Gametogenic count and histopathological effect of thorium nitrate and uranyl nitrate on mice testes.

Daily intraperitoneal administration of aqueous solution of 0.05 m mole/100 g b. wt. of uranyl nitrate and thorium nitrate has been observed for 7 days. Marked reduction in the seminiferous tubule diameter and gametogenic count was observed. Signs of testicular necrosis, exfoliation of germ cells, and karyolysis and karyorrhexis were seen in most of the tutubles. Mononucleate and polynucleate giant cells were also observed indicating prolonged pathological condition.

A comparison of the distributions of the actinides uranium and thorium with the lanthanide gadolinium in the tissues and eggs of Japanese quail: concentrations of uranium in feeds and foods.

Japanese quail were given UCl3 , UO2 (NO3)2, Th(NO3)4, or GdCl3 ( 153Gd -labeled) intravenously in aqueous solution. Distribution of Th among the tissues was as for Gd; distributions of U(III) and U(VI) were markedly different. For example, 18 hr after a 1.5 mumol/100 g dose, accumulations in females were: growing oocytes, U(III) 2.0%, U(VI) 2.4%, Th 27.7%, Gd 44.7%; leg bones, U(III) 12.5%, U(VI) 14.1%, Th 1.2%, Gd 1.4%; liver, U(III) 1.1%, U(VI) 1.1%, Th 44.0%, Gd 40.2%. Whole body losses by 18 hr were: females, U 24%, Th 14%, Gd 4%; males, U 72%, Th 23%, Gd 1%. Cumulative depositions in yolks of eggs laid over 8 days were: U(III) 1.9%, U(VI) 1.7%, Th 57.3%, Gd 46.8%. The distribution of U in quail may be atypical of actinides . Concentrations of U in various feeds, foods, and mineral supplements ranged from 169 micrograms/g in a phosphate fertilizer for farm use to below the lower detectable limit of .01 microgram/g in many foods intended for human use. Two batches of the game bird laying ration supplied to the quail colony contained 3.05 and 4.42 micrograms U/g. Body burdens of 3.5 micrograms U/bird for noninjected quail were attributed to the U content of this feed.

[Dependence of the elastic characteristics and contractile activity of the rat tail artery on the transmural difference of potentials].

Change in the diffuse portion of the double electric layer at the blood-vascular wall border under the effect of thorium nitric oxide and heparin affects the tone and contractile ability of the rat tail artery: thorium diminishes the vessel rigidity and the amplitude of its contractile response, whereas heparin augments the rigidity as well as the amplitude of the response. Thorium nitric oxide also diminishes rigidity of the vessel connective tissue skeleton. The difference of potentials between the vessel lumen and its wall seems to be capable of affecting the contractile apparatus of the smooth muscle cells by means of activation of potential-sensitive ionic channels.

[The action of 232Th separately and in combination with heavy and alkaline metal salts on Tradescantia (clone 02)].

The action of 232Th-nitrate in concentration 0.09, 0.18 and 0.36 mg/l (counting on 232Th ion) on water cultures of Tradescantia (clone 02) was investigated. It was found that all investigated concentrations of 232Th showed statistically significant genotoxic effect and increased level of morphological abnormal cells in the stamen hairs of Tradescantia in the absence of modifying action of other metal ions. Synergistic toxic interaction was found between the 232Th in concentration 0.18 mg/l and metal ions for all samples of thawed water. Synergistic genotoxic effect of the combined action of these factors was revealed only at the low total contents of ions of heavy and alkaline metals in thawed water samples. The observed synergistic effects of the combined action of 232Th and metal ions should be taken into account when controlling the radionuclide level in the environment.

[Histomorphological study of mice inbred CBA liver under combined chronic influence of low dose gamma radiation and incorporated thorium nitrate].

We studied histomorphology of the CBA line mice liver after 30 and 90 days of the low dose gamma-radiation influence combined with incorporated Th(NO3)4 in doses 0.03; 0.1; 0.3 grams per kilogram of the living mouse weight. Morphophysiological and morphometric changes were shown. The liver mass and index were significant by increased after 30 days influence. The same changes after 90 days influence were not shown. The morphometric parameters (dynamics of double-nucleus and polyploid hepatocytes, nucleoluses numbers) gave evidence of the liver energy disbalance.

