[Interdigital pilonidal sinus in barbers].

Three cases of barber's hair sinus of the hand are presented. The lesion is produced by the penetration of extraneous short hairs into the interdigital spaces of the hand. The hairs produce an inflammatory reaction and foreign body granuloma. The clinical picture is usually benign but can be complicated by repeated infection which may require surgery. The structure of the lesions varies from epithelial-lined tract, cyst with surrounding foreign body reaction, to fibrotic cicatricial tissue. The exact reasons for the lesion are not known, but several theories are offered. It is, however, clear that since the 1970's Italian barbers have changed their methods of cutting hair, using their hands more than the customary instruments, i.e., combs, brushes, etc. The authors discuss the occupational problems due to the complications of disabling lesions.

[Barber-Johnson analysis of bed utilization in hospital-based health care in the Croatian Republic during peace and war:1986-1991].

Intensity of bed utilization in Croatia's hospitals in the peace-time period 1986-90 and the war year of 1991 was evaluated. The study covered 32 general-and-teaching hospitals disposing with 21,300 beds in 1986-90 and 27 of these hospitals with 19.000 beds in 1991. Basic information derives from hospital's statistical reports analyses by the Barber-Johnson's technique. While length of stay was reduced in the 1986-90 period, average number of discharges and deaths per available beds increased (1986/26.1; 1990/26.9). In the peace year of 1990 the performances of 11 of the 32 hospitals grouped in a zone limited to 10.0-12.9 days for the length of stays and 1.1-2.5 days for turnover interval. In the war year of 1991 the performances of 10 of the 27 hospitals were grouped in a zone defined by 8.5-10.9 days for length of stay and by 3.1 and 6.2 days for turnover interval. The Barber-Johnson's analysis provides key information in the decision making about hospital beds utilization, as well as in the evaluation of such decisions.

[Interdigital pilonidal sinus ("barber's disease")--a rare occupational disease].

Barber's disease is produced by short hairs that penetrate the interdigital spaces of the hands. The following chronic inflammatory reaction causes fistulas or sinuses and cysts. We present the case of a patient with interdigital pilonidal sinuses of all web spaces in both hands. Such an extensive case of this occupational disease has so far not been reported.

Mortality of hematopoietic disorders and hair dye use among barbers.

A total of 8,316 barbers were followed up from 1976 to 1987 to examine the relations between hair dye use and deaths from hematopoietic disorders. The follow-up rate was about 95%. Three leukemia deaths and two malignant lymphoma deaths were observed in this cohort. The observed deaths were less than the expected number calculated from age- and sex-specific mortality of the general population in Japan (3.8 and 3.0, respectively). No deaths from aplastic anemia or the other hematopoietic disorders were observed.

Autosomal dominant inheritance of Barber-Say syndrome.

We report on a mother-to-son transmission of the Barber-Say syndrome, a finding that strongly supports dominant inheritance of this rare disorder. The characteristic facial changes, small ears, hirsutism, and redundant skin of our patients are consistent with the findings of five reported cases. The mother also had cleft palate and mild conductive hearing loss. Her son had a shawl scrotum, primary hypospadias, and mild hearing loss by report. The inheritance of this rare disorder has not been established. The parent-to-child transmission in this family suggests X-linked or autosomal dominant inheritance. The parents of the patient reported by Santana et al. [1993: Am. J. Med. Genet. 47:20-23] were consanguineous, suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance in other cases.

Hypertrichosis, atrophic skin, ectropion, and macrostomia (Barber-Say syndrome): report of a new case.

We report on a child, born to a consanguineous parents, who presented with a multiple congenital anomalies (MCA) pattern consisting of severe hypertrichosis, macrostomia, ectropion, and atrophic skin. To our knowledge this is the third case with this combination of defects. The two previous cases were reported by Barber et al. [Syndrome Identification VIII(1):6-9, 1982], and David et al. [Am J Med Genet 41:192-195, 1991].

Counterclockwise barber-pole sign on CT: SMA/SMV variance without midgut malrotation.

