A comparative view of the Myers-Briggs type indicator.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many family practice residency programs use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) in the process of resident advising. The purpose of this study was to validate the MBTI with an alternative personality evaluation instrument. METHODS: We evaluated 44 residents with both the MBTI and the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) and computed correlation coefficients. RESULTS: The highest correlations between the two tests were for the Extraversion/Introversion dimension of personality (r = -.71). The 16PF factors of Tough Poise, Independence, and Superego/Control were also significantly correlated with items on the MBTI. The Anxiety dimension of the 16PF yielded no significant correlations with the MBTI. CONCLUSIONS: The Extraversion/Introversion variables of the MBTI and 16PF are highly correlated. Other variables on the 16PF and MBTI are also correlated.

Are shy people reluctant to ask for help?

Examined the help-seeking behaviors of shy and not-shy men and women. In Study 1, Ss worked on an impossible task in the presence of a male or female confederate whom they were told had just successfully completed the task. Shy Ss asked for help no less frequently than did not-shy Ss overall, but they did seek help less frequently from opposite-sex confederates than from same-sex confederates. In Study 2, shy and not-shy men and women were required to call a man and a woman and ask them to complete a questionnaire. All respondents agreed to return the questionnaire. However, when shy Ss (compared with not-shy Ss) called opposite-sex respondents, fewer of the questionnaires were actually returned. When making their calls, shy Ss sounded somewhat less warm and confident than did not-shy Ss, and they also spoke less fluently. Fluency, in turn, predicted response rate for the shy subjects calling respondents of the opposite sex.

[Trial and temptation in the interpretation of accommodative paralysis as a psychosomatic manifestation].

An adolescent, presented during 24 months an intermittent bilateral accommodation palsy. All the clinical tests were negative; a few peculiar aspects of the patient's character incited us to carry out, in parallel, a psychological research. The young man proved to be a mixed introvert, with Oedipal and familial problems. The assumption that accommodation palsy could have a psychological--although objectively unprovable motivation--is not in contradiction with the psychological research.

Types of family practice teachers and residents: a comparative study.

A study of personality types using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was performed on family practice teachers and residents. The combined group was found to be different from the general medical population. There was a larger percentage of persons who tended to be practical, realistic, present-oriented, organized, and able to deal effectively with factual information. The majority were persons who enjoy seeing immediate results of actions and can made decisions quickly and effectively using whatever information is available. These personality types are similar to those found in the older field of general practice. The residents and faculty were similar in the above respects but a higher percentage of the residents tended to make judgments using impersonal logic and a factual basis for reaching decisions. The faculty, however, had a significantly higher percentage of types who make judgments by considering human values and understanding of people.
