Construct validation of children's behavior problem dimensions: relationship to activity level, impulsivity, and soft neurological signs.

A construct validation study of dimensions of children's behavior problems was carried out with use of multiple linear regression. The Ss were 76 latency-aged boys in residential treatment. The dimensions involved were Conduct Disorder and Inadequacy-Immaturity. The predictor variables were activity level, impulsivity, and soft signs of neurological damage. Results indicated that Conduct Disorder was significantly predicted by activity level, in combination with impulsivity. Inadequacy-Immaturity was significantly predicted by activity level and soft signs. A third dimension, Personality Disorder, was found to be uncorrelated with the three predictor variables.

Structure-activity relationships in the development of hypoxic cell radiosensitizers. I. Sensitization efficiency.

The efficiency of 35 nitroaromatic and nitroheterocyclic compounds in radiosensitizing hypoxic Chinese Hamster cells in vitro was determined. The concentration C of the compound required to achieve an enhancement ratio of 1.6 was measured, and the redox and partition properties were quantified as the one-electron reduction potential at pH 7, E, and the octanol: water partition coefficient, P, respectively. Most of the compounds studied were 2-nitroimidazoles, but some 4- and 5-nitromidazoles, 5-nitrofurans and nitrobenzenes were investigated for comparison. Together with data for nine nitroimidazoles previously reported, the results were fitted to a structure-activity relationship of the form -log C = b0 + b1E + b2 log P + b3 (log P)2 using multiple linear regression analysis. Statistical tests showed that the coefficients b2 and b3 were not significantly different from zero and the simpler equation, obtained by omitting the terms in log P, explained 85 per cent of the variance in log C. Earlier reports that the radiosensitization efficiency of nitro compounds in vitro largely depends on the reduction potential were confirmed. The conclusive demonstration that P is unimportant in vitro is valuable in interpreting the results of experiments in vivo, where P is expected to have a much greater influence on biological response.

The relationship between infant mortality rates and medical care and socio-economic variables, Chile 1960-1970.

Infant mortality rates (IMR) have traditionally been considered useful as health status indicators, and changes in these rates are thought to reflect changes in both medical care services and socio-economic circumstances. In order to explore this relationship of IMR with medical core and socio-economic factors in a developing country, Chilean health zone data for the decade 1960--1970 were used to construct 25 variables which were then classified into groups representing antenatal-obstetric services, acute and preventive medical services and socio-economic variables. In an analysis which involved developing a series of linear multiple regression equations for each year of the decade 1960--1970 with IMR as the dependent variable, the percentage of births with professional attention proved to be the stronger variable.

Hospital cost per case: analyses using a statewide data system.

In this paper, we establish relationships between hospital cost per case and the independent variables; case mix complexity, case mix severity, factor input prices, and hospital characteristics. Two hundred and sixteen thousand discharges from Maryland's acute general hospitals are grouped into 383 Diagnostic Related Groups which are used to compute an information theoretic measure of case mix complexity. Multiple linear regression equations are developed which predict up to 88% of the variance of between-hospital cost per case. The most highly significant predictors of cost per case are complexity, patient age, proportion of high risk patients, average length of stay, and nonphysician salary levels. Two distinct groups of hospitals, metropolitan and rural, are defined and models are developed for each. We discuss the implications of these findings for the identification and regulation of unexpectedly high cost hospitals and for prospective cost per case reimbursement.

Childhood Economic Mobility and Systemic Inflammation Among Men Who Experienced Low Income in Toddlerhood: The Moderating Role of Trait Hostility.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood economic upward mobility (ie, increases in family income across childhood) may attenuate links between childhood poverty and systemic inflammation in adulthood, the extent of which may vary depending on inter-individual differences in personality characteristics, including hostility. METHODS: Men who experienced low income in toddlerhood (N=171) were followed prospectively into adulthood. Annual family income was collected 12 times when men were 1.5 to 17 years old. Men completed the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and had their fasting blood drawn to measure circulating levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) at age 32. Multiple linear regression analyses examined main and moderation effects of childhood economic upward mobility and adult hostility on CRP levels adjusting for income at 1.5 years, race, parent educational attainment, and adult income, education, waist circumference, and smoking status. RESULTS: Main effects were nonsignificant, but an interaction effect emerged. Counter to expectations, childhood economic upward mobility related to greater adult CRP as trait hostility decreased ( β =-0.203, P =.018). Simple slope analyses further revealed that childhood economic upward mobility was positively associated with CRP among men lower in hostility ( β =0.23, SE=0.09, P =.020) but was unrelated to CRP among men higher in hostility. Results of post hoc sensitivity analyses are also discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Counterintuitive findings suggest that for men who experience poverty in toddlerhood, the association between childhood economic upward mobility and adult CRP may be nuanced and even in the positive direction for men low in hostility, which aligns with work on unintended health consequences of upward mobility.

