[A high level of alkaline phosphatase in the blood serum is not a contraindication to embolization of the hepatic artery in malignant neoplasms of the liver].

The paper discusses the experience gained with embolization of the hepatic artery performed in 7 patients showing blood alkaline phosphatase levels higher than 19.3 mmol/hr.1. Tumor accounted for 10-80% of liver volume. The procedure did not involve either complications or fatal outcomes. Remission was achieved in the majority of patients. It was inferred that alkaline phosphatase activity is not indicative of extent of liver involvement by tumor. High alkaline phosphatase level is not a contraindication for hepatic artery embolization.

[Blood count, leukocyte alkaline phosphatase activity, and blood sugar levels in Wistar rats as a function of the reaction type (level of higher nervous activity) of the animal].

The corpuscular blood composition, ALP activity and glucose level of 20 E+ and 20 E- adult male Wistar rats were measured without stress. We wanted to find differences due to the specific reaction type--emotive/non-emotive--of the animals. E+ animals had higher counts of small erythrocytes and a higher total number of leucocytes than E- rats. When the compositions of the blood of several inbred strains were compared, the composition of the red blood, total number of leucocytes and lymphocytes of E- -Wistar rats and E- -Sprague-Dawley rats were most similar. Differences in the activity of the ALP and in the glucose levels we found are similar to those in literature on this topic. When measured in a condition of inactivity the lower glucose values of E+ Wistar rats correspond to the excretion of smaller amounts of urinary catecholamines. Our findings, as well as those mentioned in the literature, confirm the assumption that the reaction type--which corresponds to the type of higher nervous activity--influences all functions of the organism including the composition of the blood.

Distribution of alkaline phosphatase in the serum proteins in hypophosphatasia.

A patient with hypophosphatasia and her relatives, including an affected brother, were studied with regard to serum alkaline phosphatase levels, phosphoethanolamine excretion, leucocyte alkaline phosphatase, blood group genes, and alkaline phosphatase distribution in the serum protein fractions. The pattern of alkaline phosphatase distribution in the serum protein fractions was normal both in the clinically affected patients and in their relatives. Thus the electrophoretic mobility of serum alkaline phosphatases is not altered in hypophosphatasia. The mere presence of phosphoethanolamine in the urine was of no help in detecting heterozygotes for the hypophosphatasia gene(s), as this substance was also found in control urines.

[Isoenzymes of blood serum alkaline phosphatase under experimental cholemia].

The activity and isoenzymic spectrum of alkaline phosphatase of the blood serum and liver under cholemia caused by deoxycholic acid were compared in healthy animals and in animals with the affected liver. It is shown, that under conditions of the bile acids higher content in the organism due to deoxycholic acid, the total activity increases considerably and there appears an isoenzyme absent in the blood serum of healthy animals. Changes in the activity and isoenzymic spectrum of alkaline phosphatase under experimental cholemia developing against a background of the healthy and affected liver are characterized by certain peculiarities.

[Changes in the polymorphism of the blood serum alkaline phosphatase in chickens undergoing subacute lindane treatment].

Investigated were a total of 123 birds of the White Leghorn breed and 50 birds of the White Plymouth Rock breed. Preliminary studies were carried out on the LD50 amount of lindane (151 mg/kg body mass) with 6 groups of chickens. The birds were divided into 4 subgroups for each breed. The first subgroup was a control one and was not given lindane, and the remaining subgroups were offered the following amounts of lindane in the course of 5 successive days: II - 1/20 LD50 (7.6 mg/kg daily); III - 1/10 LD50 (15.1 mg/kg); and IV - 1/5 LD50 (30.2 mg/kg). Each single one of the test birds was treated individually by means of a rubber tube and a syringe with a pure substance of lindane dissolved in oil. The polymorphism of alkaline phosphatase in the blood plasms of chickens was determined through horizontal electrophoresis in starch gel after the method of Gahne [14]. It was found that at subacute treatment of the birds a drop off was observed of the S1 fraction, and, as a result, the frequence of the homozygotic alkaline-phosphatase phenotypes FF and SS rose, while that of FS1 and SS1 dropped. Subacute treatment with part of the birds led to the appearance of an additional fraction F1, which accompanied the SS, SS1, and SS2 phenotypes only. The changes that took place as a result of the subacute treatment were only phenotypic ones as the F1 and S1 fractions had no hereditary character.
