Forty-three cases of benign osteoblastic tumour of bone from the University of British Columbia bone tumour registry have been reviewed and reclassified according to the classification of Schajowicz and Lemos. Their classification has the advantage that the relationship of the two lesions is recognized and overlap, both radiologically and microscopically, is allowed for. The terminology used in the new classification, however, is cumbersome and confusing and appears to be of no great advantage. We therefore recommend instead the terminology modified from that of Dias and Frost, which incorporates the observations put forth by Schajowicz and Lemos: (a) cortical osteoblastoma, (b) medullary osteoblastoma, (c) periosteal osteoblastoma and (d) multifocal osteoblastoma.
The micromorphology, growth cycle, chemical composition of the cell walls, and the susceptibility to lysozyme and specific phages were studied with the culture of Actinomyces orientalis RIA-1074. It is seggested on the basis of these studied to transfer the culture from the Actinomyces genus to the Proactinomyces genus and to rename it Proactinomyces orientalis (Pittinger et Brigham) comb. nov.
The classical notion of neurosis as the prototypical form of nonpsychotic personality disturbance must be rejected in favor of the categories of (a) personality pattern disturbance and disorder of life style, and most especially, (b) character disorder. Category (a) would include schizoid, paranoid, and cyclothymic personality pattern disturbances and compulsive and hysteroid personality as disorders of life style. Each of these would occupy one end of a 'psychotoid' continuum, at the other end of which would be a familiar type of psychosis such as paranoid schizophrenia or pseudoneurotic schizophrenia. The most numerous of the nonpsychotic disturbances (in the tens of millions in the USA alone) come under category (b), the character disorders, involving a special sort of failure to inhibit impulse and unsocialized self-seeking. Character disorders are seen by us as turning on an eccentric axis, alternating between the two foci of 'dependency' and 'aggression'.

In vivo test for the susceptibility of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine was carried out in 390 patients. Parasite density was analysed by calculating the mean of each day's parasite count and the value was expressed per microliters of blood. Majority of sensitive and resistant infections attained minimal values on day 4. Further more, this value provides a clear-cut, statistically significant difference between sensitive and RI cases (Z = 2.14, P less than 0.05) RII, RIII cases (Z = 3.86, P less than 0.001). It is proposed that assessment of sensitivity should be based on D-4 parasite density per microliters of blood considering D-0 as base i.e., (proportionate reduction of parasite density on D-4 as compared to that on D-0) utilising the present criterion. In endemic areas, where reinfection is possible, patency on D-14 will nearly always be due to resistance. It is therefore, suggested that a better, more economical and an epidemiologically viable result can be obtained by extension of in vivo test upto D-14.
Malignant angioendotheliomatosis (MAE) is a lethal intravascular proliferation which has been thought to be of endothelial origin. In order to characterize its cellular nature, we studied 15 cases of MAE immunocytochemically, using antisera for factor VIII-related antigen, cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, vimentin, blood group isoantigens, thoracic duct lining cell antigens (TDLCA), common leukocyte antigen, and Ulex europaeus I lectin. In 14 of 15 cases, common leukocyte antigen was observed in malignant intravascular cells. Similar reactivity for factor VIII-related antigen was present in 14 cases, but was largely restricted to cells enmeshed in fibrin-platelet thrombi, and probably represents adsorption of platelet-derived factor VIII by tumor cells. All cases failed to bind Ulex europaeus lectin and lacked immunoreactivity for TDLCA, cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, and blood group isoantigens; two manifested positivity for vimentin. Immunofluorescent microscopy of frozen tissue in one case showed monoclonal IgM-kappa immunoglobulin on the surfaces of tumor cells. Electron-microscopic study of three cases disclosed a predominant cell type lacking features of epithelial or endothelial differentiation; a minor cell population displayed endothelial characteristics and was thought to be reactive. Four patients with typical MAE also had extravascular large-cell lymphoma in lymph nodes, spleen, adrenal glands, stomach, or soft tissues. Six patients showed clinical evidence of autoimmune disease. These results suggest that MAE displays lymphoid rather than endothelial differentiation.

The concordance rate for diagnoses of atomic bomb-related cases of leukemia in Nagasaki was determined using the French-American-British (FAB) classification for acute leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Two Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) hematologists and one of the members (JMB) of the FAB cooperative group reviewed independently the peripheral blood and/or bone marrow smears from 193 people with leukemia or a related disorder. There was 85% agreement in the identification of types and subtypes of acute leukemia. There was almost complete agreement for the diagnoses of non-FAB disorders (chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and others) resulting in overall concordance of 88.2%. The present study suggests that the previously established leukemia types for about a quarter of the cases of acute leukemia and related disorders except CML should be changed. Considerable numbers of cases of ATL and MDS were involved in this series. The frequency of the former disease was not high in the high-dose irradiated group, but that of the latter was considerably high. All subtypes of AML except M3 and M6 were present in the high-dose group. The striking difference in CML incidence between Nagasaki and Hiroshima may continue to be a problem in relation to biological response to radiation exposure.
The genomes of North American strains of leptospires belonging to serogroups Mini and Sejroe were analyzed and compared with those of reference strains by cleavage with restriction endonucleases. The isolates selected for this study, when typed by the serologic method, were identified as serovars szwajizak, hardjo, and balcanica. However, the results of restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) indicated that a different classification existed. The 2 isolates typed as serovar szwajizak seem to be georgia by REA. Isolates belonging to serovars balcanica and hardjo had REA patterns that differed from both reference strains. Differences were not observed in the REA patterns between balcanica and hardjo isolates. All hardjo and balcanica isolates examined are suggested to be classified into a previously described hardjo, REA subtype hardjobovis. Using the enzyme Hha1, these isolates were subdivided into 3 subgroups. When examining the REA pattern of the 17 reference strains in serogroup Sejroe, 3 identical pairs were observed: wolffi and roumanica; sejroe and polonica; and istrica and nyanza. The REA again indicated that it will be a valuable method for the classification of leptospires.

In the present study a re-classification of 96 lymphomas of the epipharynx and the mesopharynx including tonsils, paranasal sinuses and neck region was performed using the Kiel-classification. The histological criteria employed for this procedure were described briefly. 33 cases could be diagnosed as lymphomas of low grade malignancy, 50 cases belonged to the group of high grade malignancy and 13 cases remained unclassifiable. There was a light preponderance of male patients in the whole lymphoma group. The most frequent tumors were immunoblastic lymphomas, followed by immunocytomas, lymphoblastic lymphomas, centroblastic lymphomas, centroblastic/centrocytic and centrocytic lymphomas. Examples of transitions of one lymphoma type into another were demonstrated. The fact must be mentioned that lymphomas of the paranasal sinuses were nearly completely of the immunocytic or immunoblastic type.
Study of lipid and DNA, biochemical tests and phage typing performed on the strain PA previously labelled Mycobacterium phlei, lead to the conclusion that this strain belongs to the species M. smegmatis. Parallel studies performed on strain PN, isolated from a culture of strain PA, as well as DNA homology percentage of the two strains, do not support the assumption that strain PN could have resulted from a mutation of strain PA Strain PN produces mycolic acids similar to those found in Rhodococcus bronchialis; the few biological tests applied quite agree with such a classification.
