[The pathogenesis of the convulsion syndrome in children].

The report contains some results of clinical, biochemical and EEG studies convened in 24 children with convulsive attacks and in 34 children with organic lesions of the CNS and epileptiform syndromes. The authors point out to the important role of the diencephalic area in the pathogenesis of convulsive syndromes. Changes in the glucocortical functions of the adrenal system during the period of convulsive attacks are related to a disturbed regulation in the hypothalamo-hypophysar structure. The processes of readaptation are more disturbed in patients with organic lesions of the CNS in frequent attacks. The results of such studies speak of certain indications to hormone therapy in repeated convulsions in children, especially if the convulsions have an epileptiform character and occur in patients with organic lesions of the CNS.

[Influence of lithium chloride on lipid metabolism].

Lithium chloride was injected subcutaneously to mice (in amounts of 500 and 300 mg/kg) once a day for 10 and 15 days, and to rabbits in single doses via a tube into the stomach (in amounts of 400 and 850 mg/kg). After different time intervals following a single or course-wise administration of the compound the level of total lipids was determined in the muscles and liver of the mice, and of the total lipids, beta-lipoproteins, phospholipids, cholesterol, fatty acids and 11-oxycorticosteroids levels in the blood serum of rabbits and of the bile acids content in the vesical bile of these animals. Hyperlipemia that developed under the effect of lithium was caused by mobilization of fat from fat depots and by deranged interstitial lipids metabolism.

[Changes in the functional state and structure of the adrenals in CC14 poisoning].

Introduction of CCI4 in doses of 0.1 and 0.2 ml/100 g to albino rats reduced the steroid production generated by adrenal sections. In 24 and 48 hours after poisoning with a small dose of CCI4 (0.1 ml/100 g) there could be seen an increased concentration of 11-oxycorticosteroids in the plasma. Morphological signs of a damage suffered by the gland were observed only in poisoning with a large dose of CCI4 (0.2 ml/100 g).

[Mechanisms of seasonal changes in the circadian corticosteroid function of rats].

Data are presented concerning seasonal changes in the circadian 11-OCS rhythm in the adrenal glands in the plasma of rats. For the purpose of studying the mechanisms of control of circadian 11-OCS rhythms during the spring and autumn seasons there were studied circadian corticosteroid reactions to ACTH and stress. The "Cosinor" method of study was used for analysis of the real circadian rhythm. The data obtained permit to suppose that in autumn the rhythm of the adrenal glands was associated with the circadian rhythm of the central links of the hypothalamo-hypophyseo-adrenal system, and during the spring season an important contribution in the formation of the circadian rhythm of the adrenocortical activity was brought by the adrenal mechanisms.

[General adaptation syndrome (Selye) in the calf. 5. Effect of increased glucocorticosteroid values on the phagocytosis activity of luekocytes, the function of RHS and the morphology of lymphatic organs].

Studies were conducted with the view to elucidating the correlations between increased glucocorticosteroid levels in the blood and the defense potential of calf organism against infectious diseases. The test animals were exposed to several substances (ACTH, cortisol, colibacteria, coliendotoxin), and even one to two days of increased 11-OHKS values were followed by marked decline in phagocytosis activity of leucocytes. In addition, RHS function was considerably reduced, after ten to thirteen days of application had elapsed, since at that point the disappearance of intravenously applied bacteria from circulating blood of test animals took place at rates which were much lower than those recorded from untreated calves. Differentiated length of stress or action (four to thirteen days) was followed by conspicuous changes in the lymphatic tissue of calf organism, with severe involution of thymus and follicular atrophy of intestine-associated lymphatic tissue having been the major findings. The results seem to suggest that rise in adrenocortical hormone level under stress may reduce potential organic defense to infection.

[Seasonal changes in the reaction of the hypophyseal-adrenal system to adrenomimetics in the suslik Citellus erythrogenys].

Studies have been made on the reaction of the hypophysial-adrenal system to the injection of adrenalin and novodrin to the ground squirrel C. erythrogenys at various seasons of year and at different functional conditions of the animals. Together with seasonal variations in the basal level of corticosteroids in the peripheral blood, seasonal changes in the reaction of non-hibernating animals to adrenomimetics were found. Stimulating effect of the adrenomimetics was higher at spring, immediately after awakening, being significantly lower in summer and being absent before the onset of hibernation. At the same time, the sensivity of the adrenal cortex to ACTH was relatively high. Presumably, seasonal changes in the reaction of the hypophysial-adrenal system in the ground squirrels to adrenomimetics are associated either with changes in the sensitivity of the adrenoreceptors, or with changes in the reactivity of the central part of the hypothalamo-hypophysial-adrenal system.

[Adrenal glucocorticoid function and cytoplasmic dehydrogenase activity in the presnece of mechanical and toxic liver damage].

