Statistical modelling of water colour in the uplands: The Upper Midd catchment 1979-1987.

The increasing colour of raw water from the uplands is a matter of concern to water managers. The colour record for the period 1979-1987 is examined for the catchment of Upper Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. The variation in colour shows a marked seasonality with peaks occurring during the autumn months. No long-term sustained increase in colour is found, although colour levels were high in 1980, 1985 and 1987. Colour is found to be highly correlated with iron and, more particularly, aluminium. There is no relationship between colour and turbidity which suggests that there is no direct link between colour levels and erosion on the catchments. Colour increases appear to relate to large soil moisture deficits in months immediately prior to the colour flush and to high soil moisture deficits in the previous year. Complementary relationships are found between monthly rainfall totals and colour. In the light of these findings, it is suggested that high colour is associated with water table lowering and aerobic decomposition of the upper organic peat layers.

The importance of 'memory' in statistical models for animal feeding behaviour.

We investigate models for animal feeding behaviour, with the aim of improving understanding of how animals organise their behaviour in the short term. We consider three classes of model: hidden Markov, latent Gaussian and semi-Markov. Each can predict the typical 'clustered' feeding behaviour that is generally observed, however they differ in the extent to which 'memory' of previous behaviour is allowed to affect future behaviour. The hidden Markov model has 'lack of memory', the current behavioural state being dependent on the previous state only. The latent Gaussian model assumes feeding/non-feeding periods to occur by the thresholding of an underlying continuous variable, thereby incorporating some 'short-term memory'. The semi-Markov model, by taking into account the duration of time spent in the previous state, can be said to incorporate 'longer-term memory'. We fit each of these models to a dataset of cow feeding behaviour. We find the semi-Markov model (longer-term memory) to have the best fit to the data and the hidden Markov model (lack of memory) the worst. We argue that in view of effects of satiety on short-term feeding behaviour of animal species in general, biologically suitable models should allow 'memory' to play a role. We conclude that our findings are equally relevant for the analysis of other types of short-term behaviour that are governed by satiety-like principles.

Fast accurate stereoradiographic 3D-reconstruction of the spine using a combined geometric and statistic model.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate a fast accurate stereoradiographic 3D-reconstruction method of the spine. BACKGROUND: Stereoradiographic methods based on anatomical landmarks identification are the only ones providing information on 3D-deformities of the spine in a standing position, but require 2-4 h for the whole spine, making the method inadequate for clinical routine. METHODS: The proposed semi-automated method is based on (1) vertebral body volume reconstruction, (2) definition of a local referential associated to this volume, (3) reliable a priori knowledge of the vertebral shape using eight morphologic descriptors of the vertebral body to estimate, from a multiple linear regression, 21 3D-point coordinates per vertebra, (4) kriging of a 2000 points model with regard to the 21 points. The method was evaluated for vertebral orientation and shape accuracy. RESULTS: 3D models of the whole spine are obtained within 15 min. Manual vs. semi-automated reconstruction comparison yield similar accuracy regarding the CT-scan references. For vertebrae orientation, results were slightly different from the manual reconstruction method (however an absolute reference is lacking). CONCLUSION: The stereoradiographic 3D-reconstruction method allows for a significant reduction of the whole reconstruction time, with regard to previously described methods. Moreover, the accuracy was evaluated and was found to be comparable to the accuracy of previous methods. The results of this study show that stereoradiography could now be employed in routine clinical environment. RELEVANCE: 3D spine reconstruction from biplanar radiographs in standing position can be obtained using a fast and accurate method.

A statistical model for the heterogeneous structure of porous catalyst pellets.

