Longitudinal fetal biometry of normal pregnant Melanesian Papua New Guineans to construct standards of reference for Papua New Guinea.

In a longitudinal study at the Port Moresby General Hospital Antenatal Clinic between May 1990 and December 1991, 1514 biparietal diameter (BPD), 1294 femur length (FL) and 1229 abdominal circumference (AC) measurements were made on 425 fetuses during normal pregnancy. Weekly mean values with 2 standard deviations were calculated for BPD, FL and AC between 12 and 42 weeks. Growth curves were also constructed. Ethnic origin, height, parity, weight gain per week and socioeconomic status made no difference to these measurements. The mean values for BPD were compared with those obtained from studies in Africa and Europe. No differences were found.

[Malignant melanoma of the choroid in vivo. Comparative biometry using RX scanner and MRI].

Uveal melanomas are unique among the malignant tumors of the eye investigated by MRI in that both T1 and T2 are relatively shortened due to the paramagnetic effect of melanin. Bearing in mind this property, we conducted a comparative study between MRI and CT in 11 patients with histologically proven choroidal malignant melanoma. The results of this study confirm that MRI is far superior to CT in both differential diagnosis and in determining the extent of the tumor which is crucial if conservative treatment is to be undertaken.

[Ultrasound biometry of the fetal lung--measurement planes and reference values].

The aim of the study is to present biometrical data of the fetal lung measured in real-time sonography in mid-pregnancy. In 313 healthy fetuses of singleton pregnancies between the 15th and 30th week of gestation the fetal lung was measured in the horizontal, sagittal and frontal cross-sectional planes. In each plane the lung was measured in the following levels: clavicula, heart at the atrioventricular level (four chamber view) and diaphragm, as well as the lung length. During observation time all parameters showed a significant linear increase (r2 > 0.9; p < 0.001). Furthermore we found a high correlation between the same lung measurements collected in the different planes. The intraobserver variability was 3-8%. Such references of different planes could be helpful for differentiation of a small (hypoplasia) or a large lung (malformation).

[Biometry of very short ocular bulbs].

The authors evaluate the postoperative refractive results of 53 patients with extremely short eyes (16.0-20.0 mm) after IOL implantation. As the SRK II formula underestimates the A-constant increase for very short eyes, the authors as a results of the analysis of the set of patients recommend the A-constant recalculation according to formula: A-constant increase = 0.429 x axl x axl - 18.732 x axl + 206.114 and then the calculation of emmetropizing IOL by SRK formula.