[Cytogenetic effects of separate and combined action of 232Th and Cd nitrates on Allum cepa root meristem cells].

Effects of separate and combined action of 232Th and Cd on Allium cepa root tip cells were investigated. It has been shown that cytogenetic effects of 232Th results mainly from its ability to induce genome damages. Cadmium in the examined concentration does not induce chromosomal vagrants, and this effect is not intensified by the combined action of 232Th and Cd (with 232Th). Cd induced increased aberrations of chromosome type frequency (1.5 times more than in control group), and fragment frequence, while mitotic index was significantly decreased. While taking into consideration the frequency of anaphase--telophase damages, and the number of aberrations per cell, the combined effects of 232Th and Cd may be considered as synergic. The aberration type ratio, frequencies of bridges and fragments, and also the level of proliferative activity of 232Th and Cd in the presence of both ions were similar with the corresponding parameters obtained when Cd acted alone. Possible mechanisms of formation of 232Th and Cd synergic effects are discussed.

[Synthesis and spectral characterization of U(VI) and Th(IV) complexes of thenoylpyrazolone-ethylenediamine].

Two novel bis-schiff base complexes [UO2 (PMTHP)2en] and [Th(PMTHP)2en(NO3)2] have been synthesized, where (PMTHP)2en = N,N'-bis[(1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-oxo-5-pyrazolinyl)- 2-thenoylmethylidyne] ethylenediamine, and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and molar conductance measurements. The results show that the bis-schiff base is a quadridentate ligand and the nitrate a bidentate ligand, and the uranyl and thorium ions exhibit coordination of six and eight in the complexes, respectively.

[Comparative evaluation of early and long-term plant cell reactions under the combination of short-time and chronic impact of 232Th and Cd ].

The short-time (30 hours) and chronic (30 days) 232Th and Cd combined effects on Tradescantia and Allium cepa plants were investigated. The 232Th ion concentration was equal to 0.18 mg/l and Cd ion--to 60 mg/l. The early response of both somatic and generative plant cells on Th and Cd combined action was shown to appear in synergic increase of cytogenetic damage frequency. The level of genotoxic and cytotoxic long-term effects turned out to be lower than of the additive one both under the chronic as under the short-time action. These similar in result responses occur on different biological organization levels: in the case of short-time action the effects observed are detected by the intracellular compensatory processes, and in the case of chronic action by the mass death of the most damaged buds in the inflorescence.

[Toxic and cytogenetic effects induced in Allium cepa with low concenrations of Cd and 232th].

232Th (7.76 x 10(-7) M) and Cd (0.89 x 10(-8) M) in concentrations which do not exceed officially prescribed standards when entering with water do not increase the frequency of chromosome aberrations in comparison with the control. Such concentrations do not cause toxic effects in plants on the levels of tissues and of the whole organism but they do display their activity on the cell level damaging division spindle. Dependence "cadmium concentration-effect" is not linear for any type of cytogenetical damages. At the concentration of cadmium 0.89 x 10(-7) M its influence on formation of division spindle is weakened and the frequency of chromosome aberrations is reducing in comparison with the control and with the effects induced at lower concentrations of cadmium in solution (0.89 x 10(-8) M). Cadmium in high concentration (5.34 x 10(-5) M) causes significant toxic and mutagenic effects.

[The peculiarities of separate and combined exposure to low dose-rate gamma-radiation and 232Th nitrate on thyroid gland].

We studied the effects of both: of the separate and of the combined exposure to gamma-radiation (absorbed doses for 30 days were 1.4-1.8 cGy, for 90 days were 4.3-5.4 cGy) and 232Th nitrate (in concentrations 6.0; 20.0 and 60.0 mg/l) on the CBA line mice thyroid gland. Hat is shown the thyroid gland response to the combined exposure is significant in an appearance of non-linear effects of interaction. The intensiveness of the radiation influence (time and doses) is revealed to affect on the biological response direction in thyroid gland. The intensity of this effect was depended on the correlation between the radiation activity and the chemical components concentration. The dispersive analyses showed that all the studied factors caused structural changes in thyroid gland in this experiment, but the gamma-radiation influence causes the primary contribution.
