Sources of information for occupational dermatology.

It is a virtual certainty that the dermatologist will be called upon routinely to evaluate illness caused by occupational factors. Unfortunately, few are prepared adequately during formal training to care for the worker-patient. Reliance on crisis-oriented treatment(s) is frequently insufficient to manage this type of skin disease. One remedy for this problem is simply to read the literature; even limited acquaintance with the occupational health literature should begin to clarify the unique aspects of diagnosis and treatment. Consulting a single occupational dermatology reference will often lead to critical insights about an industrial setting, extracutaneous disease manifestations, toxicology, and preventive methods. Perhaps less obvious, this knowledge is essential to recognize and effectively support claims for workers' compensation, claims that may be the only means of redress for the tragic socioeconomic difficulties befalling those who are occupationally impaired. Bibliographic citations in this paper offer a stepwise approach to the literature and identify the important sources applicable to dermatology.

A comparative evaluation of text formats in a medical school course.

Information mapping, a system of instruction design for categorizing, sequencing and graphically presenting printed information for highly technical communication in business, seemed ideally suited for presenting the technical procedures of the general screening physical examination to medical students. To evaluate the impact of this new text format one half of the class received a conventional text for those procedures and the other half used an information mapped text. Cognitive test scores were not significantly different. However, the information mapped text was rated significantly more favorably on six dimensions. Students using the mapped text also spent significantly more time studying it than those using the conventional text.

Mendelism in early 20th-century American dermatology.

Now, almost a century ago since Mendel's work was rediscovered, is a propitious time to review the appearance of mendelian concepts in American dermatology. In our world of instantaneous and sometimes overwhelming dissemination of new information and the apparent rapid incorporation of new knowledge into our specialty, it is useful to examine how heredity was incorporated in the dermatologic literature in the first 25 years of the 20th century. The dermatologic literature serves as a surrogate for the thought of the era.

Preparing and updating systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health care.

People providing health care tend to turn to review articles rather than reports of primary research when seeking information to guide their practices. For this reason, the process of reviewing the results of primary research must respect scientific principles. Reviews must be kept up to date and disseminated in appropriate ways to the people who make decisions about health care, including policy makers, practitioners, and users of the health services. This article describes the methods developed and used in an attempt to address these challenges for care during pregnancy and childbirth.

Citation analysis of faculty publication: beyond Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index.

When evaluated for promotion or tenure, faculty members are increasingly judged more on the quality than on the quantity of their scholarly publications. As a result, they want help from librarians in locating all citations to their published works for documentation in their curriculum vitae. Citation analysis using Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index provides a logical starting point in measuring quality, but the limitations of these sources leave a void in coverage of citations to an author's work. This article discusses alternative and additional methods of locating citations to published works.