Species differences in the binding of compounds designed to fit a site of known structure in adult human haemoglobin.

1. Oxygen dissociation curves are reported for human haemoglobins A1, FII, FI, A1c and Raleigh (beta1 valine leads to acetylalanine) and for horse haemoglobin in the absence and presence of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG), or 4,4'-diformyl-2-bibenzyl oxyacetic acid, or the bisulphite addition compound of the latter. 2. These haemoglobins were selected because their amino acid sequences are different at the DPG receptor site of human adult deoxyhaemoglobin. 3. The size of the shifts of the dissociation curves are in the sequence expected from the postulated numbers of interactions made by each compound with each haemoglobin type, based on the assumption of a common receptor site for the three compounds. 4. Multiple linear regression analysis shows that the free energies of interaction of the compounds with the haemoglobins may be predicted, to a first approximation, by summing the number of ionic and covalent bonds predicted for each effector-receptor combination, a reversible covalent bond contributing about twice as much energy (-6.78 kJmol-1) as an ionic interaction (-3.14 kJmol-1).

Some relations between dissolution rates and physical parameters of a drug in aqueous micellar solutions of a non-ionic surfactant.

Dissolution rates of salicylic acid from a constant surface area into a series of aqueous micellar polysorbate 20 solutions at pH 1-0 to 4-0 have been measured using two different methods; a stirred beaker and a rotating disc technique. The micellar molecular weight of polysorbate 20 has been obtained from light scattering and differential refractometry data and used with other independently determined physical data to calculate diffusion coefficients of the diffusing species. Linear multiple regression analysis was used to assess the dependence of drug dissolution rate on the diffusion coefficient and the viscosity of the dissolution medium.

Factors affecting the binding of tricyclic tranquillizers and antidepressants to human serum albumin.

The linear free energy-related model for structure activity relations developed by Hansch & Fujita (1964) has been used to correlate the binding of tricylic tranquillizers and antidepressants to human serum albumin (HSA) with hydrophobic and electronic parameters. The parameters chosen being the chromatographic parameter (Rm) and the affinity of charge transfer complex formation (kc). The relative importance of these factors has been assessed by linear and multiple linear regression analysis. Results show that the major factor in binding is electronic with only a minor contribution from the hydrophobic parameter.

Subcellular distribution of nucleotide cyclases in rat intestinal epithelium.

The subcellular distributions of adenylate cyclase and guanylate cyclase were determined for the mature enterocyte from the rat duodenum. Brush-border and basolateral membranes were prepared from isolated cells by an analytical isolation procedure, and multiple linear regression analysis was used to obtain a quantitative estimate of the distribution of recovered cyclase activities between the brush borders and basolateral membranes. Adenylate cyclase was largely confined to the basolateral surface of the epithelium, whereas guanylate cyclase was found on the brush-border and basolateral membrane fractions in the ratio 2.4:1. There was no evidence for the presence of nucleotide cyclases in the cytosol. Guanylate cyclase in both the brush-border and basolateral membranes was stimulated by epinephrine, insulin, and Triton X-100, but not by carbachol. Adenylate cyclase was not influenced by epinephrine, but was markedly stimulated by NaF and vasoactive intestinal peptide. These results are discussed in relation to the effects of hormones on transport across the small intestine.

Regulation of cerebral blood flow in the ovine fetus.

