The importance of catchment and lake processes in the phosphorus budget of a large lake.

Total phosphorus (P) river inputs and lake concentrations for the Neagh system in Northern Ireland are compared from the period 1974-1997. The main routes of P transfer between the lake water and the sediment are settlement of abiotic particles and planktonic diatoms, summer sediment release and re-sedimentation in the last months of the year. The annual river loading to the lake varied between 0.7 and 1.8 g P m(-2), and sediment release can be as much as 1.4 g P m(-2). A simple model evaluated the effect of sediment-water exchanges on the phosphorus available for spring phytoplankton growth. It showed that re-sedimentation of released P and washout over the winter greatly mitigated its effect. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the very large summer releases of sediment P were not related directly to the spring inputs from diatom settlement. No long-term trends in P release were seen.

An analysis of canine hair re-growth after clipping for a surgical procedure.

Hair growth and replacement have been studied extensively in humans, sheep and laboratory rodents, but in dogs and other mammalian species few studies have been published. The objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the time required for the hair to re-grow in dogs after clipping for a surgical procedure; (2) to define whether the season of the year influenced the period of time required for re-growth and; (3) to determine if season might influence the telogen: anagen ratio. Eleven Labrador retrievers were recruited during spring, 10 during summer, six during autumn and 10 during winter. Hairs re-grew to their preclipped length in 14.6 weeks, 14.5 weeks, 13.6 weeks and 15.4 weeks when shaved in the spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. The differences in these values were not significant suggesting that season has no effect on the rate of hair re-growth in Labrador retrievers housed indoors (P = 0.12). The mean values for the telogen: anagen ratio in each season were: 5.2 (spring), 6.1 (summer), 9.5 (autumn), and 5.3 (winter). The differences in these values also were not significant (P = 0.89). The percentage of hairs in telogen was over 80% in all four seasons.

Analysis of potential duplicates in barley gene bank collections using re-sampling of microsatellite data.

Redundant duplication among putative Nordic spring barley material held at 12 gene banks worldwide was studied using 35 microsatellite primer pairs covering the entire barley genome. These microsatellite markers revealed an average of 7.1 alleles per locus, and a range of 1 to 17 different alleles per locus. Similarity of accession name was initially used to partition the 174 repatriated accessions into 36 potential duplicate groups, and one group containing 36 apparently unique or unrelated accessions. This partitioning was efficient to produce a distribution of mainly small average genetic distances within potential duplicate groups compared to distances from the group of unique accessions. However, comparisons within potential duplicate groups still contained large genetic distances of the same size as distances between unique accessions indicating classification errors. A bootstrap approach based on re-sampling of both microsatellite markers and alleles within marker loci was used to test for homogeneity within potential duplicate groups. The test was used in each group for sequential elimination of accessions with a significantly large average genetic distance to identify a homogeneous group. Such genetically homogeneous groups of two or more accessions were identified in 22 among the 36 potential duplicate groups studied. Results from the genetic analysis of some potential duplicate groups supported previous conclusions based on passport data through inclusion of the historically most-original accession in the genetically homogeneous group. In other potential duplicate groups the apparently most-original accession according to passport data was not included in the homogeneous set of accessions, indicating that this most-original accession does not have duplicate accessions in the group. During the present study the largest average genetic distance accepted in any homogeneous group was smaller than the smallest distance declared significant in any group, with a threshold average genetic distance of approximately 0.14. The results are discussed with respect to the identification of duplicate accessions within potential duplicate groups, as well as the elimination of genetic off types in such groups. Furthermore, large barley gene bank collections may be screened for potential duplicates with genetic distances below the suggested threshold of 0.14.

The Seattle virus watch. V. Epidemiologic observations of rhinovirus infections, 1965-1969, in families with young children.

