An American Board of Orthodontics case report: the nonsurgical orthodontic correction of a Class III malocclusion.

A case report about the orthodontic treatment of a Class III malocclusion in a black man 22 years 8 months old. The patient's chief complaint concerned the space left by the traumatic loss of the maxillary left central incisor. Not desiring changes in facial appearance, the patient sought an orthodontic solution to his problem. An acceptable result was achieved through maxillary expansion and the reduction of mandibular space. [This case was presented to the American Board of Orthodontics in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the certification process conducted by the Board.]

Surgical-orthodontic correction of adult facial deformities.

The use of combined surgical-orthodontic therapy for the correction of skeletal anomalies has moved from the obscure to the routine over the last 25 years. Its use has been extended to treat not only developmental problems in children and adolescents, but also traumatic and temporomandibular joint-related deformities in adults. Its use can be integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan, including prosthodontics, periodontics, and implant dentistry. The advent of rigid internal fixation has made it particularly more appealing for the treatment of adult patients, allowing the patients to return to normal daily activities more rapidly.

Biomechanics of orthodontic correction of dental asymmetries.

Correction of dental asymmetries requires special attention in orthodontic treatment. Several types of asymmetries are described, along with the biomechanics needed for correction. Treatment with different appliance designs that correct these asymmetries with the lowest level of negative contribution from side effects will be compared with conventional treatment.