The effects on fetal cerebral blood flow (Qc) of changes in the carotid arterial and sagittal sinus venous PO2, PCO2, and oxygen content were studied in the chronically catheterized ovine fetus in utero at 130-140 days of gestation. Forty-seven measurements of Qc were made in 20 fetuses with radioactive microspheres. In 11 of these animals, 84 measurements of cerebral arteriovenous differences of oxygen content were performed, permitting an indirect measurement of cerebral blood flow (Qc*), assuming a constant cerebral metabolic rate. Arterial and, in 11 animals, sagittal sinus blood was withdrawn for analysis of PO2, PCO2, oxygen content, and pH at the time of the flow measurements. Preliminary analysis showed the best predictor of Qc and Qc* to be the reciprocal of the arterial oxygen content (1/CaO2). Multiple linear regression analysis combining the effects of 1/CaO2 with arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) gave the following equations: Qc = 458.8 (1/CaO2) + 2.68 PaCO2 - 107.93 (R2 = 0.68); Qc* = 435.54 (1CaO2) + 2.20 PaCO2 - 75.03 (R2 = 0.86). As a result of the hyperbolic relationship between Qc (and Qc*) and CaO2, changes in CaO2 at the low levels found during intrauterine life exert an important influence on the fetal cerebral circulation.

Pulse rate-rectal temperature relationships during prolonged work.

Forty-six industrial workers performed a total of 653 1-h work bouts over a wide range of work rates )142-273 W/m2) and environmental temperatures (11-35 degrees C corrected effective temperature) in the summer and winter seasons. Simultaneous measurements of heart rates and rectal temperatures were made at the end of each work period, and the relationship between heart rate and rectal temperature was computed with standard multiple linear regression techniques. The overall regression equation is: heart rate (beats/min) = 29.3 (beats/min. degrees C) x rectal temperature (degrees C) - 988.6 (beats/min). The relationship is significantly altered by work rate and job- and season-acquired acclimatization of the subjects. These data suggest that the average heart rates of industrial workers during prolonged work can be predicted from rectal temperatures with a reasonable degree of confidence if the degree of acclimatization and work rates are known. For a rectal temperature of 38.0 degrees C the expected heart rate during prolonged work ranges from 109 beats/min in acclimatized men working at low rates to 143 for unacclimatized men working at heavy rates.

Responses of forearm blood flow to graded leg exercise in man.

To test whether the cutaneous vascular responses to exercise are influenced by the level of work, three strategies were followed. In each, forearm blood flow and esophageal temperature were measured throughout. In part I, the forearm blood flow-internal temperature relationships from separate sessions of steady-state exercise at different loads were compared. In part II, work load was varied between 50 and 150 W. Work load was raised or lowered 50 W every 5 min over 60-75 min. The third strategy was to examine the immediate change in forearm blood flow accompanying rapid, large increments or decrements in work load. The results do not support a graded response of the cutaneous circulation to exercise. In both the first and second protocols above, the relationship of forearm blood flow to internal temperature was not measurably altered by work load. Multiple linear regression analysis failed to reveal a consistent role for work load in part II. In the third protocol, there was no consistent or sustained response to an abrupt change in work load. Thus over the range of work loads used in this study there appears to be no major role for the level of work in the regulation of forearm skin blood flow other than through the effect on internal temperature.

Relation between blood pressure and renin, renin substrate, angiotensin II, aldosterone and urinary sodium and potassium in 574 ambulatory subjects.

Five hundred and seventy-four ambulatory subjects with blood pressures ranging from 94/58 to 250/145 mm Hg were studied on their usual dietary and sodium intake. Renin, renin substrate, angiotensin II, aldosterone and urinary sodium and potassium were compared with blood pressure to access the contribution of these variables to the blood pressure variance. Our analyses revealed that renin substrate was highly and positively correlated with diastolic blood pressure (r = +0.39; p < 0.00001) but all other components of the renin-aldosterone system exhibited a significant negative correlation with blood pressure. A highly significant relationship between potassium, the renin-aldosterone system and blood pressure was found but no such relationship could be demonstrated for sodium. Subjects with higher blood pressures had lower urinary potassium concentrations and lower potassium/creatine ratios. These findings raised the possibility of a significant pathogenetic relationship between potassium and high blood pressure. Multiple linear regression reveals that influences of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system can only account for less than 20% of the variance exhibited by the blood pressure in these subjects.

Low-Dose Radiation-Induced Expression of Exosomal miRNAs in the Serum of Medical Radiation Workers.