Against the background of low steroid metabolism in the liver there was noted some decrease in the rate of corticosterone synthesis by the adrenal gland sections, and also, a decrease in the dehydrogenase activity in the cytoplasm of adrenal cells in male rats 48 hours after partial hepatectomy, as compared to the sham-operated animals. These changes resulted from suppression of the central mechanisms of stress realization due to the lowered steroid metabolism. Intraperitoneal administration of carbon tetrachloride (0.1 ml per 100 g of body weight) at the same periods led to a significant intensification of the steroidogenesis in the adrenal tissue and to the activation of NAD-dependent dehydrogenases in the cytoplasm. The role of toxic injury of the glands in the changes of the functional state of the adrenal cortex cells is discussed.

[Participation of histamine in activating the hypothalamo-hypophyseo-adrenal system during stress].

In 289 male rats, accumulation of histamine in diencephalon, augmentation of activity in the hypothalamus, and increase of the ACTH content in the hypophysis and 11-OCS in adrenal and plasma were revealed under a functional stress for the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal system (HHAS). Further accumulation of histamine was associated with increased secretion of CRF, ACTH, and 11-OCS. Blocking of histamine by diphenylhydramine hydrochloride (10.0 mg/kg i. p. -- 30 min before the experiment) depressed the rate and intensity of the initial reaction of HHAS activation.

[Influence of spontaneous arousal during hibernation of the activity of the pituitary-adrenal system in the suslik Citellus erythrogenis].

Periodic spontaneous arousals of ground squirrels during hibernation are accompanied by activation of the hypophyseal-adrenal system. However, together with a 3-fold increase in hypophyseal ACTH and 2-fold increase in 11-oxycorticosterioid secretion by the adrenals, more than 2-fold decrease in the content of these hormones in the peripheral blood was observed. The latter may result from the increased corticosteroid metabolism. It is suggested that spontaneous arousals may act as a synchronizer of endogenous rhythm of the activity of the hypophyseal-adrenal system during winter hibernation.

[Functions of the adrenal cortex in patients with supratentorial brain tumors and their prognostic value for surgical intervention].

The functional activity of the adrenal cortex was studied pre- and postoperatively in patients with pituitary adenomas, craiopharyngiomas and supratentorial meningiomas. With the hypothalamus function preserved, the patients developed varying degrees of stress-responses in the postoperative period. Severe morphological injuries to the hypothalamus make the normal response to surgical trauma impossible. With some functional centers preserved, the diencephalo-catabolic syndrome develops. Severe injuries of the diencephalon, with its adaptative function completely lost, result in the development of the diencephalic areactive syndrome.

[Role of hormones of neurohypophysis in ACTH and glucocorticoid secretion].

The absence of a strict relationship between the antidiuretic activity of the posterior lobe of the hypophysis and the ACTH-glucocorticoid secretion was shown in experiments on rats. A conclusion was drawn that the neurohypophysial hormones played no significant role in the realization of the reaction of the hypophysioadrenal system to various actions, and could influence only the spontaneous level of the ACTH-glucocorticoid secretion.

[Studies on gamma-oryzanol. III. Influence of gamma-oryzanol on circadian rhythms of serum gastrin, 11-OHCS and gastric secretion in rats (author's transl)].

In the course of investigations of gamma-oryzanol in rats, circadian rhythms in antiulcerogenic action on gamma-oryzanol were observed. Circadian rhythms in several other parameters were investigated and correlated with the antiulcerogenic action. Pretreatment of rats with gamma-oryzanol 100 mg/kg, s.c., for 5 days tended to decrease serum gastrin levels and gastric secretion, and to increase serum 11-OHCS. Suppresive patterns of serum gastrin and gastric secretion following the pretreatment with gamma-oryzanol corresponded to the circadian rhythms in antiulcerogenic action of gamma-oryzanol. A complication of our results suggests that increment of catecholamines in rat brain after gamma-oryzanol plays a role in the above mentioned actions.

Tryptophan metabolism in baboons: effect of riboflavin and pyridoxine deficiency.

Seven urinary metabolites of tryptophan-kynurenine pathway were measured in riboflavin-deficient, pyridoxine-deficient, pair-fed and natural diet baboons. The most significant changes in the pyridoxine-deficient baboons was a mean sevenfold increase in the excretion of xanthurenic acid and a threefold decrease in 3-hydroxy anthranilic acid. The riboflavin-deficient baboons showed a twelvefold increase in the excretion of anthranilic acid, and a tenfold decrease in 3-hydroxy kynurenine. Red blood-cell pyridine nucleotides decreased only in the pyridoxine-deficient baboons, while plasma 11-hydroxy corticosteroids increased only in the riboflavin-deficient baboons. These results are discussed in relation to enzymatic changes that may be expected during these deficiencies.

[Structuro-metabolic mechanisms for integrating several endocrine organs].

Mechanisms of integration in the neuroendocrine system in the regimens of physiological rhythm (oestral cycle) and of isolated effect upon one link of the system (metapyrone administration) were studied with the aid of qualitative histoenzymological analysis of adenohypohysis and adrenal cortex, estimating the comoplex reorganization of various structural components of adenohypophysis and adrenal cortex in response to specific depression of glycocorticoid synthesis. The role of the so called unspecific reorganization in the maintenance of functional response to isolated effects upon certain endocrine functions is discussed along with the necessity of further studies on the principles of interaction in the endocrine system using morphofunctional analysis.
