[Childhood diseases and pediatrics in the notebooks of Constantijn Huygens (1595-1687)].

In this article we collected and commented on the passages referring to children's diseases and paediatrics in the notebooks of the well-known Dutch statesman and poet Constantijn Huygens. This remarkable source for the history of paediatrics describes the psychological and physical development of Huygen's five children and the diseases with which they were afflicted.

Uchimata: a toolkit for visualization of 3D genome structures on the web and in computational notebooks.

SUMMARY: Uchimata is a toolkit for visualization of 3D structures of genomes. It consists of two packages: a Javascript library facilitating the rendering of 3D models of genomes, and a Python widget for visualization in Jupyter Notebooks. Main features include an expressive way to specify visual encodings, and filtering of 3D genome structures based on genomic semantics and spatial aspects. Uchimata is designed to be highly integratable with biological tooling available in Python. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: Uchimata is released under the MIT License. The Javascript library is available on NPM, while the widget is available as a Python package hosted on PyPI. The source code for both is available publicly on Github (https://github.com/hms-dbmi/uchimata and https://github.com/hms-dbmi/uchimata-py). The documentation with examples is hosted at https://hms-dbmi.github.io/uchimata/. CONTACT: david_kouril@hms.harvard.edu or nils@hms.harvard.edu.

Communication of the monitoring and evaluation process through the use of storyboards and story notebooks.

In preparation for the 1993 Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) survey, Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital Nursing Service was faced with determining the best approach to presenting their Total Quality Improvement/Total Quality Management (TQI/TQM) process. Nursing Service management and staff, Quality Improvement Clinicians, and medical staff used the Storyboard concept and the accompanying Story Notebooks to organize and to communicate their TQI/TQM process and findings. This concept was extremely beneficial, enabling staff to successfully present the multidisciplinary TQI/TQM data to the JCAHO surveyors.

Asthma outpatient education by multiple implementation strategy. Outcome of a programme using a personal notebook.

More than 10 years after publication, international guidelines remain poorly implemented. To better implement them, we need to develop new strategies adapted to the expectations of patients and health professionals outside hospital settings and to ensure better outpatient follow up in the community. We developed a bilingual education programme including a brochure designed to support an interdisciplinary health care network and measured hospitalisations (H), work absenteeism (WA), emergency visits (EV), asthma medication (AM) and quality of life (QL Juniper) before and 12 months after the intervention. All QL scores improved significantly in comparison with pre-intervention values. Health service use decreased dramatically when comparing the 12 months prior to and after the intervention(H: 35-8%, WA: 39-14%, EV: 88-53%). The final cost/benefit ratio of the programme was 1.96. Interdisciplinary implementation strategy of patient education is cost-effective, improves quality of life for asthmatics, and reduces strain on health services. Such a health care network does not require an expensive infrastructure and is better adapted to the reality and competences of clinical practice.