Objective: Long-term low-dose ionizing radiation may alter genomes and cause diseases. This study examined serum exosomal miRNA differences among radiation-exposed medical workers by work types. Methods: High-throughput sequencing screened serum exosomal miRNAs in diagnostic radiologists, interventional radiologists, and nuclear medicine doctors. qRT-PCR validated differentially expressed miRNAs. Results: 410 differentially expressed miRNAs, including 102 downregulated and 308 upregulated miRNAs, enriched in 15 KEGG pathways. Four miRNAs were validated. miR-30e-5p, miR-155-5p and miR-486-5p differed significantly among groups(P<0.01).The expression levels of these three miRNAs were lower in the nuclear medicine group than in the diagnostic group (0.25±0.05vs3.89±8.62,0.10±0.15vs7.03±15.75,0.37±0.39vs4.46±9.64;Z=3.542,3.335,9.859;P<0.01), whereas miR-155-5p was lower in the interventional group than in the diagnostic group(1.32±2.43vs 7.03±15.75;H=11.889,P=0.003), miR-486-5p was higher(9.54±19.39vs4.46±9.64; H=9.859,P=0.007). All four miRNAs showed higher expression in the 14-31-year work-experience group, and all four also showed age-dependent differences, with miR-30d-5p and miR-486-5p showing the age-related differences (P<0.01). Combined detection of the four miRNAs improved discrimination among occupational categories (AUC=0.784). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that sex was associated with all four miRNAs, whereas work type was associated with miR-30d-5p and miR-155-5p (P<0.05). Conclusion: Serum exosomal miR-30e-5p, miR-155-5p, and miR-486-5p are promising biomarkers for monitoring radiation-induced damage, supporting occupational protection and health management.

Identification of intragenic variants in pediatric patients with intellectual disability in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability in Latin America can reach a frequency of 12% of the population, these may include nutritional deficiencies, exposure to toxic or infectious agents, and the lack of universal neonatal screening programs. In 90% of patients with intellectual disability, the etiology can be attributed to variants in the genome. OBJECTIVE: to determine intragenic variants in patients with intellectual disability between 5 and 18 years old at Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño. METHODS: It is a descriptive cross-sectional study with convenience sampling. A total of 124 children diagnosed with intellectual disability were selected based on psychological test results and availability for whole exome sequencing. In addition, a chromosomal analysis of 6.55 M was performed on ten patients with a negative result in sequencing. Relative and absolute frequencies and measures of central tendency and dispersion were determined according to their nature. In addition, multiple linear regression and Poisson regression were used to determine the association between some clinical characteristics and the probability of occurrence in patients with positive results. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 6.3 (IQR = 5.95), males accounted for 57.3%, and 91.9% of the cases had mild intellectual disability. Exome sequencing determined the etiology in 30.6% of patients with intellectual disability, of which 52.6% were autosomal dominant inheritance. The most frequent genes found were MECP2, STXBP1 and LAMA2. A broad genotype-phenotype correlation was identified, highlighting the genetic heterogeneity of intellectual disability in this population. The presence of dermatologic lesions, dystonia, peripheral neurological disorders, and fourth finger flexion limitation were observed more frequently in patients with intellectual disability with "positive results". CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that one-third of patients with intellectual disability exhibit intragenic variants, highlighting the importance of genetic analysis for accurate diagnosis. The identification of genes such as MECP2, STXBP1, and LAMA2 underscores the genetic heterogeneity of intellectual disability in the studied population. These findings emphasize the need for genetic testing in clinical management and the implementation of early detection programs in Peru.

Determination of serum bilirubin by skin reflectance: effect of pigmentation.

