[The effect of immersion in distilled water on the engorged larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius,1787)(Acari: Ixodidae)].

To evaluate the effect of the immersion of engorged larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma cajennense, these stages were immersed by 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours in test tubes containing distilled water. The period of premolt of the nymphs increased proportionally to the time of immersion (p<0.05). The ecdisis period, the longevity and the mortality (days) were similar in all of treatments (p>0.05). The percentage of ecdisis in nymphs was reduced after 72 hours of immersion of the larvae (p<0.05). None of the engorged nymphs survived 96 hours of immersion. The period of the adult premolt increased after 48 hours of immersion (p<0.05). The ecdisis period was similar in the treatments of 24 and 48 hours of immersion (p>0.05). The percentage of ecdisis decreased starting from 24 hours of immersion (p<0.05). There was not statistical difference (p<0.05) between the control group and the 24 hours group of immersion for the parameters longevity and mortality. These findings suggest that the engorged nymphs were more sensitive to the immersion that the engorged larvae.

[The nonspecific bronchial stimulation test with methacholine and an ultrasonic mist of distilled water: which is to be preferred in the military sphere?].

The authors compare the methacholine (Mch) and the nebulized ultrasonic distilled water (NUDW) bronchial challenge as regard sensitivity and time required to perform them. For military service fitness, were studied 24 asthmatic patients. Each subject performed random a bronchial challenge by Mch (Yan method) and by NUDW (Allegra method) in two different days; for each bronchial challenge has been measured the time required to perform it. The atopic status has been evaluated by skin-prick test. All the subjects have shown a positive response to Mch test (PD 20 FEV1 mean: 352 mcg, range 80-850) whereas 13 subjects (54%) have shown a positive response to NUDW. The time required to evaluate all the subjects by Mch test has been 199.5 minutes whereas the total time required to evaluate all the subjects by NUDW test (127 minutes) and to evaluate by Mch test the non responders to NUDW (100 minutes) has been 227 minutes. The most of subjects were skin reactors. No difference was found as regard onset of disease, basal lung function and atopic status between responders and non responders to NUDW test. We conclude that NUDW test has shown a lack of sensitivity in this sample (50% of asthmatic patients could be misdiagnosed) and that the Mch test is preferable to determine a rapid method for measurement of bronchial responsiveness.

[The effect of immersion in distilled water on the engorged larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma dubitatum Neumann, 1899 (Acari: Ixodidae)].

To evaluate the effect of the immersion of engorged larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma dubitatum experimentally fed on rabbits, the ticks were collected and formed control groups, without immersion, and groups witch were immersed by 24, 48, 72, 96 hours and, for engorged larvaes, by eight weeks, in test tubes containing distilled water. During all experiment ticks were kept at 27 +/- 1 degrees C, 80 +/- 10% RU and scotophase The parameters evaluated were: pre-ecdysis, ecdysis and moulting periods; and ecdysis and mortality percentages. When compared with the control group, the effect (p<0,05) of immersion varied intra and inter stages. Apparently, immersion was less deleterious to A. dubitatum in comparison with A. cajennense and R. sanguineus from neotropical region, thus reflecting a long host relations with the capybara, its primary host.

Bronchodilating activity of broxaterol transdermal patch and its protective effect on bronchial constriction induced by inhaled distilled water mist.

The bronchodilating activity and the ability of broxaterol transdermal patch to inhibit bronchial constriction in response to distilled water mist (UNH2O) inhalation were assessed. The study was performed in 10 asthmatic patients in clinical remission according to a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized crossover design. Test medications were broxaterol patch (size = 1.75 cm2; programmed delivery = 105 mcg/h) and a matched placebo patch. A spirometric examination was performed before patch application (at 8:30-9:00 a.m.) and 24 hours later. Immediately afterwards, the UNH2O inhalation test was made, consisting of 3 bronchial exposures lasting 30, 60 and 120 s respectively with 3-minute intervals between challenges. Immediately after each exposure, a spirometric examination and specific airway resistance measurements were made. The results obtained show that broxaterol patch exerts a statistically significant bronchodilating effect and has a better protective effect than placebo patch on UNH2O-induced bronchial constriction. The local tolerability of patches was very good. Slight tremors were observed in some subjects.

