[Cobalt radioisotope teletherapy of patients with metastases to the brain].

The results are presented of palliative telecobaltotherapy in patients with metastases to the brain. The patients received a dose of 30 Gy in 10 fractions during 2 weeks. Clinical improvement was achieved in 28 out of 33 treated patients (85%). The survival time after the completion of radiotherapy was from 1 to 15 months, mean 5 months.

[Determination of the field length in planning radioisotope teletherapy].

The authors present a method for the determination of irradiation field length in the planning of gamma-beam therapy based on the use of decrement lines and decrement surfaces for describing dose distributions. For a case of rotation and static multifield irradiation from open fields when central beam rays lie in the same plane and are crossed at the same point, data of the atlas of dose distributions for single fields were used to make correlation between field length and target sizes in a varied preset degree of dose distribution irregularity in the target volume and under various conditions of irradiation.

[Results of tri-component treatment of lung cancer (pre- or postoperative radioisotope teletherapy and radioactive colloid gold Au-198)].

Radical surgery adjuvant to pre- or postoperative teleradiotherapy and intravenous injection of radioactive colloid gold did not aggravate the course of the postoperative period in pulmonary carcinoma patients, nor did it increase the total number of postoperative complications and the postoperative mortality. Side effects of treatment presenting as radiation responses were transitory and cured conservatively. Three-component treatment for pulmonary carcinoma, including preoperative irradiation in doses 20, 30 Gy, radical surgery, and intravenous 198Au after surgery is indicated to patients with Stage III pulmonary adenocarcinoma and epidermoid cancer, whose 5-year survival rate elevated by 36 and 30 percent, respectively, as against surgical treatment, and to those with stages II and III metastatic adenocarcinoma and epidermoid cancer of the lungs, whose 5-year survival rate increased by 39 and 32 percent, respectively, as against those treated surgically.

[Factors influencing the cosmetic outcome in early breast cancer patients following salvage surgery and radioisotope teletherapy].

It is the purpose of the report to analyze the factors exerting effect on the cosmetic outcome in breast cancer patients (I-II clinical stage), following organ-salvaging operation in conjunction with telegammatherapy. Assessment of the cosmetic results in 100 female patients with early mammary gland cancer is done 5 years after complex treatment (conservative surgery, postoperative radiotherapy, and chemo- and/or hormonotherapy when indicated). The influence of eight factors on the cosmetic outcome attained is evaluated through correlative statistical analysis, namely: breast size, scope of the surgical intervention, number of lymph nodes dissected, type of operative cicatrix, dose exposure of the entire mamma, homogeneity of radiation dose distribution in tre entire mammary gland, dose exposure of the tumor bed and adjuvant therapy. The analysis performed points to the important practical implications of three of the factors: size of operative intervention (axillary dissection range), breast volume and homogeneity of the irradiation dose in the entire breast.
