Tumor necrosis factor receptor levels are associated with carotid atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent evidence suggests that atherosclerosis is an inflammatory condition. Serum levels of inflammatory markers may serve as measures of the severity of atherosclerosis and risk of stroke. We sought to determine whether tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and TNF receptor levels are associated with carotid plaque thickness. METHODS: The Northern Manhattan Stroke Study is a community-based study of stroke risk factors. For this cross-sectional analysis, inflammatory marker levels, including TNF-alpha and TNF receptors 1 and 2, were measured by immunoassay in stroke-free community subjects undergoing carotid duplex Doppler ultrasound. Maximal carotid plaque thickness (MCPT) was measured for each subject. Analyses were stratified by age < 70 and > or =70 years. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were used to calculate the association between marker levels and MCPT. Multiple logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios and 95% CIs for the association of inflammatory markers with MCPT > or =1.5 mm (>75th percentile), after adjustment for demographic and potential medical confounding factors. RESULTS: The mean age of the 279 subjects was 67.6+/-8.5 years; 49% were men; 63% were Hispanic, 17% black, and 17% white. Mean values for TNF-alpha and its receptors were as follows: TNF-alpha, 1.88+/-3.97 ng/mL; TNF receptor 1, 2.21+/-0.99 ng/mL; and TNF receptor 2, 4.85+/-2.23 ng/mL. Mean MCPT was elevated in those in the highest quartiles compared with lowest quartiles of TNF receptor 1 and 2 (1.24 versus 0.79 mm and 1.23 versus 0.80 mm, respectively). Among those aged < 70 years, TNF receptor 1 and 2 were associated with an increase in MCPT (mean difference=0.36 mm, P=0.01 for TNF receptor 1 and mean difference=0.10 mm, P=0.04 for TNF receptor 2). After adjustment for sex, race-ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, LDL cholesterol, smoking, and body mass index, associations remained (mean difference=0.36 mm, P=0.001 for TNF receptor 1 and mean difference=0.09 mm, P=0.051 for TNF receptor 2). There was no association for TNF receptors in those aged > or = 70 years old and no association for TNF-alpha in either age group. Among those aged < 70 years, each unit increase in TNF receptor level increased the odds of the participant's having MCPT > or =1.5 mm (adjusted odds ratio=4.7; 95% CI, 1.7 to 15.4 for TNF receptor 1; odds ratio=1.9; 95% CI, 1.3 to 2.9 for TNF receptor 2). CONCLUSIONS: Relative elevation in TNF receptor levels, but not TNF-alpha, is associated with carotid atherosclerosis among individuals aged < 70 years in this multiethnic, urban population. Chronic subclinical infection or inflammation may account for this association, and modification of these inflammatory pathways may provide a novel approach to stroke prevention.

The Anticholinergic Drug Scale as a measure of drug-related anticholinergic burden: associations with serum anticholinergic activity.

Anticholinergic Drug Scale (ADS) scores were previously associated with serum anticholinergic activity (SAA) in a pilot study. To replicate these results, the association between ADS scores and SAA was determined using simple linear regression in subjects from a study of delirium in 201 long-term care facility residents who were not included in the pilot study. Simple and multiple linear regression models were then used to determine whether the ADS could be modified to more effectively predict SAA in all 297 subjects. In the replication analysis, ADS scores were significantly associated with SAA (R2 = .0947, P < .0001). In the modification analysis, each model significantly predicted SAA, including ADS scores (R2 = .0741, P < .0001). The modifications examined did not appear useful in optimizing the ADS. This study replicated findings on the association of the ADS with SAA. Future work will determine whether the ADS is clinically useful for preventing anticholinergic adverse effects.

Serum soluble markers of immune activation and disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

We investigated a possible association between markers of immune activation and disease activity in 52 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Serum concentrations of neopterin, beta-2-microglobulin, 55 kD-type soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor, soluble interleukin-2 receptor and soluble CD8 were compared to the Index of European Consensus Lupus Activity Measurement (ECLAM). All markers of immune activation, except sCD8, significantly correlated with ECLAM. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis revealed erythrocyte sedimentation rate and neopterin to correlate best with ECLAM (multiple correlation coefficient = 0.74, P < 0.001). The study shows that serum neopterin concentrations are a useful independent index for disease activity in SLE. The finding of enhanced concentrations of various parameters of immune activation in patients confirm a role of the T cell and macrophage activation in the pathogenesis of SLE.

