The percepts of electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve can best be determined in man. An eight channel bipolar electrode array has been developed which allows discreet stimulation of segments of auditory nerve via the scala tympani. In addition, a programmable stimulator has been developed which allows the delivery of different waveforms and stimulus patterns. Hopefully this will begin to allow the generation of the elements of speech.

Tests of central auditory function were performed variously on 64 patients with hemiplegia who had suffered a single stroke but with minimal or no aphasia symptoms and with essentially normal hearing. Both right and left hemisphere lesions were represented for comparison of effects on the tests. Reports of central auditory dysfunction generally assume localization in the temporal lobes. Since it was apparent that our tests were revealing positive findings in patients in whom there was no recognized evidence of temporal lobe involvement we deliberately selected for one study 34 patients without clinical signs of such lesions. The tests required selective listening in which patients had to a) perceive and repeat a prime message in the presence of a simultaneously competing meaningful message, either under earphones or in the sound field (loudspeaker), and b) repeat all words in a classic dichotic listening task. The tests reveal different dysfunctions in right vs left hemisphere damage and document that compensatory transfer of function from the usually dominant left side to the fight hemisphere usually occurs only in young children. The dysfunctions appear to be unrelated to temporal lobe lesions.

Three experiments were performed to examine the reverberation cue to egocentric auditory distance and to determine the extent to which such a cue could provide 'absolute', as contrasted with 'relative', information about distance. In experiment 1 independent groups of blindfolded observers (200 altogether) were presented with broadband noise from a speaker at one of five different distances (0.55 to 8 m) in a normal hard-walled room. Half of each group of observers were presented with the sound at 0 deg azimuth, followed (after a delay) by the identical sound at 90 deg azimuth. The order of presentation was reversed for the remaining observers. Perceived distance varied significantly as a function of the physical distance to the speaker, even for the first presentations. The change in the binaural information between the 0 deg and 90 deg presentations did not significantly modify the results. For both orientations, near distances were overestimated and far distances were underestimated. Experiment 2 and 3 were designed to evaluate how much prior auditory exposure to the laboratory environment was necessary. A 200 Hz square-wave signal was presented from one of three distances (1, 2, or 6 m) to observers who had either minimal room information or an exposure which included talking within the room. Perceived distance varied significantly with physical distance regardless to exposure condition.
