Desquamative gingival lesions are non-plaque induced inflammatory gingival lesions. It is a clinical description and not a diagnosis. These desquamative lesions represent oral manifestations of various dermatoses. Systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), one of the rare dermatoses shows desquamative lesions as the oral manifestation. We here with report a case of SLE with oral lesions involving gingiva of a 36 year old female patient. The clinical presentation, histological features, and investigatory findings are discussed.

BACKGROUND: A computerised morphometric analysis of some vascularisation aspects of epulides is presented. The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between morphometric aspects and histological classification of epulides and to investigate its usefulness for the histopathologic diagnosis. METHODS: The study was carried out on epulides from 72 patients (30 males, 42 females, age-range 16-60). Epulides were fixed in alcohol, paraffin embedded, and stained with haematoxyilin eosin, thereafter epulides were histopathologically classified as granulomatous epulides, fibrous epulides and giant cell epulides. Images of histological samples were then digitised, and by an image analysis system some morphometric vessels characteristics were evaluated: percent image area occupied by vessels, vessels number, mean vessels area and standard deviation of vessels area. Finally, the correlation between morphometric data and the histological classification of epulides was evaluated. RESULTS: The statistic evaluation of morphometric data allowed to classify epulides in six groups characterised by a various degree of vascularisation, these groups showed a good correlation with histopathological classification. CONCLUSIONS: The morphometric analysis of vessels is a powerful aid for the histopathologic diagnosis and for a better knowledge of the etiopathogenetic factors of epulides.
The objective of this article is to familiarize the dentist with clinical signs and laboratory methods used in diagnosing nutritional deficiencies, and to indicate which laboratory methods may be useful to the clinician in cases of suspected nutritional deficiency. It should be noted that the suggested laboratory methods were selected on the basis of their applicability for the clinical situation as well as their reliability as indicators of nutritional status. Therefore these suggested methods of choice may not in every instance be the most accurate of all indicators of nutritional status for a particular nutrient. The dentist who wishes to utilize one of the laboratory methods has a number of options. He can take the appropriate sample in his office, or refer the patient directly to a clinical laboratory for the simpler analyses, or refer his patient to a physician for appropriate metabolic testing. The first option may be more appropriate for the dentist practicing in areas where a clinical laboratory is not within reasonable distance. In this instance the dentist should contact the laboratory for specific information, such as sample volume and special instructions for taking, handling, and shipping the sample. The second option is available to the dentist practicing in an urban area where clinical laboratory facilities are readily available. Finally, the dentist should work in conjunction with a physician when complex metabolic testing is required.

The stabilization of inflammatory periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) and result periodontal maintenance is achieved most effectively by first establishing health within the dento-gingival complex (connective tissue, junctional epithelium, and sulcus). Two forms of surgical periodontal therapy commonly employed to reach this endpoint are resective in nature:, the gingivectomy/gingivoplasty technique for soft tissue resection and the ostectomy (osteoectomy)/ osteoplasty approach for hard tissue resection. These two forms of therapy are presented here from a historical perspective through to today's accepted methodology. The are agumented by literature references and presentations of clinical cases.

A slowly enlarging gingival mass with a reddish-purple surface is observed in a school-age boy. The lesion was first noted 3 months ago during a routine oral examination but recently it has increased in size and interferes with eating. A periapical radiograph demonstrated focal loss of the alveolar crestal bone in the mandibular incisor region. The diagnosis of peripheral giant cell granuloma, a benign reactive gingival lesion, is confirmed by histopathologic examination. Early detection and excision of this hyperplastic nodule is important to minimize potential dentoalveolar complications.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical quality of 191 porcelain laminate veneers and to explore the gingival response in a long-term survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical examination was made by two calibrated examiners following modified California Dental Association/Ryge criteria. In addition, margin index, papillary bleeding index, sulcus probing depth, and increase in gingival recession were recorded. Two age groups were formed to evaluate the influence of wearing time upon the clinical results. The results were statistically evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier survival estimation method, Chi-squared test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: A failure rate of 4% was found. Six of the total of seven failures were seen when veneers were partially bonded to dentin. Marginal integrity was acceptable in 99% and was rated as excellent in 63%. Superficial marginal discoloration was present in 17%. Slight marginal recession was detected in 31%, and bleeding on probing was found in 25%. CONCLUSION: Porcelain laminate veneers offer a predictable and successful treatment modality that preserves a maximum of sound tooth structure. An increased risk of failure is present only when veneers are partially bonded to dentin. The estimated survival probability over a period of 10 years is 91%.