Gene-environment interaction in hypertension, stroke and atherosclerosis in experimental models and supportive findings from a world-wide cross-sectional epidemiological survey: a WHO-cardiac study.

1. Genetic rat models of hypertension, such as spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and in particular, stroke-prone SHR (SHRSP) are useful models for research on the genetic pathogenesis, gene-environment interaction and control of environmental factors for the prevention of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases (CVD). 2. Since recent genetic analysis of hypertension in SHRSP indicated that one of the hypertensive genes related to salt-induced blood pressure (BP) rise was linked with the gene of the angiotensin-converting enzyme, gene-environment interaction is important in the humoral, neural, vascular and nutritional mechanisms of hypertension and CVD. 3. Extensive experimental studies in SHRSP by the authors have demonstrated nutritional factors counteracting directly or indirectly against the adverse effect of excess salt intake, such as K, Mg, Ca, dietary fibres, protein, some amino acids and fatty acids, etc.; they are therefore effective in preventing stroke, the typical complication of hypertension. 4. Experimental atherosclerotic models were established in SHRSP, which indicated also a gene-environment interaction in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis at the cellular level of vascular smooth muscle cells. Excess salt intake accelerated cholesterol absorption from the intestine to induce arterial fat deposition as well as to active platelet aggregation by the mechanism of increased intracellular Ca2+ mobilization. 5. Based on such experimental findings on the hypertension and related CVD prevention, a cross-sectional multicentre epidemiological 'CVD and Alimentary Comparison' Study (WHO-CARDIAC Study) was designed to assess the relationship of biological markers of dietary factors with BP ('core' study) and major CVD mortalities ('complete' study) and has been successfully undertaken for the past 8 years in co-operation with 54 centres in 23 countries. 6. The results of 'core' study so far obtained by cross-centre simple linear regression analysis demonstrated adverse effects of body mass index and salt intake on BP in men and possible beneficial effects of Mg by within-centre multiple linear regression analysis. 7. Preliminary cross-centre simple linear regression analysis of the 'complete' study indicated a positive correlation of serum cholesterol levels and negative correlation of serum phospholipid poly-unsaturated to unsaturated fatty acid ratios and 24 h urinary taurine excretion with coronary heart diseases mortality; a positive correlation of 24 h urinary Na and Na/K ratios and a negative correlation of serum cholesterol levels with stroke mortalities was indicated. 8. These epidemiological data confirmed mostly the applicability of experimental findings to the nutritional prevention of hypertension and CVD prevention.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Determinants of focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis in the rat after renal ablation. Evidence for involvement of macrophages and lipids.

