Architects and non-architects made Semantic Differential ratings of colour samples (chips) and a simulated interior space (a model). In analyses of the total samples' ratings (architects and non-architects) of (a) colour chips and (b) models, and individual sample analyses, (c) architects' chip judgements, (d) architects' model judgements, (e) non-architects' chip judgements, and (f) non-architects' model judgements, five factors occurred, though not necessarily all in any one analysis. These were: (i) dynamism; (ii) spatial quality; (iii) emotional tone; (iv) evaluation; (v) complexity. Linear correlations between parameters of the Munsell Color System and the above factors in the various analyses were calculated, while parallel analyses were carried out employing a graphical technique described by Sivik (1974a) involving isosemantic maps. In all analyses, linear correlations between the colour parameters and judgements were found for the dynamism factor, spatial quality factor, and emotional tone factor. They were associated respectively with chroma, value, and hue. Inspection of the isosemantic maps indicated subsidiary effects of the non-dominant dimensions of a non-linear sort, though the maps also exhibited the linear relations. Linear correlations were low or non-existent for the evaluation and complexity factors, and the complex nature of their determinants was clear from the isosemantic maps. The dterminants of judgements were similar for architects and non-architects, with the exception of evaluative judgements for the models in which markedly different determinants were noted. Comparability of the present findings with other studies carried out in a variety of countries over a 20 year period was high for dynamism, spatial quality, and emotional tone, and it is suggested that there may be something inherent in the response to colour in relation to such judgements. Recent physiological work is discussed, and its limitations in terms of colours sampled and an overconcentration on the hue dimension noted. In contrast, it is suggested that dimensions of judgement, such as evaluation or complexity, reflect to a greater extent culture or training, and are hence independent of the basic colour attributes.
BACKGROUND: The interactions of individuals participating in space simulation studies can give us valuable information about ways that space crew members relate with one another. A promising method of investigating such interactions is based on the Kelly repertory grid technique. HYPOTHESES: We predicted that in a space simulation crew: 1) one's personal self-concept would become closer to concepts about other crew members in a cohesive crew, and vice-versa, and 2) the similarity of one's ego images in the past, present and future influences that person's position in the group. METHOD: Crews from two isolation studies lasting 135 and 90 days at the Institute for Biomedical Problems in Moscow were evaluated using a modification of the Kelly repertory grid technique. Members assessed each other on a monthly basis and during off-nominal simulated docking periods. RESULTS: During both isolations, crew members were unsuccessful in making their personal self-concepts move closer to their concepts about fellow crew members. Crew disintegration resulted, with one member becoming an outsider whose personality was characterized by a disintegrated ego-image and an infantile type of the present ego. CONCLUSIONS: In small isolated groups, failure to make personal self-concepts become more like concepts about other crew members can lead to group disintegration and tension and can result in the appearance of an outsider who has a disintegrated ego-image and an infantile present ego.
The experimental data on a structural-and-functional status of erythrocyte membranes in ground-based simulation of human extravehicular activity (EVA) are discussed. The changes in the structure and function of erythrocyte membrane were determined from the fixation of lipophilic ions, specific activity of ion-transporting adenosine triphosphatases and content of the products of peroxide oxidation of lipids (POL) in plasma. On exposure to hypobaric hyperoxia during real EVA the membrane status changes are associated with the activation of a cascade of POL processes.
The case presented is of a patient with an intervertebral disc space cyst producing recurrent radicular pain following microdiscectomy in the lumbar region. Difficulties with the preoperative diagnosis of this and other recurrent radicular syndromes are discussed, and a review of the relevant literature is presented.

During 120-day and 370 day hypokinesia the possibility has been shown of manifestation of mechanism of immunological regulation of osteoclast functions. Supernatants of mononuclear peripheral blood cells which were in vitro nitrogen-stimulated, had an increased potential for resorption in 45Ca-labelled mice fetus long bone organ cultures. Resorbing activity was increased in mononuclear supernatants from some of the subjects exposed to 120-day hypokinesia and from all subjects exposed to 370-day hypokinesia. This variable returned to base-line values after completion of the bed-rest period. Lymphocyte in vitro proliferative activity decreased at the end of hypokinesia and during the initial days of recovery, and the number of active T-rosetting cells was, on the contrary increased. This suggested a possible activation of part of immunocompetent cell population potentially producing humoral regulators of bone cell functions in vivo. A study of a group of healthy males performing their routine daily activity and of patients with local osteoporosis (paradontitis) showed significant differences between normal subjects and patients, confirming the informative value of the method used and allowed to establish approximate limits of physiological variations of the values.
The three Spacelab D-1 Scientist Astronauts were exposed to a 1 1/2 h 3 g centrifuge run in the supine position, resulting in a linear 3 g acceleration in the x-direction. They used their space experience to evaluate their readapting to normal gravity and compared their observations with 'Space Adaptation Syndrome'. After the centrifuge runs, the vestibular visual system appeared to be modified in a very specific and reproducible manner. Readapting to the normal 1 g environment took at least 6 h. During this period there was a striking similarity to the astronaut's experience during adaptation to weightlessness in space. A series of vestibular tests were then performed, confirming these subjective findings.

General practitioners and accident and emergency departments are often involved in the management of hand or finger sepsis. Such cases are usually easily diagnosed and treated. We report a more serious disorder which may mimic the condition and cause diagnostic confusion.
