[Adrenal adenoma secreting exclusively estrogens in a woman during her reproductive period. 11-year follow-up].

Feminizing tumours are rare, most are malignant, and they are usually seen in children and male adults. We report an 11-year follow-up of a feminizing adrenal tumour which was unusual on three accounts: it was a benign adenoma, it secreted estrogens only and the patient was an female in her active reproductive years. To our knowledge, similar cases have not yet been published.

The effects of maternal drinking in the reproductive period: an epidemiologic review.

The major effects of maternal alcohol use during pregnancy are decreased fetal growth, morphologic abnormalities, and CNS impairment. If all three of these are present, with a characteristic facies in the infant, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is diagnosed. FAS occurs only with heavy or alcoholic drinking. The individual components of the syndrome exhibit a dose-response association with ethanol intake in many, but not all studies. Discrepancies in maternal drinking and pregnancy outcome reflect the myriad difficulties of these investigations. Drinking "before" pregnancy also has been linked to decrements in fetal development, possibly because before pregnancy may include the periconceptional period. However, women who are usually abstainers before pregnancy appear to have infants at higher risk of some adverse pregnancy outcomes than women who are light drinkers. Future studies need to construct careful drinking histories to address this and other questions that deal with parents' ethanol use and reproductive health.

[Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and analysis of specific immunoglobulins concentration in serum of women during the reproductive period in a sample of Włocławek population].

The aim of the study, from 1996 to 1999, was to investigate the serological course of prevalence Toxoplasma gondii in 985 women of procreation period. In non - pregnant women the incidence of Toxoplasma gondii specific IgG was significantly higher (59.0 +/- 1.9%) than in pregnant women (43.4 +/- 2.8%). Specific IgM was less frequent (from 1.47 +/- 1.02% to 1.76 +/- 0.66%).

Characterization of glycoconjugates in the endometrium of the miniature pig during different reproductive periods.

Lectin-binding glycoconjugates in the endometrium of miniature pigs were determined for sexually immature, dioestrus, oestrus and early pregnancy periods, using five horseradish peroxidase-labelled lectins. Apparent changes associated with sexual maturity were increases in binding intensity of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), Glycine max agglutinin (SBA) and Ulex europaeus agglutinin (UEA) and the appearance of Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA) binding. The binding intensity of WGA, SBA and UEA further increased at oestrus, particularly for UEA which showed a stage-specific binding on the surface of endometrial epithelium. Pregnancy-related changes included an increase in WGA binding and a decrease in UEA and RCA binding. The results indicate that stage-specific alterations in lectin binding glycoconjugates occur in the endometrium of pigs associated with sexual maturity and the reproductive cycle.

Health status of Mya arenaria bivalves collected from contaminated sites in Canada (Saguenay Fjord) and Denmark (Odense Fjord) during their reproductive period.

The purpose of this study was to examine the health status and gametogenetic activity in Mya arenaria clams collected at various sites in the St. Lawrence Estuary (Quebec, Canada) and in the Odense Fjord (Denmark). Clam soft tissues were analyzed for metals/metalloids and organotin compounds to confirm their exposure to these contaminants. Their health status was assessed by a test battery of biomarkers designed to measure the early biological effects of contaminants, which include expression of defence mechanisms such as xenobiotic conjugation (glutathione S-transferase), expression of stress proteins (i.e., heme oxygenase and metallothioneins), changes in gametogenetic activity, and individual morphometric characteristics. Clam tissues were also examined for the presence of oxidative damage to lipids, formation of DNA strand breaks, and alterations in heme metabolism. The results showed that clams sampled from sites with either ferry activity or intensive boat traffic in marinas were contaminated by metals/metalloids such as Ag, Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sn, V, and Zn. The clams also contained relatively high amounts of tributyltin (TBT) in their tissues (in the ng TBT/g range for both areas), with digestive glands containing more organotins than did gonadal tissues. Moreover, clams collected from TBT-contaminated sites had higher amounts of tin-heme adducts and lower total heme in their digestive glands. Condition factor, age distribution, and sex ratio were significantly altered in clams from impacted sites in the Saguenay Fjord and accompanied by an increased male/female sex ratio. Gametogenetic activity was also negatively affected, as revealed by reductions in gonadosomatic index, maturation index, aspartate transcarbamylase activity, and vitellogenin-like proteins. The Saguenay Fjord clams displayed a complex pattern of stress responses and damage such as increased heme oxygenase activity, phase 2 conjugation enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation, and altered DNA strand breaks. The integration of biomarker response data into a biomarker index at the whole-individual level (morphometric characteristics) and for various organs (gill, digestive gland, and gonad) revealed that, relative to the control site, morphological characteristics and gonadal activity were most affected at the most contaminated site, while the effects were more pronounced in the digestive gland and gill at moderately impacted sites. We conclude that the health status of M. arenaria clams at these contaminated sites is compromised, with obvious disruption of reproductive activity.

