Ferric sulphate and formocresol in pulpotomy of primary molars: long term follow-up study.

AIM: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of ferric sulphate (FS) to that of the full strength of formocresol (Buckley's formula) (FC) as pulpotomy agents in primary human molar teeth 42-48 months after treatment. This was to assess the succeeding premolar teeth for decalcification, abnormal morphology or any other defect. METHODS: Seventy children, ranging in age from 3 to 6 years, mean 4.3 years, were treated for pulpotomy of primary molars. Ferric sulphate 15.5% solution (applied for 15 seconds for 84 teeth) and formocresol solution (5 minutes procedure for next the 80 teeth) were used as pulpotomy agents. In both groups, pulp stumps were covered with zinc oxide eugenol paste. Permanent restorations were, in most cases, stainless steel crowns and in some of them amalgams. Follow-up clinical assessments were every 3 months and the radiographic follow-up time was 6, 20 and 42-48 months after treatment. STATISTICS: The differences were statistically analyzed using the Chi square test. RESULTS: These revealed 96.4% clinical success rate in the FS and 97.5% in the FC groups. Radiographic success rate in the FS group was 92.0%, while 94.6% in the FC group. No statistical significant differences were found between the radiographic assessment of the two pulpotomy agents. CONCLUSION: Ferric sulphate showed similar clinical and radiographic success rate as a pulpotomy agent for primary molar teeth after long term evaluation period, compared with formocresol. Ferric sulphate, because of its lower toxicity, may become a replacement for formocresol in primary molar teeth.

Isolation and classification of anaerobic bacteria from pulp cavities of nonvital teeth in man.

The anaerobic microflora of infected pulp cavities and chronic periapical abscesses was studied. A total of 19 infected nonvital teeth were subjected to this study. The coronal surface was swabbed with 70% ethanol to remove debris and to disinfect. Material in root canal chamber was obtained by sterilized paper points and suspended in reduced transport fluid. The samples were dispersed, diluted, and inoculated on blood agar plates. Isolates were identified by colony characteristics and cellular morphology, fermentation, indole production, nitrate reduction, gelatin digestion, urease production, ability to grow aerobically, API 20A System, and API ZYM System. Anaerobic bacteria were found in 14 pulp cavities. Anaerobic gram-negative rods, Actinomyces species, and Propionibacterium species were predominant in the root canals. Mixed infection with anaerobes and facultative anaerobes were demonstrated in most of the pulpal cavities of nonvital teeth.

[Clinico statistical study of the dental education and dental care in the clinic of endodontics. 1. Endodontic therapy of pulpless teeth].

In this clinico statistical study we tried to evaluate the program of education and the dental care provided by the clinic of Endodontics of the Athens University Dental School. The material for this study was the data from 2726 pulpless teeth. The endodontic treatment was done by the students of the 5th year at the Department of Endodontics during the year 1983-1987. The statistical analysis of the material of all the cases was based on: the possibility of perfect obluration of the root canal and the existence of periapical lesions in relation to the teeth group, the jaw and the age of the patient. The evaluation of the results proved that the education and treatment were satisfactory in quantity and quality. It was also found that the success of the obturation depended on the teeth group and had nothing to do with age. It was also found that the biggest percentage of periapical lesions concerned the anterior teeth.

[Apexification during active orthodontic treatment].

An apexification procedure is performed on a maxillary left central incisor tooth of a fourteen years old girl who has chronic apical periodontitis and undergoing active orthodontic treatment. After a one-year clinical and radiological follow-up, formation of apical closure is observed. As a result, apexification can be suggested as a successful treatment procedure in such cases.

Pulp capping with hydroxyapatite ceramic in rat molars.

Direct pulp capping with a hydroxyapatite ceramic in rat molars induced the formation of reparative dentin in the exposure sites after 2 weeks. In addition, foci of acute and chronic pulpitis were detected. After 6-8 weeks of application of the material partial or total necrosis occurred. The use of hydroxyapatite as a possible pulp capping material is discussed.

[Huneke test in the stomatologic practice].

It is a report about the "Huneke-test" based on a 30 year old experience of researching disorders in the jaw region. 334 teeth of 134 patients were tested by giving round-injections with local anaesthetic. 91 patients had a positive test result and 71 ill patients became free from trouble in different parts of the body with these injections or extractions. First of all dead teeth with an unsuspicious X-ray diagnosis were found out as causes of the disorders by means of the "Huneke-test". Examples of certain cases underline the recommendation of this test to dental practices.

[Experimental studies on root canal fillings with addition of corticoids].

No clinical symptoms are usually produced by dental procedures utilizing endodontic medicines with corticoid additives. Root fillin pastes with corticoid are particularly deserving of attention. Whether the effect of such root filling pastes is limited to the apical tissue or whether endocrine reactions are also evoked was studied in animal experiments. The possibility of endocrine reactions cannot be definitely excluded. Given the possibility of such counter effects and their sequelae, the discussion of the indications and/or the counterindications for the use of root filling paste with corticoid additives for permanent treatment of root canals should in no way be considered concluded.
