Consent and privacy in pharmacogenetic testing.

The clinical use of pharmacogenetic drugs will require that a sample of a patient's DNA be tested before a drug is prescribed. Although pharmacogenetic tests pose fewer risks than genetic tests for disease mutations, they might still reveal personal information that could be used adversely to a patient's interests. Informed consent and privacy of pharmacogenetic test results may be essential in most clinical uses of pharmacogenetic drugs.

Animal infection models and ethics -- the perfect infection model.

Experimental infection models have long been recognized as an essential part of testing anti-infective therapies. A perfect animal model would be a model that satisfied not only scientific criteria, but ethical criteria as well. In the design and execution of such experiments, scientific and ethical considerations are not mutually exclusive, but should be convergent and therefore result in the optimal model.

Acute stroke trials: the problems of local investigators?

During stroke trials local investigators have to face many practical problems and time consuming procedures (filling in huge case report forms, performing repeat blood sample drawings for pharmacokinetic studies etc.) which, however, simply require organizational structures which is understood to be necessary to be able to conduct such kind of studies. Other, and most worrisome problems, are indeed to be solved when a sponsored research may rise potential ethical issues, or when academic research proposals clash with the interest of pharmaceutical companies or find difficulties in being funded by public institutions. It is just a greater involvement of these latter, possibly free from bureaucratic laces, which might help a balance to be struck between academic and industrial aims.