[Changes in the morphological structure of the skin and internal organs of guinea pigs after multiple epicutaneous exposures to furfural, a distillate of D-11 mineral oil and their combinations].

Experimental multiple epicutaneous exposure of guinea pigs to furfural and D-11 mineral oil distillate and their combinations in various concentrations has resulted in structural changes of the skin and viscera. These changes were dose-dependent. Combined exposure to both agents resulted in more grave disorders than isolated exposures in the same doses.

[The irritating action of oil-refining products (furfural and mineral oil distillate D-11) on the skin of laboratory animals from isolated and joint exposures].

Experimental data demonstrate a manifest skin irritating action of D-11 mineral oil distillate and furfural used in oil processing. The minimal effective concentrations of these chemicals have been defined. The irritating effects are enhanced in exposure to their combination. These data are recommended to be used when developing prophylactic measures.

Nutrition evaluation and mutagenicity testing of freeze-dried distiller's grains with solubles.

Distiller's grains with solubles (DGS) was obtained from a commercial fermentation of 90% corn and 10% wheat for ethanol production. The DGS was freeze-dried and proximate analysis resulted in 17.6% protein, 5.5% fat, 3.0% ash, 17.3% moisture, 21.6% neutral detergent fiber, and 35% carbohydrate by difference. Fatty acid analysis and amino acid analysis were similar to those of corn. Tryptophan was the limiting amino acid with a chemical score of 47. Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) was 1.49. Mutagenicity testing of lipid and aqueous extracts of DGS in the Ames Salmonella mammalian microsome assay were negative.

[Treatment of enuresis by the epidural infiltration of distilled water. Clinico-statistical and therapeutic considerations in a series of 48 treated cases].

The clinical results in a series of 48 children with enuresis treated by a new therapeutical approach based on the epidural distilled water infiltration associated with drug therapy and hygienic and dietary measures are presented. After 1-3 treatment courses, cures were obtained in 89.5% of the children, improvements in 6.2% and in 4.1% the treatment failed. The neuropsychic disturbances, found at presentation in 25% of the children, improved or were no longer present in 58.3% of the children in the 3 months interval following the clinical cure of enuresis. No accidents due to infiltration, except some minor incidents, were recorded.

Effect of terfenadine on the bronchoconstriction induced by ultrasonically nebulized distilled water.

Ultrasonically nebulized distilled water (UNDW) has been shown to induce bronchoconstriction in asthmatics. The proposed mechanism is through changes in osmolarity of the airway fluids and subsequent release of mediators from airway mast cells. We investigated whether terfenadine has a protective effect on UNDW challenges. Twelve mild-to-moderate asthmatics responded to screening a methacholine and UNDW challenge. For four hours after the ingestion of 0, 120, and 240 mg of terfenadine pulmonary responses were performed, followed by a UNDW challenge. Nine of 12 subjects dropped 20% after 120 mg and after 240 mg. There was a suggestion of a protective effect at 120 mg (P = .054), which was significant at 240 mg (P = .012) when the areas under the dose-response curves were compared. Bronchoconstriction induced by UNDW may in part be caused by histamine release and was attenuated by an oral antihistamine.

Comparison between refractoriness after distilled water-induced asthma and exercise-induced asthma.

Inhalation of distilled water (DW) frequently induces bronchoconstriction in asthmatic patients. We compared the degree of refractoriness to repeated inhalation of DW to that of repeated exercise challenge in 14 asthmatics. Refractoriness was seen following inhalation of DW. The maximum drop in FEV1 (% of predicted) following the first challenge was 31 +/- 13% and the maximal drop following the second challenge was 18 +/- 9% (P less than .01). The pattern of the airway response seen during 45 minutes following repeated inhalation of DW and exercise was similar. Cross refractoriness was also seen when inhalation of DW followed exercise challenge. It was concluded that both stimuli probably share a common mechanism of action on the airway.

Refractory period to ultrasonic mist of distilled water: relationship to methacholine responsiveness, atopic status, and clinical characteristics.