A noninvasive optical technique by which serum bilrubin can be estimated from skin spectral reflectance measurements has been further investigated. The original work on 30 healthy, full-term white infants and an independent study on 14 white and 30 black infants demonstrate that the method has potential not only for clinical use, but also for the study of the transport of bilrubin to, from and within the skin. The objectives of the present study are to evaluate the method on a larger sample population with special attention to natural skin pigmentation effects and the development of a physical model of the tissue to explain the relationship between serum bilrubin concentration and skin reflectance. Reflectance spectra (380-800 nm) and concurrent serum bilirubin measurements were taken on a sample population of 58 white and 45 full-term black infants (1-3 days of age). Multiple linear regression analysis, comprised of six wavelengths gave a correlation coefficient, r = 0.831 for the white infant group. For the black infant group, a five wavelength analysis provided r = 0.877 with the standard error of estimate being +/- 1.46 mg/100 ml for both groups. The model for establishing a physical basis for the relationship shows that a transformed, normalized Kubelka-Monk function xi (460, 510, 420) is linearly related to serum bilrubin concentration. This function is determined from the spectral reflectance values at three wavelengths, 420, 460, and 510 nm. The wavelength combination is such that effects due to hemoglobin and melanin pigments are minimized. Regression analysis showed that r = 0.778 and r = 0.865 for the white and black infant groups, respectively, with standard error of estimates being +/- 1.4 mg/100 ml for both groups. Routine determinations of total serum bilrubin by laboratory methods have standard errors of estimate ranging from +/- 1 to 1.5 mg/100 ml. Thus, the method herein described shows that the relationship between skin reflectance and serum bilrubin in full-term infants is close to the acceptable limits for clinical use. Furthermore, this work shows that skin pigmentation does not obscure this relationship.

Moderate alcohol use during pregnancy and decreased infant birth weight.

Maternal alcoholism during pregnancy may result in severe prenatal growth deficiency. In this prospective study, the relationship of moderate maternal alcohol consumption to infant birth weight is explored. Subjects were 263 paying members of a health maintenance organization who delivered single live children. Their alcohol consumption before pregnancy, and in early and late pregnancy, was estimated. In order to control for smoking, which is strongly related to both infant birth weight and maternal alcohol use, the sample was selected so that similar proportions of smokers were represented in both light and heavier drinkers. Multiple linear regression was employed. A regression equation was computed for each of the three periods in which drinking was estimated. Independent variables entered into the equation were maternal age, height, parity, daily cigarettes, alcohol use in the period, and gestational age and sex of child. The regression of birth weight on these variables revealed a significant relationship (p less than or equal to .01) with alcohol consumption in two of the periods. Ingestion of an average of one ounce of absolute alcohol daily before pregnancy was associated with an average decrease in birth weight of 91 grams; the same amount ingested in late pregnancy was associated with a decrease of 160 grams. The associations were independent of the other variables entered into the equation, and in particular, of tobacco use.

The Impact of Chatbot Type and Normative Messaging on Chatbot Usage Intention Based on the Health Technology Acceptance Model: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Digital health tools, such as health chatbots, may improve access to scalable health support, but adoption remains inconsistent. Existing models do not fully integrate technology acceptance factors with health motivation factors relevant to digital health use. OBJECTIVE: This study proposed and tested the health technology acceptance model and examined whether normative message framing and chatbot type were associated with health motivation, technology acceptance, and intention to use a health chatbot. METHODS: In October 2025, we conducted a 4 × 2 between-participants online experiment with 1000 US adults recruited from a nationally representative YouGov panel. Participants were randomized to 1 of 8 conditions varying norm message type (self-oriented, peer-oriented, expert-oriented, or family-oriented) and chatbot type (AI-powered or rule-based) in a cancer prevention and genetic risk information scenario. Outcomes included descriptive norms, injunctive norms, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, self-efficacy, perceived ease of use, trust, privacy concerns, and usage intention. Data were analyzed using a multivariate ANOVA with Bonferroni-adjusted post hoc tests and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: Peer-oriented and family-oriented messages produced higher usage intention than expert-oriented messages, and peer-oriented messages also increased descriptive norms, injunctive norms, self-efficacy, and trust. AI-powered chatbots were associated with higher usage intention (P=.02) and greater trust (P=.008) than rule-based chatbots. In regression analyses, the model explained 50.8% of the variance in usage intention. Usage intention was positively associated with descriptive norms (β=0.087; P=.003), injunctive norms (β=0.078; P=.009), perceived susceptibility (β=0.051; P=.03), perceived benefits (β=0.253; P<.001), and trust (β=0.33; P<.001), and negatively associated with perceived severity (β=-0.047; P=.049) and privacy concerns (β=-0.11; P<.001). Perceived ease of use and self-efficacy were not significant predictors. CONCLUSIONS: The health technology acceptance model was a useful framework for explaining the intention to use a health chatbot by combining technology acceptance and health motivation constructs. Both social design features and chatbot design features shaped adoption-related beliefs, with peer-oriented and family-oriented framing and AI-powered chatbots showing particular promise. Trust and privacy concerns remained central determinants of intended use.