We report on a 10-year-old girl who presented with worsening pain and anorexia after blunt trauma to the abdomen. Contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen was performed, and a counterclockwise rotation of the superior mesenteric vein around the superior mesenteric artery was seen. An upper gastrointestinal (UGI) series with small-bowel follow-through demonstrated a normally located duodenal-jejunal junction. This is the first case report of a counterclockwise barber-pole sign seen by CT with UGI that was negative for malrotation or volvulus.

Monocular occlusion cues alter the influence of terminator motion in the barber pole phenomenon.

The influence of monocular occlusion cues on the perceived direction of motion of barber pole patterns is examined. Unlike previous studies that have emphasized the importance of binocular disparity, we find that monocular cues strongly influence the perceived motion direction and can even override binocular depth cues. The difference in motion bias for occluders with and without disparity cues is relatively small. Additionally, although 'T-junctions' aligned with occluders are particularly important, they are not strictly necessary for creating a change in motion perception. Finally, the amount of motion bias differs for several stimulus configurations, suggesting that the extrinsic/intrinsic classification of terminators is not all-or-none.

Marshall Barber and the century of microinjection: from cloning of bacteria to cloning of everything.

A hundred years ago, Dr. Marshall A. Barber proposed a new technique - the microinjection technique. He developed this method initially to clone bacteria and to confirm the germ theory of Koch and Pasteur. Later on, he refined his approach and was able to manipulate nuclei in protozoa and to implant bacteria into plant cells. Continuous improvement and adaptation of this method to new applications dramatically changed experimental embryology and cytology and led to the formation of several new scientific disciplines including animal cloning as one of its latest applications. Interestingly, microinjection originated as a method at the crossroad of bacteriology and plant biology, demonstrating once again the unforeseen impact that basic research in an unrelated field can have on the development of entirely different disciplines.

The perception of 3-D rotation from translating sine-wave lines: the reverse of the barber-pole illusion.

An ambiguous moving pattern which gives rise to the reverse of the barber-pole illusion is reported. When vertical sine-wave lines translate, vertically and endlessly, on a two-dimensional (2-D) plane, one can perceive rotating three-dimensional (3-D) helixes without the impression of translation. With a single sine-wave line, 3-D rotation was seen for about half the exposure period. With three sine-wave lines shifted in phase by 120 degrees, this illusion easily arose when one fixated a point near the endpoints of the lines, which moved horizontally and sinusoidally along the imaginary upper edge of the screen. When 3-D rotation was seen, the sine-wave lines which were intersecting on a 2-D display were perceptually decomposed into pairs of lines separated in depth. On fixating a point at the center of the figure, vertical translation was mainly seen. Foveal viewing of the horizontal sine movement of the endpoints of the lines produces the impression of 3-D rotation and the impression appears to provide some specific information towards solving the aperture problem and towards reconstructing the whole figure as such.

A spanish version of the barber suggestibility scale for the puerto rican population.

Currently in Puerto Rico, there are no reliable and valid instruments to assess hypnotic responsiveness. The most widely utilized scales have not been scientifically translated and adapted with Puerto Ricans. In the present study, the Barber Suggestibility Scale (BSS) was translated and adapted using back-translation and decentralization. The translated BSS (the ESB) was individually administered to Puerto Rican college students (N = 85). No significant differences were found among the mean scores for the current sample on the ESB and the 1965 sample on the BSS. Both samples had similar score distributions. The internal consistency of the ESB was adequate, and there were significant correlations among scale items and total scores. The authors conclude that the ESB is an adequate instrument to measure hypnotic response within the Puerto Rican population.

Rapid diagnosis of typhoid fever by detection of Barber protein and Vi antigen of Salmonella serotype typhi.

