[Alveolar soft tissue sarcoma].

An autopsy observation of alveolar soft tissue sarcoma of the left hip muscles in a man of 66 is described. Predominantly lymphogenic metastasizing of the alveolar sarcoma was observed and two hypes of tumour cells, "dark" and "light" were distinguished. PAS-positive substances, lipids and mucus were found in the cytoplasm of the "light" cells. Histogenetically, the alveolar soft tissue sarcoma is assumed to be close to striated muscles.

Atypical fibroxanthoma of the skin. A clinico-pathological study of 57 cases.

A retrospective study of 57 patients with atypical fibroxanthoma of the skin is presented. The light microscopy is described and the differential diagnosis is discussed. Most of the atypical fibroxanthomas (32 out of 57 cases) were originally diagnosed as soft tissue sarcomas, e.g. fibrosarcoma, dermatofibrosarcoma, neurofibrosarcoma, myosarcoma and unspecified sarcoma. The tumour occurred chiefly in middle-aged and elderly patients; three patients were 15 years old or younger. The median age was 73 years in patients in whom the tumour occurred in the head and neck, and 34 years in patients in whom the tumour developed on the extremities and trunk. The sex ratio (male to female) was almost equal. Follow-up information about 43 patients was available. The follow-up period ranged from 1 year to 25 years with a median of 9 years. Eight patients died from intercurrent disease; all the other 35 patients are alive and well. The clinical course was benign in all but one patient in whom a recurrence developed and metastases to the regional lymph nodes appeared 7 years after the initial excision. The tumour in this case did not differ histologically from the other atypical fibroxanthomas with respect to cellularity, cellular and nuclear atypia or mitotic activity. It is suggested that the recurrence per se might be of prognostic importance.

Low grade myofibroblastic sarcoma of tongue: a case report.

A case of a 24-year-old woman with a 6 weeks lasting nodule of the right margin of the tongue is described. The nodule was 20 mm in diameter and showed surface ulceration. The diagnosis of low grade myofibroblastic sarcoma was supported by histological, immunohistochemical and electronmicroscopic examination. Although the tumor resection was not complete, the patient is free of disease 1 year after operation. The differential diagnostics of low grade myofibroblastic sarcoma is discussed.

[Primary radiation therapy of sarcoma of the uterus (author's transl)].

We report 24 cases of sarcoma of the corpus uteri treated by sole irradiation. The 5-year-survival-rate was 20,8%. The prognosis seems to be poor in this group treated by sole irradiation. Only inoperable cases of sarcoma of the corpus uteri ought to be treated by radiotherapy alone.

[An electron-autoradiographic study of capillaries in malignant tumors].

Using electron microscopy the ultra structure of endothelial cells in malignant tumors (myogenic sarcomas), removed in 6 patients, was investigated. It was found that endothelial cells of blood capillaries in malignant neoplasms show some peculiar features in the basal layer structure and in formation of a multitude of orifices of various diameter in the capillary wall. Electron radiographic investigations of endothelial cells of a transplantable sarcoma strain in the experiment have evidenced a greater number of ribosomes in the cytoplasm and enhancement of the DNA synthesis in nuclei. These findings are indicative of increased proliferative properties of these cells.

[Treatment of soft tissue sarcomas of the leg].

An analysis of data of 548 patients with different diseases of soft tissues of lower extremities after using a complex of diagnostic measures (clinical, radionuclide data, thermography, puncture, biopsy) has shown that the number of erroneous conclusions may be minimized to 2%. Modern advances of plastic surgery can widen indications for preserving operations in malignant tumors of soft tissues of lower extremities without prejudice to the main principle of oncology concerning its fascial character. Combined treatment can also improve the results.

Effect of splenectomy on B- and T-lymphocytes and a benzpyrene-induced murine sarcoma.

UNLABELLED: The investigation of 400 adult mice had the objective to find out 1. The influence of splenectomy on genesis and growth of a benzpyrene-induced sarcoma and 2. The behavior of B- and T-lymphocytes under the influence of splenectomy. RESULTS: 1. A significantly lower number of tumors developed in splenectomized animals (28.5%) as compared to controls (49.5%). 2. A significant decrease of B-lymphocytes and an increase in T cells after splenectomy were found in the peripheral blood. 3. The examination of the tumor marginal zone showed a decreased number of B-lymphocytes and an increase of T-lymphocytes, while the total count of round cells remained unchanged. These results are discussed and compared with results of other authors.

Growth pattern and differentiation of human soft tissue sarcomas in nude mice.

Tumor suspensions prepared from 62 human soft tissue sarcomas were injected into the peritoneal cavity and subcutis of 124 nude mice. The sarcomas included were ten malignant fibrous histiocytomas, 15 fibrosarcomas, six tendosynovial sarcomas, five liposarcomas, nine myosarcomas, six angiosarcomas, six malignant schwannomas, and five miscellaneous sarcomas. Sixty-two percent of the sarcomas showed progressive growth in nude mice either subcutaneously (46%), intraperitoneally (14%), or at both sites (40%). Fifty-one percent of the primary sarcomas, 71% of the recurrent tumors, and 78% of the sarcomas that were metastatic grew in the animals. Sarcomas that were grafted into the subcutis appeared as solitary nodules and showed a more accelerated growth as well as better differentiation than those that were injected into the peritoneal cavity. The intraperitoneal tumors were multifocal and dedifferentiated growths. It appears that simultaneous subcutaneous and intraperitoneal grafting of human sarcomas into nude mice offers a model to study the histogenesis and morphologic variations of soft tissue sarcomas.