Rhinovirus (RV) infections in Seattle Virus Watch (VW) families (1965-1969) were monitored by screening respiratory specimens in WI-38 cell cultures and by homotypic neutralization tests on sera related to family episodes revealed by RV isolation. Temporally related illness in members not proven infected was also taken to indicate infection. RV isolates (including those from the New York VW, 1961-1965) were typed within the official 90-serotype frame. Typed isolates from New York (165 with 39 serotypes) and Seattle (456 with 59 serotypes) were compared with the Tecumseh Study to test the hypothesis that some serotypes are "common," persisting because of greater infectivity. Of 32 serotypes qualifying as "common" in at least 1 study, 4 were "common" in all 3 studies and 8 in 2 studies. The 23 "common" Seattle serotypes differed from the remaining 36 serotypes in being more infective and in their more frequent association with prolonged shedding. The New York and Seattle isolates together revealed an increase over time in the proportion not typable or of of higher numbered types, consistent with progressive shift in RV antigenic character. WI-38 isolates indicated spring peaks of RV all 4 years but a fall peak only in 1967. An even larger fall peak was seen when all specimens from September-November 1968 were re-examined in fetal tonsil diploid cells. Thus, both spring and fall peaks appear to describe RV seasonality. RV infections explained 16% of all reported respiratory illness (20% of upper respiratory), but RV-associated illness in young children, especially under 2 years, was more severe and almost twice as frequent as in adults. The age of introducers and the direct relation of family size to frequency of episodes indicate that community spread depends largely on preschool children, including infants. Within families, the secondary attack rate (SAR) was highest following paternal introduction and, for all introducers, the SAR varied inversely with age (mother excepted). RV shedding was observed most often (85% of specimens) from the day before to 6 days after illness onset but prolonged shedding was common (to 21 days in 20% and 28 days in 1.4% of infections). RV infectivity, reflected by SAR among nonimmunes, was highest for infants (78%) and, for all ages, was greater with ill than with well introducers (71% versus 27%). Immunogenicity of RV was poor (Seroresponse: 48% of shedders, 32% of nonshedding contacts) but varied greatly with serotype. Illness frequencies among non-immunes were 59% for all proven infections and 35% when infection was not shown..

An outbreak of multiply-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in the Grampian region of Scotland.

A predominantly hospital-based outbreak of multiply-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae capsular type K2 (MRK) expressing expanded spectrum betalactamase (ESBL) activity and fully sensitive only to the carbapenems and amikacin is described. The organism was isolated from 283 patients between March 1992 and September 1995. The outbreak started in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a major acute hospital and spread through surgical wards, a medical ward, a geriatric unit in a separate hospital and various other local hospitals. Environmental screening revealed extensive ward contamination. The decline of the outbreak after the spring of 1995 coincided with the re-emphasis of standard infection control procedures and the launch of a works programme aimed at addressing underlying sites of environmental contamination. Of the 283 cases, 166 (59.0%) were detected through a specially instigated case finding programme. The MRK caused 11 cases of septicaemia, two postoperative intra-abdominal abscesses, one case of postoperative meningitis, 102 cases of urinary tract infection and 28 wound infections and was isolated from the respiratory tracts of five patients with ventilator associated pneumonia. The difficulty in controlling the outbreak is ascribed to heavy environmental contamination, frequent inter- and intra-hospital patient transfers and prolonged carriage of the outbreak strain.

The effect of environmental factors on elastomeric chain and nickel titanium coil springs.

It is well known that elastomers exhibit viscoelasticity and as such have their mechanical properties modified by temperature. Nickel titanium archwires are also affected by temperature and have been modified with specific temperature related properties for clinical use. What is less well known is the effect that other environmental factors, such as food, might have on the force delivery properties of both elastomeric materials and nickel titanium coil springs used for space closure. For instance gross colour change in elastomeric chain is a common clinical finding in patients who consume spiced foods. The aim of this work was to determine the effect three common environmental factors namely, water, Coke, and turmeric solution have on elastomeric chain and nickel titanium coil springs. In addition, it was decided to re-examine the effect of temperature at 10, 22, and 37 degrees C on both these space closing materials. Unlike many previous investigations, the test specimens were held at a constant stretch throughout the test period, including during their transfer to the Instron Universal Testing machine for force measurement. Six force measurements were made over the first hour, then at 24 hours and 7 days. A control group of dry specimens, maintained at 22 degrees C, had additional measurements made weekly for a 4-week period. The results indicated that elastomeric chain was affected by all the test environments while nickel titanium springs were only affected by temperature.

