Estimated maximum thyroid doses from 129I releases from the Hanford site for the years 1944-1995.

129I, a very long lived fission product, persisted in the environment after discharge from the chemical reprocessing plants at Hanford. The significance to human health is evaluated by considering the maximum possible impact it might have. Allowing the total production of 129I to be discharged to the air and considering the location where the maximally exposed individuals residue, the lifetime cumulative thyroid dose is calculated as a function of birth year. The maximally exposed individual at the maximum exposure location was born in 1954 and accumulates a thyroid dose between 1954 and 1995 of slightly over 9,000 microSv (900 mrem) at an average rate of 220 microSv (22 mrem) y-1. Over the same period of time, the soft tissue dose from background radiation due to both external and internal radiation is about 38,000 microSv (3,800 mRem).

[Results of radiation monitoring in Moscow region over 1957-2005].

The article contains data on radiation situation in Moscow region, characteristics of overall beta-activity of ambient air, fall-out density, radionuclide contents of foods. Radionuclides content of environment appeared to decrease by 2-3 orders. Individual doses of internal irradiation for Moscow population are 100 times lower than the levels legally set for technogenic sources.

Radionuclides in domestic and imported foods in the United States, 1983-1986.

Findings in the Food and Drug Administration's Radionuclides in Foods program are summarized for samples collected between October 1, 1982, and September 30, 1986. All radionuclide findings for Total Diet and reactor samples were either in Action Range I or low in Range II of the surveillance and control recommendations given by the Federal Radiation Council. The only long-range trend noted was a continuation of the general decline in dietary intake of 90Sr since 1961. Imported food samples were analyzed for contamination after the Chernobyl nuclear accident. The findings for imported foods indicate that the surveillance efforts successfully targeted contaminated foods, and that contamination levels were below levels of concern for all but one oregano and 3 cheese samples.

[The environment and health status of Ukraine's population before and after the Chernobyl AES accident].

Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the environment and human health during 5 years before and after the Chernobyl accident (1986) provided an original scheme and methods for hygienic assessment of the negative influence of environmental pollution on health. They were tested in the Kiev Region. The accident was found to essentially complicated the environmental and sanitary situation in the region and to negatively affect human health.
