Ninety-four patients sterilized by tubal occlusion were interviewed at the time of hospitalization for surgery and followed at scheduled intervals for a 2-year period. There were no serious problems, medical or psychologic, and all but 3 patients were pleased and satisfied at the end of 2 years. There were no technical failures. Psychosomatic symptoms do develop. They are more prominent and persist longer in the younger age group. Patients having these symptoms are those who had difficulty with contraceptive technics, have a limited understanding of the sterilization procedure, and continue to question its permanency. The need for preoperative evaluation and counseling is emphasized.
8 years after sterilization was in force in GDR it is stated, that this way of female healthy protection was different performed in the varions countries of GDR. The portion of the country Rostock amount to 56,6%. --85,3% of the women were elder than 30 years. 60% of the applicants have had legal abortions. 66,8% of the propositions were based by medical indication. --The rate of complications and failures amount to 0,3%. --By reason of the results it is recommended to regard the sterilization as the adequate method of contraception, if reproduction is finished.

The incidence of carbamazepine-associated behavioral side effects in 65 individuals with mental retardation and additional seizure and/or psychiatric or behavioral disorders was evaluated. We identified 6 patients (9.2%) who experienced medication side effects, ranging from irritability to mania. Four of the 20 patients (20%) who received carbamazepine purely for treatment of a behavioral or psychiatric disorder experienced medication side effects, whereas none of the 21 patients treated for an isolated seizure disorder experienced similar effects. This difference was statistically significant, p less than .05. The incidence of behavioral side effects of medication was not associated with age, sex, or serum carbamazepine level. The chemical structure and mechanism of carbamazepine use in various disease processes were discussed.
CNS therapy for childhood leukemia has adverse effects upon growth and cognition. The cause of these deficits is unknown. In a rat model, we determined which agent, or combination of agents, in CNS therapy affected growth. Young Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to cranial irradiation (1000 cGy), methotrexate (2 or 4 mg/kg, intraperitoneally), or prednisolone (18 or 36 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) alone or in two- or three-agent combinations. Matched control groups received appropriate sham radiation, intraperitoneal saline, or both. Body weight was recorded from 14 through 150 d of age. After the rats were killed at 150 d, body length was recorded and the head and left femur were removed to determine body and craniofacial proportions. Cranial irradiation alone, but not methotrexate or prednisolone alone, stunted growth permanently and altered craniofacial proportions. When these agents were combined, methotrexate and prednisolone modified the growth response to cranial irradiation. Methotrexate given before cranial irradiation prevented radiation stunting in males. This protection was lost when the dose of methotrexate was increased, when prednisolone was added to the combination, or when females were studied. The protection in males was effective against both growth and behavioral deficits. These results indicate that the physical and behavioral side effects of CNS therapy are better understood in the context of dose, sex, and interactions of the agents.