Twenty asthmatic subjects had two successive methacholine challenges, two successive challenges with ultrasonically nebulized distilled water (UNDW) and an UNDW followed by methacholine on three separate days. Only ten subjects showed a refractory period to repeated UNDW stimulation. Prior stimulation with UNDW provoked increased methacholine responsiveness in the non-refractory group and a more rapid recovery from methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction in the refractory subset.

Determination of sulfur dioxide in foods by modified Monier-Williams distillation and polarographic detection.

A rapid, sensitive polarographic method is presented for determining sulfiting agents in foods and beverages. The method is based on the modified Monier-Williams distillation followed by polarographic detection by differential pulse polarography or square wave voltammetry. A clearly defined wave is obtained by both techniques, with a current maximum at a potential (E) of about -600 mV vs an Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The reaction is based on the reduction of sulfur dioxide at a dropping mercury electrode. Peak current was linear over the range 0-20 micrograms/mL. Quantitation is done by linear regression analysis of standard addition data or by using a standard calibration graph. Screening levels of less than 1 ppm total SO2 were easily achieved in the foods analyzed, which had levels from less than 1 ppm (cereals) to thousands of parts per million (dried fruit). Recoveries from fortified samples ranged from 70 to 108% at fortification levels of 20, 100, and 1000 micrograms/g.

Analysis for total sulfite in foods by using rapid distillation followed by redox titration.

A rapid and accurate analysis for total sulfite as sulfur dioxide has been developed for foods and food products. The method, which combines a selective distillation cleanup procedure with the selective redox titration of sulfite ion by iodine, has been applied to a variety of foods and food products over a period of time with no significant interference encountered in any matrixes other than garlic and leeks. For the foods analyzed, the method typically shows a detection limit of 10 ppm, a relative standard deviation of 7.5% (compared with 10.4% for similar matrixes by the Monier-Williams method), and recoveries of 97.9 +/- 6.4%. Comparison of results for this method with those obtained using the Monier-Williams method showed a mean value for the distillation/titration method of 241 ppm compared with 242 ppm for the Monier-Williams method. A correlation of 0.991 and odds of a difference between methods of 10.7% (Student's paired t-test (1-alpha) X 100) were obtained for those matrixes where no interferences were encountered with either method.

Antimicrobial and toxicological studies on an antiseptic based on hexachlorophene and destructive distillate of castor oil.

Bactericidal, bacteriostatic, fungistatic and toxicological evaluaton of an emulsion containing 0.25% hexachlorophene (W/V), 9.5% terpineol (V/V), 1.5% oil of terpentine (V/V), 13% ethanol (V/V), 6% castor oil distillate 1201275 degrees C (V/V) and 6% sodium salt of the residue (W/V) in aqueous medium was performed. The bactericidal concentration for Salmonella typhi was found to be 1:400 which increased to 1:350 in the presence of 5% horse serum. The bacteriostatic concentration of the emulsion varied from organism to organism. A 4% solution of the emulsione was found to be most effective against Microsporum vanbreuseghemii showing an inhibition zone of 7.2 cm and was least effective on Aspergillus niger. 1 to 8% solution of the emulsion given orally or instilled into conjunctival sacs of albino mice indicated lethal and insignificant toxic manifestations respectively but a dose equivalent to 50 mg/Kg given subcutaneously was found to produce a subacute lethal effect in guinea pigs.

Specific distribution of short-chain fatty acids in molecular distillates of bovine milk fat.

Triglycerides with a total of 34-44 acyl carbon atoms have previously been shown to account for nearly 50% of bovine milk fat. About 80% of this material was isolated by molecular distillation and a representative fraction of these glycerides was subjected to a stereospecific analysis. Of the 29 moles % of C(4)-C(8) fatty acids present in the analyzed fraction, at least 95% were specifically attached to the glycerol molecule in the position corresponding to carbon 3 of sn-glycerol 3-(dihydrogen phosphate) (L-alpha-glycerophosphate). The distribution of the other fatty acids (C(10) or greater) did not show such marked specificity for either the 1- or the 2-position. The data support the hypothesis that the short-chain fatty acids are esterified with long-chain diglycerides, or are substituted in glycerophosphatide intermediates, during the final step in the biosynthesis of milk fat triglycerides.