The complex structures of the void space of porous media are often characterised by parameters such as pore network connectivity and lattice size. This paper presents a comparison of the estimates of these parameters obtained from two previous methods based on nitrogen sorption and mercury porosimetry, and also from a new, completely independent approach based on pulsed-gradient spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (PGSE NMR). It was found that the new PGSE NMR technique obtains estimates of connectivity and lattice size in agreement with nitrogen sorption but different to mercury porosimetry. This difference was attributed to the various physical processes involved actually probing different aspects of the pore space geometry. It was further suggested that the representation of the pore structure derived from either nitrogen sorption or PGSE NMR is really a mapping of the real pore space onto an equivalent abstract, random pore bond network. However, it has been shown that this mapping does capture some of the characteristic properties of the pore space that control transport over mesoscopic ( < 10 microm) length scales. For materials which additionally possessed macroscopic (> 10 microm) structural heterogeneity, it was found that the model could also be adapted to predict the macroscopic transport properties of the porous medium.

In situ measurement and statistical modelling of Escherichia coli decay in small rivers.

Numerous studies have been carried out on the environmental factors associated with the decay of faecal bacteria in open (fresh or marine) waters. The present study aimed at understanding the fate of bacteria in small streams (flow <20 m3 s(-1)) for which there is a lack of knowledge. An original in situ protocol was developed for measuring the die-off of Escherichia coli (E. coli) from wastewater treatment plants. Based upon 80 values of the decay first-order parameter (K or its inverse T90), collected from five rivers in Normandy (France), a median T90 of 10 h and a minimal T90 of 1.3 h were obtained. K was then modelled as a linear function of variables made up from flow, water temperature and suspended particulate matter (SPM). The set of significant co-variables did not include light indicators. E. coli decay is inversely related to the river flow and it becomes highly significant below 0.3 m3 s(-1). The positive effect of small flows on die-off is increased by water temperature over 15 degrees C, whereas it could be reduced by SPM. The major co-variable of the model (p < 10(-9)) is an empiric composite variable integrating the effect of flow and temperature that explains more than 40% of the variance of K. We interpreted this as an expression of predation by benthic micro-grazers which could be the main cause of E. coli die-off in small streams in temperate countries.

Statistical models predicting embryo survival to term in cattle after embryo transfer.

Embryo survival to term in recipient cattle is highly variable. We examined calving data in the published literature to determine whether a model of binomial independence or a model which includes an embryo (e) and recipient term (r), adequately explain observed embryo survival rates following attempts to induce twin calving using transfer of two embryos. To achieve this we examined 32 published papers which provided us with 47 sets of data concerning 4560 recipients with either 0, 1 or 2 calves born. In each set of data, the observed embryo survival rate to term (p) (number of calves born/number of embryos) was calculated and the expected number of recipients with either 0, 1 or 2 calves born was determined, assuming a binomial distribution. Parameters for the second model were estimated using maximum-likelihood procedures. The model of embryo independence was rejected in 85% of the sets of data, suggesting that factors other than the embryo are important sources of variation in embryo survival or loss. The proposed e and r model of embryo survival adequately describes the published data in recipients receiving either single or twin embryos. In general, only 50-70% of embryos and recipients are sufficiently competent to result in a calving. Variation among laboratories producing either in vitro or in vivo derived embryos was due to variation in recipient and not embryo competence. It is argued that e rather than observed embryo survival rate, and r rather than observed pregnancy rate, should be used to compare differences among embryo treatments and groups of recipients, respectively. Acceptance of this proposition should permit faster progress in identifying the biology of superior embryos and recipients, which is a prerequisite to improving embryo survival rate in cattle. Collectively, the published data are not consistent with a model of embryo independence, and that a model of embryo survival to term which recognises recipient as well as embryo contributions to embryo survival may be more appropriate in cattle.

Statistical models for the twinning rate.

Linear regression models are used to explain the variations in the twinning rates. Data sets from different countries are analysed and maternal age, parity and marital status are the main regressors. The model building technique is also used in order to study the secular decline in the twinning rate. Linear regression technique makes it possible to compare the effect of different factors but the method requires sufficiently disaggregated data.
