[The epidemiological characteristics of single cases of campylobacteriosis in urban inhabitants].

The results of the analysis of the epidemic situation in Campylobacter infection and the epidemiological markers of the strains of the infective agent have demonstrated that Campylobacter infection, registered as single cases among the residents of Vologda, has an epidemic character. An intensive and uncontrolled process among fowl (chickens) and the absence of effective measures of specific prophylaxis make it necessary that a system of hygienic measures be given priority in the complex of measures aimed at the prophylaxis of Campylobacter infection.

The isolation of salmonellae from poultry carcasses and equipment in the poultry processing plant by means of two procedures.

A total of 235 samples (swabs, rinse and organs) from freshly dressed broiler carcasses and from equipment of poultry processing plant were examined for the presence of salmonellae by means of motility enrichment on modified semisolid Rappaport medium (SAM) and of a conventional cultural procedure using Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth (R-VB) as selective enrichment. In 61 samples (26%), Salmonella was isolated by means of one or both procedures. The highest contamination with Salmonella was found in the rinse of broiler carcasses (35.5%), followed by swabs of equipment (32.0%), tissues of organs (31.0%) and swabs of carcasses (19.7%). Twelve different serotypes and 65 strains of salmonellae were detected. S. saint paul and S. enteritidis were the most frequent serotypes. Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the procedures.

[Clinical and therapeutic aspects of brucellosis].

Brucellosis is an infectious zoonosis. It is a occupational disease of stock-breeders, workers of slaughter houses and veterinarians. Brucellosis is characterized by a variety of clinical symptoms and involves several organs of the body. Skeletal manifestations often facilitate diagnosis. Difficulties in diagnosis of brucellosis in Poland are resulted from an increased amount of low-symptomatic or asymptomatic cases, a decrease in acute brucellosis and mild course of chronic disease. Therapy is related to the stage of the disease, antibiotics are required in acute brucellosis. Symptomatic treatment with special emphasis to neurological and psychiatric management is used in patients with chronic brucellosis. Early made diagnosis is important because undiagnosed disease leads to severe disability and loss of work ability.

Psychomotor capacity and occurrence of wrist tenosynovitis.

A case-referent study was carried out among meatcutters, sausage markers, and packers in a large meat-processing plant to investigate the association between psychomotor capacity and occurrence of tenosynovitis. Reaction time, movement time, manual dexterity, visual attention and visuospatial ability were measured in 26 cases with a history of two or more episodes of tenosynovitis and 26 referents of similar gender, occupation, age, and job seniority with no episodes of the disease. No differences were found between the cases and the referents in any of the tests of psychomotor capacity. The results suggest that psychomotor capacity, as measured with the tests of this study, is a poor predictor of wrist tenosynovitis.

Brucellosis: the situation in Western Nigeria.

Over 55% of 7161 people examined in different parts of Western Nigeria have positive Brucella abortus-antibodies in their sera. Higher incidence of titres were found among dairy farmers and slaughtermen than in the general population. The rates of infection among the human and the cattle populations in two farms studied were very similar. There was evidence of high rate of cross-infections going on in one of these farms: more than 63% of the herd in this farm showed serological evidence of active brucellosis. The socio-economic implications of high incidence of bovine brucellosis in a rapidly developing country, like Nigeria, are outlined. The need for the establishment of public health laboratories to facilitate early diagnosis of active disease and the necessity for full collaboration between the medical and veterinary professions for the proper control (and eradication) of brucellosis in Nigeria are discussed.

[Supervision in veterinary health (author's transl)].

The supervision programme of the Veterinary Chief Inspectorate of Public Health comprises nearly fifty projects, a number of which are discussed. This will give the authorities an opportunity to gain a more complete view of the state of the human food package, for which inspection of the individual animal in the slaughter-house does not so far offer any practical possibilities. Attention is drawn to the important place occupied by the veterinary nutritionist in the protection of human health.

[Occupational causes of erysipeloid morbidity among the workers engaged in meat-processing industry in the Lugansk region].

Erysipeloid takes the second place after eczema among other occupational diseases at the meat-processing enterprises of Lugansk region. The maximal occurrence is seen at the meat enterprises in summer. The morbidity is promoted by slight traumatism in cold and humid work conditions. Skin and joints are most frequently affected by the disease. One of each four among the sufferers demonstrates the prolonged course with longstanding arthropathies.

[The characteristics of the protein and lipid metabolic indices of poultry farmers with extrinsic allergic alveolitis].

The content of albumins, globulin fractions and cholesterol was studied in blood serum of poultry breeders with exogenic allergic alveolitis (EAA) having different service terms. Breeders suffering from EAA with service term of 1-20 years show a decrease in the albumin content and an increase in globulin fractions and cholesterol in blood which may indicate liver disturbances and hypercholesterolemia.

[The characteristics of the epidemiology of campylobacteriosis under modern conditions].

The results of the clinico-epidemiological study of campylobacteriosis in a concrete area (Kiev and the Kiev region) are presented. The proportion of campylobacteriosis cases was found to be 6.4% among patients hospitalized in connection with acute enteric infections. Hens were most frequently the source of human infection. Thus, at the local poultry farm the proportion of hens contaminated with bacteria of the genus Campylobacter was 44.8%. The possible routes of the spread of Campylobacter infection and the factors of its transmission were established. The most important element of the epidemiological marking of Campylobacter bacteria is the determination of their species and serotype.

[Significance of starter cultures for raw sausage aging in view of food and nutrition hygiene].

The authors studied the effects of liquid starter cultures on the survival of pathogenic germs. It was found that the foreign bacteria tested differed in growth limitation which is obviously dependent on acidity and the amount of lactic acid produced by fermentation. Since the pathogenic bacteria differ in the ability to survive, it is imperative to observe strict hygienic measures in preparing starter cultures and to use absolutely sterile monocultures for raw sausage ageing.

Histopathology and epidemiology of condemnations due to squamous cell carcinoma in broiler chickens in North Carolina.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) lesions were confirmed by histopathology in 94% of 176 carcasses condemned for SCC during 8-hour shifts at four different processing plants. Lesions in the remaining carcasses were diagnosed as focal ulcerative dermatitis. SCC lesions were confined to the skin; no metastasis or invasion of underlying muscle was present. Monthly prevalence of SCC condemnations at processing was obtained from two plants for a 1-year period and from two additional plants for 3-year periods. Overall study prevalence of SCC varied between 0.03% and 0.09% of total condemnations. Servicemen were found not to have an effect on SCC condemnations for the only company that had these data available. Chronological trends were evaluated for SCC condemnations. A trigonometric model predicted 6-month cycles for one processing plant over a 3-year period. The same model was used to describe 6-month cycles present in the last 12 months of a 3-year observation period in a different processing plant. Chronologic trends were evaluated qualitatively for the two other processing plants.