Anxiety sensitivity as a predictor of the development of panic symptoms, panic attacks, and panic disorder: a prospective study.

The purpose of the study was to examine how anxiety sensitivity (AS) acts as a dispositional factor in the development of panic symptoms, panic attacks, and panic disorder. Between 1986 and 1988, data were collected from 505 undergraduates at an urban university. At Time 1, measures used were the ASI to assess AS, the trait scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T) to measure trait anxiety, and self-report questionnaires to measure personal and family history of panic and anxiety symptoms. During the Spring of 1999, 178 of these subjects were re-contacted, and information was gathered on subjects' subsequent development of panic symptoms, panic attacks, panic disorder, and trait anxiety (STAI-T). The ASI was the strongest predictor of the development of panic symptoms and panic attacks. After controlling for trait anxiety, the ASI was not predictive of the development of panic disorder.

Quantitative trait analysis of seed yield and other complex traits in hybrid spring rapeseed (Brassica napus L.): 2. Identification of alleles from unadapted germplasm.

Unadapted germplasm may contain alleles that could improve hybrid cultivars of spring oilseed Brassica napus. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping was used to identify potentially useful alleles from two unadapted germplasm sources, a Chinese winter cultivar and a re-synthesized B. napus, that increase seed yield when introgressed into a B. napus spring hybrid combination. Two populations of 160 doubled haploid (DH) lines were created from crosses between the unadapted germplasm source and a genetically engineered male-fertility restorer line (P1804). A genetically engineered male-sterile tester line was used to create hybrids with each DH line (testcrosses). The two DH line populations were evaluated in two environments and the two testcross populations were evaluated in three or four environments for seed yield and other agronomic traits. Several genomic regions were found in the two testcross populations which contained QTL for seed yield. The map positions of QTL for days to flowering and resistance to a bacterial leaf blight disease coincided with QTL for seed yield and other agronomic traits, suggesting the occurrence of pleiotropic or linked effects. For two hybrid seed yield QTL, the favorable alleles increasing seed yield originated from the unadapted parents, and one of these QTL was detected in multiple environments and in both populations. In this QTL region, a chromosome rearrangement was identified in P1804, which may have affected seed yield.

Documenting freedom from disease and re-establishing a free status after a breakdown. Rabies.

Rabies reappeared in Finland in the spring of 1988 after a 29-year absence. This time rabies occurred in sylvatic form and the major species involved was the raccoon dog. During the outbreak 1988-89 66 animals were diagnosed rabid. Vaccination of cats, cattle and horses was strongly recommended and vaccination of dogs was compulsory in the outbreak area. A field trial was started on oral immunisation of raccoon dogs and foxes against rabies using baits containing rabies vaccine strain. The outbreak area and a wide buffer zone were baited three times. Finland was declared free of rabies again in 1991. Oral vaccination campaign with vaccine baits has been organised along the south-eastern border once a year since the beginning of 90s. Continuous surveillance and epidemiological screening is necessary to detect any new outbreaks of rabies at an early stage.

[Observation of tympanosclerosis operation result].

OBJECTIVE: To assess effects of multi-technique operation for tympanosclerosis. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of 157 cases (167 ears)of tympanosclerosis (the cases with only tympanic membrane calcification were excluded) was undertaken. All patients received the multi-technique if needed: (1) Open the attic, mastoid antrum etc; (2) Rebuild scute with auto-bone or infill the mastoid cavity with auto bone pieces; (3) Preserve or reconstruct the ossicular chain; (4) Utilize the absorbable Merogel to prevent re-adhering; (5) Press prostheses with tympanic chorda nerve as a spring; (6) Clear out hyperplastic bone on facial canal with Er-laser or small chisel. Postoperative audiometric measurements were undertaken within one month. And the follow up audiometric measurements were performed at three months after surgery, and then every half or one year later again. The last evaluations were considered as the results of follow up (taking the average hearing threshold at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 kHz HL). RESULT: The mean air-bone gap (ABG) of 167 ears was (39.74 +/- 12.54) dB before operation, while it was elevated to (20.68 +/- 11.80)dB after operation (P < 0.01). Surgical treatment was found to be successful in seventy-one ears (42.5%) and effective in forty-eight ears (28.7%). The total effectiveness was 71.3% (119 ears). Followup result was (20.67 +/- 13.52) dB, compare with pre-operative hearing threshold (P < 0.01). However, it had no difference comparing with post-operative hearing threshold (P > 0.05). Of 96 ears which were followed up over 1 year, the average ABG was (21.94 +/- 11.16) dB comparing with that of the total 167 ears follow up result (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Using multi-technique can obtain better and consistent hearing results. Surgery for total ossicular chain fixation of tympanosclerosis is still difficult. Stapedectomy still needs to apply in tympanosclerosis cautiously.

