those parameters in blood serum in women with ectopic pregnancy and to those of not pregnant women. It was stated that in women with ectopic pregnancy there was produced placental lactogen and its concentration in blood serum was lower (about 30 percent) than that in women with ectopic pregnancy. Similarly, mean value of oxytocinase activity in women with ectopic pregnancy was twice lower in comparison to that of ectopic pregnancy, while beta-glucuronidase activity was twice higher when compared to that of ectopic pregnancy values. Placental alkali phosphatase isoenzyme activity was similar in both groups of pregnant women.

[Early biological disorders in acute intestinal ischemia in the rat. Determination of blood phosphorus and serum alkaline phosphatase].

Though difficult, early diagnosis of acute intestinal ischemia is essential in order to improve the prognosis of this major affection. The possibility that early modifications in biological parameters could provide such data was explored. Serum alkaline phosphatase levels were unaltered, whereas blood phosphorus concentrations were increased during AII of arterial or venous origin in the rat. The latter test therefore provides an early specific indication of the diagnosis, the mechanism involved being liberation of phosphate ions from the intestine, enhanced by a functional renal insufficiency.

Efficacy and safety of dexfenfluramine in obese patients: a multicenter study.

We have evaluated the effects of dextrofenfluramine treatment on body weight control during a 90 day period, in obese patients on a calorie-restricted diet. The weight loss in dextrofenfluramine-treated patients was significantly higher than in placebo group. The rate of weight loss was linear up to the end of the trial in d-fenfluramine patients. Neural disturbances (vertigo, headache, depression) were the most frequent side effects observed in both the d-fenfluramine and in the placebo-treated groups, without significant differences between the groups. A total number of 23 patients in the dextrofenfluramine group and 20 patients in the placebo group complained side effects. Six patients (five in the d-fenfluramine group and one in the placebo group) discontinued the treatment, due to the side effects. No modifications of the biochemical parameters considered (fasting blood glucose, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, blood cell counts, asparate-amino transferase (AST), alanine-amino transferase (ALT), total plasma and HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides) were observed at the end of the trial. A significant reduction of total serum cholesterol was observed in both groups at the end of the period of treatment. In conclusion, dextrafenfluramine was proved to be in short term trials an effective and safe tool in overweight control in obese patients.

[Correlation of blood zinc and alkaline phosphatase].

Out a group of 28 sheep the serum values of zinc and alkaline phosphatase were checked. A positive correlation between low values of zinc and alkaline phosphatase was ascertained. This could help in the diagnosis of zinc deficiency.

A comparison using quantitative enzyme cytochemistry between leucocyte alkaline phosphatase levels in the bone marrow and blood of the rat.

Leucocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP) levels have been compared in neutrophil polymorphs in bone marrow and blood in the rat, using a quantitative enzyme cytochemical technique. It has been shown that LAP levels are higher in bone marrow than blood, both in normal animals and those with experimentally-induced local inflammatory lesions. In the latter group both marrow and blood LAP levels were higher than in controls; blood levels rose because of the outpouring of cells with moderately high LAP levels into the blood and marrow levels rose because only cells with very high LAP levels remained. The inverse relationship between neutrophil age and alkaline phosphatase content, previously demonstrated in the peripheral blood of the rat, has also been shown to exist in the bone marrow.

[Effective treatment of duodenal ulcer with cimetidine (author's transl)].

Twelve male duodenal ulcer in-patients received in a double-blind trial either the histamine H2-receptor antagonist cimetidine (4 X 200 mg/d p.o.) or placebo capsules. Ulcer sizes were assessed endoscopically before therapy followed by repeat endoscopy at weekly intervals. Duodenal ulcer healing was significantly more rapid in cimetidine-treated patients than in those receiving the placebo (chi2 test; P less than 0.0005). Plotting of log ulcer sizes (mm2) against time (days) resulted in regression lines the slopes of which indicated the respective half-time of ulcer healing: about 6 days on cimetidine therapy and about 20 days on placebo treatment. Gastric secretion of acid, protein, pepsin, and N-acetylneuraminic acid-containing glycoproteins was not altered by a 4-week course of daily cimetidine or placebo, nor pancreatic secretion of bicarbonate and enzymes. No statistically significant changes in laboratory findings (haemoglobin, white blood-cells, neutrophils, platelets, alkaline phosphatase, blood-urea, serum-creatinine, GOT, GPT) were associated with treatment.

Alkaline phosphatase activity in the inner ear blood vessels of some mammals.

The distribuation pattern of alkaline phosphatase in small blood vessels was studied histochemically in the stria vascularis and spiral ligament of various mammals. No or extremely weak activity of the enzyme was demonstrated in the walls of the blood vessels in bat and rabbit, while moderate to intense activity was found in guinea pig, cat, squirrel monkey and man. There was a species difference in the phosphate metabolism in the walls of the inner ear blood vessels.