Neuroendocrine, behavioral, and morphological changes associated with the termination of the reproductive period in a natural population of male rough-skinned newts (Taricha granulosa).

Male rough-skinned newts (Taricha granulosa) were collected from the same natural population every second week from early April to mid-June. They were either field-tested for their sexual responsiveness or used to measure the plasma concentrations of androgens and corticosterone, the brain concentrations of immunoreactive (ir) gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and arginine vasotocin (AVT), and morphological parameters. During the experimental period, the percentage of sexually responsive males gradually declined from 100 to 4%, concurrent with a decrease of plasma concentrations of androgens, but not corticosterone. Concentrations of irGnRH in two brain regions (medial septum; ventral telencephalon containing the nervus terminalis) did not change significantly during this time. In the infundibulum, irGnRH concentrations increased from the end of May to mid-June, which coincided with an increase in plasma androgen concentrations, a marked increase in testis weights, and a decrease of the proportion of males with spermatozoa in their vas deferens. During this period, no changes in irAVT concentrations in four brain regions (infundibulum; pars distalis of the pituitary; interpeduncular nucleus; cerebrospinal fluid) were detected, but significant changes were observed for irAVT in the dorsal preoptic area that were not correlated with the seasonal changes in behavior. Also, during this period, there were decreases in mean body weight and tail height, and in the proportion of males with smooth skin and dark nuptial pads. These results are discussed in view of our current knowledge of the endocrine mechanisms that regulate sexual behaviors and secondary sex characteristics in male amphibians.

[Mutagenic effect of different types of irradiation on the sex cells of male mice. IX. Duration of preservation of radiation-induced reciprocal translocations during the course of the reproductive period].

The rate of induction of reciprocal translocations by gamma-irradiation of mouse spermatogonia was studied by cytological examination of descendent spermatocytes. The CBA mice were given a total single acute dose of 300 r or 3 times per 300 r with 7 and 28 days intervals. The irradiated mice were killed within 3,7 and 12 month after the irradiation. The frequency of translocations in 3 and 7 month after the treatment was the same. A 25% decrease in the yield of reciprocal translocations was observed in 12 months after the irradiation. It suggests that the genetic risk from ionizing radiation remains high a year after the irradiation.

[The prevention of the adhesive process after surgical interventions in gynecological patients in the reproductive period].

Dynamic laparoscopy making use of special tubes was carried out in 149 patients (30 with acute inflammatory diseases of the uterine tubes, 80 following reconstructive surgery on the tubes suffering from tuboperitoneal sterility, 9 operated on the internal genitals). Repeated laparoscopic examinations were carried out in the course of 14 days, every 2-3 days. The course of the postoperative period was assessed by the presence of adhesions, hyperemia, edema, and exudation. Adhesions were separated, during mixtures were delivered including antibiotics, corticosteroids, enzymes, rheopolygluquins; chromohydrotubations was carried out. Dynamic laparoscopy in patients with inflammatory diseases of the internal genitals helped detect positive results 2-3 days after intensive care was started and prevent adhesions. This method appears to be particularly valuable if used after inflammatory processes and interventions on the internal genitals in young, more so in nulliparous women planning to have children in future.
