The value of the use of safety restraints for all vehicle occupants has been recognized, and corresponding legislation has been implemented in Australia. However, legislation alone has not been sufficient to increase significantly the use of safety restraints for infants. In an attempt to address this issue, a statewide infant safety restraint loan scheme has been in operation in Victoria since May 1985. At the time of this study, 203 of 210 municipalities in Victoria were participating in the scheme. An operational evaluation of the Bassinet Loan Scheme (BLS) was undertaken after 18 months of operation. Questionnaires were completed by 426 parents attending selected maternal and child health centres. The questionnaire was designed to provide information about the use of safety restraint for infants aged 0-6 months, parental attitudes towards the restraint, and sociodemographic characteristics. The study demonstrated that 81% of the population surveyed used the infant safety restraint, but only 52% were in the BLS. The pattern of usage of safety restraints for infants was related to maternal age and educational level.
Peer education is an important part of health education programs. In smoking prevention programs, peer leaders are particularly efficacious. Yet, research on peer leaders' perceptions of these programs is minimal. This study assessed the perceptions of elected peer leaders (N = 207) in one seventh grade smoking prevention program and one chemical abuse prevention program in spring 1984. Peer leaders' assessments of the adequacy of their training, the programs' components, the programs' influence on their behavior and attitudes, and the efficacy of the programs were analyzed. Differences between genders and the level of peer leader enthusiasm also were assessed. Further research with peer leaders is suggested as a way to strengthen ongoing health promotion efforts.
A random mailed survey (response N = 226; 75.3%) of participants in diet-related home-based learning evaluated exposure to recruitment channels and impact on salience, utility, level of participation, sharing the course with others, knowledge, and performing recommended behaviors. A post-only design, the study was conducted in a small Minnesota city (population = 20,000), part of the Cancer and Diet Intervention (CANDI) project. About 18.5% of residents (3,711) enrolled during an 8-week media campaign; women, college graduates, and those over 44 years old were overrepresented. Participants learned about the program through mass media (97%); small media (41.9%); and interpersonal sources (50%). Women were more likely to learn about the course through interpersonal sources. In analysis of variance (ANOVA) modeling, salience and utility predicted level of participation in course activities. Level of participation in turn predicted nutrition knowledge and with salience predicted performance of recommended behaviors. Although the course appealed to individuals who needed it less, there was evidence of diffusion to the unenrolled. About 57% of responding participants reported sharing it with spouses; about 67% reported sharing it with someone outside their households.