Co-agglutination (coagg) and latex agglutination (LA) tests were used for the detection of Salmonella serotype Typhi Vi and Barber protein (BP) antigens in sera from five groups of individuals (A-E). Group A consisted of 30 blood culture-positive cases of typhoid fever and group B consisted of 30 suspected cases of typhoid fever who had sterile blood cultures but positive Widal tests. Thirty cases of pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) were placed in group C, while group D consisted of 15 cases of septicaemia caused by organisms other than Salmonella serotype Typhi. Group E comprised 50 normal healthy individuals with no history of typhoid fever or TAB vaccination in the previous 5 years. The Vi-LA test performed best with 96.7% of group A sera and 90% of group B sera giving positive results. No false positive results and only 2.58% false negative results were obtained with this test. Considering patients with positive blood culture results or positive Widal tests as true positives, the sensitivities of the Vi-LA, BP-LA, Vi-coagg and BP-coagg tests were 93.3, 91.7, 83.3 and 86.7%, respectively. The specificities of these tests were 100, 98.5, 98.5 and 98.5%, respectively. It is suggested that the Vi-LA test can be used for the rapid and early diagnosis of typhoid fever.

The use of a foam anesthesia donut for the positioning of a patient in the barber chair position.

The foam anesthesia donut proves quite useful in the positioning of the patient in the barber chair position. By placing the donut on top of the patient's face, it protects the patient's eyes from trauma by the assistants holding retractors. The endotracheal tube also can be secured to the ring, protecting it from disconnection during surgery. The inner foam of the donut, which is removed when applying to the face, also can be used to pad the ulnar nerve at the elbow.

The biological assessment of flora and fauna as standards for changes in the near-shore ocean environment: a study of Barbers Point Harbor.

The biological assessments of the flora and fauna in the near-shore ocean environment, specifically Barbers Point Harbor (BPH), demonstrate the usefulness of these biological analyses for evaluation of the changes occurring following man-made excavation for expansion of the harbor. The study included identification and enumeration of macroalgae and dinoflagellates and analyses of herbivores and carnivores in four areas within the perimeter of the harbor and the north and south entrances into the harbor. Numbers of macroalgae varied between 1994 and 1999 surveys, with significant decrease in numbers in stations C, D and E. Stations A and B were similar between 1994 and 1999 with a slight increase in 1999. The significant differences were shown with the appearance of Gambierdiscus toxicus (G toxicus) in 1999 among the algae in stations A and B. Assessment of herbivores and carnivores with the immunological membrane immunobead assay using monoclonal antibody to ciguatoxin and related polyethers demonstrated an increase in fish toxicity among the herbivore from 1994-1999 (22% increase) with a decrease (22%) in non-toxic fish. This was also demonstrated in the carnivores, but to a lesser degree. It is suggested that the biological analyses of the flora and the fauna of the near-shore ocean environment are appropriate to assess the changes that occur from natural and man-made alterations.

Diversity of marine biotoxins in the near-shore ocean area: presence of a palytoxin-like entity at Barber's Point Harbor, Oahu.

The presence of palytoxin or palytoxin-like compounds in fish extracts has been presented in this study. The hemolytic assay with sheep erythrocytes demonstrated the occurrence of hemolytic factors in fish extracts of Hawaiian reef fish from Barber's Point, Oahu. The rabbit anti-palytoxin inhibition assay with fish extracts and sheep erythrocytes demonstrated that palytoxin or its congener contributed to the lysis of sheep erythrocytes. From these results, it was concluded that sheep erythrocyte hemolysis was caused by palytoxin or palytoxin-like factors present in the fish extracts. Moderate correlation (R2) between mouse toxicity and sheep erythrocyte hemolysis was shown with 50 microg (R2 = 0.48) and 100 microg (R2 = 0.45) extracts. An inverse correlation of R2 = 0.64 was shown between hemolysis and MIA endpoint.

[Interdigital pilonidal sinus or barber's disease].

A case of barbers disease is presented. The pathogenesis, clinical course and therapy is reviewed. This rare occupational disease must be regarded separate from the postnatal sinus pilonidalis. Therefore the authors suggest a revalorization of the distinguishing name of fistula interdigitalis crinogenita given by G. J. N. Vleugels Schutter in 1963.
