Histopathology and epidemiology of condemnations due to squamous cell carcinoma in broiler chickens in North Carolina.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) lesions were confirmed by histopathology in 94% of 176 carcasses condemned for SCC during 8-hour shifts at four different processing plants. Lesions in the remaining carcasses were diagnosed as focal ulcerative dermatitis. SCC lesions were confined to the skin; no metastasis or invasion of underlying muscle was present. Monthly prevalence of SCC condemnations at processing was obtained from two plants for a 1-year period and from two additional plants for 3-year periods. Overall study prevalence of SCC varied between 0.03% and 0.09% of total condemnations. Servicemen were found not to have an effect on SCC condemnations for the only company that had these data available. Chronological trends were evaluated for SCC condemnations. A trigonometric model predicted 6-month cycles for one processing plant over a 3-year period. The same model was used to describe 6-month cycles present in the last 12 months of a 3-year observation period in a different processing plant. Chronologic trends were evaluated qualitatively for the two other processing plants.

Ascaridia dissimilis larval migration associated with enteritis and low market weights in meat turkeys.

A meat turkey ranch had a history of producing flocks with low market weights. Live bird samples and environmental samples from the ranch were collected over a period of eight months and analyzed at the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System-Turlock Branch. The disease condition consistently present was enteritis associated with Ascaridia dissimilis infection in birds from growout houses. After aggressive control measures for A. dissimilis were implemented, subsequent flocks reached expected market weights.

[Carbon dioxide stunning for the slaughter of turkeys].

In an experimental study on stunning of 460 turkeys in a CO2 enriched atmosphere (60-70% CO2 in air), as a more animal protecting and more economic alternative to conventional electrical stunning, the following results are obtained: all animals show respiratory arrest within 100 seconds. After being dipped in a CO2 enriched atmosphere for a few seconds the turkeys show head shaking and forced respiration which has to be considered as a strain the animals are conscious of. The meat hygienic results after CO2 stunning are much better than after electrical stunning.

Inactivation of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy agent by rendering procedures.

Bovine brain infected with the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent was used to spike material processed in pilot scale facsimiles of 12 rendering processes which are used within the European Union, and three which are not. The raw materials for experimental rendering represented those used in practice, and consisted of appropriate proportions of BSE-infected brain tissue, bovine or porcine intestine, and bovine bone. Meat and bone meal, and tallow were produced from the rendered tissues. Suspensions of all the meat and bone meal samples were assayed in inbred mice for BSE infectivity, and two of the tallow fractions were tested similarly. Four of the 15 processes produced meat and bone meal with detectable BSE infectivity. Neither of the tallow samples had detectable infectivity.

California National Animal Health Monitoring System for meat turkey flocks-1988-89 pilot study: management practices, flock health, and production.

A pilot project for a meat turkey National Animal Health Monitoring System was undertaken in California in 1988-89 to explore data gathering techniques and to estimate the frequency, magnitude, and variability of management, flock health (including administration of pharmaceuticals for prevention and treatment of disease), and production variables in order to facilitate planning for future food animal monitoring systems. Enteritis, which occurred in over one-third of the flocks, and colibacillosis, which occurred in nearly one-quarter of flocks, were the most common diseases reported. Mycoplasma synoviae was reported in two flocks and Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma meleagridis each were reported in one flock. Total mortality rate in the sample flocks was 9.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 8.2%-9.8%). The tom-specific mortality rate was 10.9% (95% CI 9.8%-12.1%) and the hen-specific mortality rate was 6.6% (95% CI 5.7%-7.4%).

Enhancing health care to underserved populations: a model for the occupational nurse practitioner.

1. A nurse practitioner managed health unit for a meat packing/rendering company demonstrates a practice model for providing quality, cost effective health care to a specific population. 2. To gain management support for wellness and health promotion programs, unit cost effectiveness was demonstrated. 3. This model demonstrates success in the use of the nurse practitioner to provide care to a population that traditionally does not seek preventive or early health care.

Description of cellulitis lesions and associations between cellulitis and other categories of condemnation.

A total of 110 broiler flocks processed in a single processing plant in southern Ontario were studied for purposes of describing the cellulitis lesions and investigating possible associations between cellulitis and other categories of condemnation at the processing plant. Two hundred and ninety-five carcasses condemned for cellulitis were examined. They came from 65 of the 110 flocks. The lesions tended to be unilateral with most carcasses (87%) having one lesion. The majority of the lesions (92%) were located on the abdomen. Almost 65% of the lesions were large (> or = 8.1 cm2), and 27% were medium (2.1-8.0 cm2). On the basis of gross appearance, 69% of the lesions were classified as severe, 26% moderate, and 5% mild. Of 149 lesions examined histologically, 74% were classified as chronic, 21% ongoing, and 5% mild-acute. Condemnation data from the 110 broiler flocks were analyzed using Poisson regression. Simple relationships were examined between a count outcome (number of cellulitis-condemned carcasses per flock) and other categories of condemnation and average bird weight. Cellulitis was significantly associated with average bird weight (P = 0.0018), Escherichia coli-related conditions (SEROSITIS; P < or = 0.0001), ascites (P = 0.0004), cyanosis (P < or = 0.0001), valgus varus deformity (P < or = 0.0001), REJECT (combined carcass condemnations for bruising, mutilation, and contamination; P = 0.0003), and the interaction terms "average bird weight and ascites" (AVWT*ASCIT; P < or = 0.0001) and "average bird weight and cyanosis" (AVWT*CYAN; P < or = 0.0001). Average bird weight, SEROSITIS, ascites, cyanosis, valgus varus deformity, and AVWT*ASCIT were the only significant factors after adjusting for clustering. No association was observed between cellulitis and emaciation and dead on arrival. Variables significantly associated with cellulitis in the multivariate analysis could be considered as potential predictors. These predictors may share common risk factors predisposing broiler chickens to cellulitis.

Respiratory tract illness in meat wrappers.

A questionnaire survey was done in 152 Houston supermarkets to assess the prevalence of respiratory tract symptoms in meat wrappers exposed to the thermal decomposition fumes of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film wrap and in two supermarket control groups (checkers and meat cutters). Meat wrappers had increased respiratory tract symptoms; 12% of meat wrappers who smoked (vs 6% and 2% of controls) and 5% of meat wrappers who did not smoke (vs 0% and 0% of controls) had multiple respiratory tract symptoms. It is probable that a large number of meat wrappers have mild symptoms with some progressing to more severe respiratory impairment or clinical asthma.

Food poisoning caused by parahaemolytic and NAG vibrios after eating meat products.

At total of 15 subjects taken ill with food poisoining caused by parahaemolytic and NAG vibrios after eating boiled pork sausage and boiled veal stomach were examined. The meat products were secondarily contamined in the sausage factory due to the use od non-disinfected lake water which was found to be a natural medium of the vibrios. When the use of this water was prohibited, the contamination of the factory and the meat products disappeared and no further cases of food poisoning due to meat products were notified. The disease has a toxic character, runs a bening course and end after 2--3 days by restoration to full health.