Feline distal aortic thromboembolism: a review of 44 cases (1990-1998).

The clinical case records of 44 cats with distal aortic thromboembolism were reviewed. These detailed 49 separate episodes of thromboembolism. Of the 44 cats, 33 (75%) were neutered males, and 43 (98%) were domestic shorthairs. The mean age was 8.7 years (age range 2-16 years). Evidence of pre-existing heart disease had been noted in 23% of cases. Heart failure was a concurrent diagnosis in 51% of episodes and 36% of these cases survived their thromboembolic episodes. Overall, cats survived 39% of the episodes. Cats died during 28% of the episodes, while 33% of the episodes resulted in the cats being euthanased. The median survival time was 6 months. Seventeen per cent of cats on prophylactic aspirin therapy experienced an episode of re-embolisation. Forty-three per cent of episodes occurred in the spring.

The effect of a combined approach to schistosomiasis control on the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum in Xingzi of Poyang Lake area, China.

The impact of a combined approach to schistosomiasis control from 1987 to 1989 and mass chemotherapy from 1992 to 1994 was studied in a rural community in Xingzi county in the northwest corner of Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, China. Humans, cattle, buffalo and pigs were known potential reservoirs of Schistosoma japonicum. Transmission occurs during water contact on and around seasonally flooded marshes that are used for grazing, the harvesting of grass and fishing. Humans and livestock underwent yearly selective mass chemotherapy, and snails were eliminated through ploughing and compacting of the marshland in the spring of 1988. Transmission was monitored through the determination of annual re-infection rates in samples of the human population, the annual examination of piles of feces from animals and humans in the marshland, the annual collection and examination of intermediate snail hosts, and the exposure to potentially polluted water and subsequent examination of sentinel mice. Schistosomiasis prevalence among humans and animals declined sharply as soon as mass chemotherapy was implemented. Snail density decreased even before mollusc control was started, possibly indicating a high variability of this indicator. The infection rates of snails and sentinel mice reached zero after a single application of mollusc control. The results underline the importance of single infected water buffalo for the transmission of schistosomiasis. Since the impact stopped for two years (1990-1991), the schistosomiasis prevalence rose quickly. Mass chemotherapy was an effective means to curb the prevalence of schistosomiasis in this area, but the effects were only maintained for one or two years in the marsh zone.

Progesterone downregulates progesterone receptor, but not estrogen receptor, in the estrogen-primed oviduct of a turtle (Trachemys scripta).

Progesterone downregulates nuclear progesterone receptor (Rp) and estrogen receptor (Re) in the estrogen-primed mammalian uterus and chick oviduct. We sought to determine if this downregulation mechanism is operative in the turtle oviduct. Female turtles were primed for 4 days with 17-beta-estradiol, after which progesterone (5 mg) was administered by injection every 24 h. Re and Rp levels in progesterone-treated and control turtle oviducts were measured by [3H]steroid-binding assays (pyridoxal 5' phosphate method) at 12, 24, 48 and 72 hr after initial progesterone treatment. Serum progesterone levels of progesterone-treated turtles increased only slightly from 0 hr (0.3 ng/ml) to 12 hr (0.6 ng/ml) after progesterone administration, increased considerably by 24 hr (5.3 ng/ml), and remained elevated (6-8 ng/ml) through 72 hr. Cytosol and nuclear Rp levels of estrogen-primed turtle oviducts showed distinct seasonal variation, with Rp levels higher in spring and summer months than in winter months. There was no seasonal variation in Re levels. Both cytosol and nuclear Rp responded to progesterone treatment. Cytosol Rp levels of progesterone-treated oviducts were significantly reduced below control levels by 12 hr after progesterone administration and remained low through 72 hr. Nuclear Rp levels of progesterone-treated oviducts showed no change at 12 hr, increased at 24 hr and then dropped at 48 and 72 hr. However, progesterone did not downregulate Re in the turtle oviduct.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Contribution of the forelimbs and hindlimbs of the horse to mechanical energy changes in jumping.

The purpose of the present study was to gain more insight into the contribution of the forelimbs and hindlimbs of the horse to energy changes during the push-off for a jump. For this purpose, we collected kinematic data at 240 Hz from 23 5-year-old Warmbloods (average mass: 595 kg) performing free jumps over a 1.15 m high fence. From these data, we calculated the changes in mechanical energy and the changes in limb length and joint angles. The force carried by the forelimbs and the amount of energy stored was estimated from the distance between elbow and hoof, assuming that this part of the leg behaved as a linear spring. During the forelimb push, the total energy first decreased by 3.2 J kg(-1) and then increased again by 4.2 J kg(-1) to the end of the forelimb push. At the end of the forelimb push, the kinetic energy due to horizontal velocity of the centre of mass was 1.6 J kg(-1) less than at the start, while the effective energy (energy contributing to jump height) was 2.3 J kg(-1) greater. It was investigated to what extent these changes could involve passive spring-like behaviour of the forelimbs. The amount of energy stored and re-utilized in the distal tendons during the forelimb push was estimated to be on average 0.4 J kg(-1) in the trailing forelimb and 0.23 J kg(-1) in the leading forelimb. This means that a considerable amount of energy was first dissipated and subsequently regenerated by muscles, with triceps brachii probably being the most important contributor. During the hindlimb push, the muscles of the leg were primarily producing energy. The total increase in energy was 2.5 J kg(-1) and the peak power output amounted to 71 W kg(-1).

Persistence and performance of esfenvalerate residues on broccoli.

The efficacy of esfenvalerate (84 g litre-1 EC; Asana XL) at 7.0 g AI ha-1 on broccoli was tested against the flea beetle, Phyllotreta cruciferae Goeze (Chrysomelidae: Coleoptera) and the imported cabbage worm, Pieris rapae L (Pieridae: Lepidoptera) under field conditions. Insect populations were monitored before and after treatment. Periodic sweep-net collections and examination of the leaves in treated and untreated broccoli plots revealed mean reductions of P cruciferae levels of nearly 98% 1 week post-application compared with untreated plots. The residual toxicity of esfenvalerate was also effective for 2 weeks in reducing population density of P rapae by 69% on broccoli leaves. The impact of esfenvalerate on feeding damage to broccoli leaves was established by counting the number of feeding holes made by P cruciferae on spring broccoli and P rapae on fall broccoli. As the leaf area ingested increased, a linear relationship was seen between the number of holes and number of insects. Results indicated that forage destruction by the two pests was significantly reduced by esfenvalerate application. Esfenvalerate was extracted from broccoli at 1 h and 1, 3, 7, 10, and 14 days post-application for residue analysis. Residues on spring broccoli were 12.2, 5.2 and 2.9 micrograms cm-2 on the leaves and 0.13, 0.05 and 0.02 microgram g-1 on the heads at 1 h, 1 and 3 days, respectively. Only trace levels (0.001 microgram g-1) were detected in/on the heads 14 days after spraying. On the basis of half-life (T1/2) values, persistence of esfenvalerate on spring broccoli leaves (T1/2 = 1 day) was shorter than on fall broccoli (T1/2 = 1.6 days). T1/2 values were 2.1 and 3.6 days on spring and fall broccoli heads, respectively. The implications of these residue levels on re-entry times into treated fields are discussed.

Genomic introgressions from wild relatives in the wheat genome alter meiotic dynamics in inter-varietal hybrids.

The use of wild relatives to introduce original diversity in the genome of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is an interesting approach to face the challenges of sustainable agriculture and the impact of climate change on wheat production. However, the influence of these wild-species introgressions on meiosis in inter-varietal wheat hybrids remains poorly understood. We analyzed the French wheat variety Renan (Re) carrying Aegilops ventricosa (Aev)-derived 2AS/2NS and 7DL/7DvL introgressions, the reference cultivar Chinese Spring (CS), which lacks these introgressions, and their inter-varietal hybrid Chinese Spring × Renan (CSRe). This analysis combined cytogenetic approaches with the assessment of reproductive performance. Furthermore, we generated a cytological atlas of meiosis in wild tetraploid Aev, quantifying bivalent configurations and chiasma frequency. We observed a reduced pollen viability and a slight decrease in floret fertility in the hybrid CSRe. Exploration of the meiotic behavior showed that CSRe exhibited increased numbers of rod bivalents and univalents, leading to a reduced average chiasma number and frequent chromosome bridges and fragmentations, whereas the parental lines maintained stable chromosome pairing. These rearrangements indicate that homologous chromosome pairing and recombination are affected in CSRe. We applied introgression-specific oligo-Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization to localize alien segments in CSRe, providing a novel strategy to investigate the meiotic behavior of introgressed regions. The 2AS/2NS introgressed segments in CSRe were frequently located on rod bivalents or univalents, while 7DL/7DvL segments consistently formed ring bivalents. Our results provide a foundation for guiding alien gene introgression and for understanding the behavior of chromosomes with introgressions in the wheat genome.

[Dictyocaulus viviparus in Denmark. A survey of 15 years' diagnostic examination of faeces samples (author's transl)].

On the basis of routine diagnostic examinations of 12424 bovine faeces samples for larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus, performed during the period 1963 through 1977, some calculations and reflections have been made on the incidence and epidemiology of lungworm infection in cattle in Denmark. It seems justified to conclude that dictyocaulosis is an important disease in heifers and cows as well as in calves. A distinct seasonal variation in the incidence of lungworm infection is apparent, in that more than 85% of the faeces samples were submitted within the period July through October. Lungworm larvae could be demonstrated in faeces samples from cattle during the winter and spring- This is considered to be of great importance with a view to re-establishment of the infection in the following grazing season. Overwintering of larvae on pastures seems possible. too, since patent infections among calves were demonstrated already in May and June. A comparison of meteorological data with totals of samples submitted and with relative numbers of positive samples seems to confirm, that both the level and the spread of lungworm infections are influenced by the amount of rainfall during the period June through August.

Regulation of frost resistance during cold de-acclimation and re-acclimation in oilseed rape. A possible role of PSII redox state.

A possible role of photosynthetic apparatus during cold de-acclimation was studied in oilseed rape (Brassica napus var. oleifera). Plants of spring (Star) and winter (Górczañski) cultivars were cold acclimated at + 5 degrees C, and de-acclimated during 4 weeks at combinations of + 12 and + 20 degrees C operating in the light or/and dark, with a 12-h photoperiod. Evidence is presented that the photosynthetic apparatus may be involved in temperature perception during de-acclimation. De-acclimation was faster under a 20/12 degrees C (day/night) treatment than under the reverse 12/20 degrees C (day/night). De-acclimation rate was constant when the day temperature was constant, irrespective of the night temperature both under cold day temperature regimes (12/20, 12/12 degrees C (day/night) and warm-day treatments (20/12, 20/20 degrees C (day/night). The fast decrease in frost resistance observed under warm-day de-acclimation was always accompanied by an acceleration of elongation growth. In the spring cultivar, elongation growth increased starting from the second week of de-acclimation, regardless of temperature conditions. Once elongation growth had commenced during de-acclimation, it continued throughout the period necessary for re-acclimation to low temperature. Re-acclimation to the initial freezing tolerance level was only possible when plant elongation was reduced. In addition re-acclimation of the photosynthetic apparatus to low temperature was impossible in fast growing plants. A possible relationship between PSII, growth rate and frost resistance during cold acclimation and de-acclimation is discussed.