The present study was undertaken to estimate the relative impact of a number of clinicopathologic and glomerular structural changes on severity and composition of focal and segmental glomerular sclerosis (FGS) in rats subjected to renal ablation. Groups of eight 1 1/2-nephrectomized (Nx) and sham-operated (Sh) male Wistar rats were studied at intervals of 2, 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks. At sacrifice, kidney tissue was embedded in glycolmethacrylate to achieve optimal morphology for light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and morphometry. FGS lesions were defined by the presence of focal and segmental glomerular scarring and collapse of the glomerular tuft with increased mesangial cellularity (MC), mesangial matrix expansion (MME), and adhesions between the tuft and Bowman's capsule (Adh). The severity of FGS and extent of MC, MME, and Adh was graded seimquantitatively to establish an injury score. The dependence of FGS injury score and of the scores of MC, MME, and Adh on a variety of clinicopathologic and glomerular structural alterations, taking account of possible correlations among them, was estimated with partial correlation and multiple linear regression analysis. The structural parameters included hyalinosis (H, PAS stain), glomerular lipid deposits (GLD, Oil Red O stain), glomerular volume expansion (GVE, morphometry), glomerular cellular proliferation (labeling of S-phase cells by 5 bromo-2'-deoxyuridine, BrdU)--and glomerular influx of macrophages (m phi), T cells, natural killer cells, and granulocytes (immunohistochemistry with mouse monoclonal antibodies). The clinicopathologic variables were urinary protein excretion (UP), fasting serum cholesterol levels (FChol), body weight (BW), total wet kidney weight (KW), heart weight (HW), and systolic blood pressure (SBP). The best fitting linear regression model, explaining 91% of the total variation of the FGS injury score (multiple r2 = 0.91), included UP as the main clinical, and H as the main structural variable. MC was explained best by BrdU incorporation (multiple r2 = 0.77). The optimal regression model describing MME contained the variables H, m phi, and FChol (multiple r2 = 0.84). The extent of Adh formation was optimally described by UP, m phi, and FChol (multiple r2 = .88). In conclusion, although none of these statistically significant associations indicate causal relationships, they identify - in addition to UP, H, and cellular proliferation - FChol as a major clinical determinant and glomerular m phi influx as a major structural alteration associated with FGS in the setting of renal ablation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Ethnicity, environment and salt-sensitivity in cardiac study: epidemiological implications for prevention.

1. An association between Na and blood pressure (BP) was studied in the Cardiovascular Diseases and Alimentary Comparison (CARDIAC) Study, an international cross-sectional epidemiological study, involving 55 populations from 25 nations. 2. The partial regression coefficient of BP against 24 h urinary Na was calculated in a multiple linear regression model, by adjusting other confounding factors. This demonstrated different distribution in each of several groups stratified according to their ethnicity and geographical location. 3. The relationship of urinary K to BP regression against urinary Na excretion was investigated to clarify its role in the association of Na with BP. 4. Urinary Na/K ratio showed a significant inverse linear relationship with the regression coefficient of BP on urinary Na excretion among seven Japanese populations. 5. The effect of K was to increase urinary Na excretion, as the ratio of Na/K might modify the association between Na and BP.

Panel studies of acute health effects of air pollution. II. A methodologic study of linear regression analysis of asthma panel data.

Panel studies relating illness, such as asthma attacks, cardiopulmonary symptoms, and acute respiratory symptoms, to daily air pollution and weather are important in environmental epidemiology. A study of the practical robustness of multiple linear regression procedures, which have been the preferred statistical models in analyses, is presented. The study is based on data from three asthma panels in Chattanooga, Tennessee, collected in 1972-1973. Linear regression models, commonly used, which incorporate only minimum temperature and an air pollutant were found to be potentially misleading; such models are highly sensitive to reporting trends in the data and do not correct adequately for weather variables. Temporal and spatial control strategies were employed and proved to be useful in detecting problems in the data due to undiscovered intervening variables. True day-to-day relationships estimated by a pair-day analysis were frequently inconsistent with "daily" effects estimated by the usual regression models and suggested that, in fact, the asthma panel data contained no useful information concerning day-to-day relationships.

Apolipoprotein B, ratio of total cholesterol to HDL-C, and blood pressure in abdominally obese white and black American women.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the association of apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL) with blood pressure in abdominally obese white and black American women. We also sought to determine if there are ethnic differences in blood pressure values that could be explained by differences in mean values of ApoB and TC/HDL. METHODS: Data (n = 1844) from the Third US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used in this study. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference (WC) of > or =88cm or having WC greater than what was expected as predicted from residuals obtained from linear regression of WC on BMI. Bi-variate Pearson's correlation analysis was used to quantify the degree of association of ApoB and TC/HDL with blood pressure and other lipids. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the independent contribution of ApoB and TC/HDL to blood pressure, adjusting for age, total cholesterol, alcohol intake, and smoking. To determine ethnic differences in blood pressure values associated with ApoB or TC/HDL, dummy variables were used to compare blacks with whites fitted in multiple regression models, while adjusting for age, total cholesterol, alcohol intake and smoking. RESULTS: Elevated ApoB was positively associated with diastolic and systolic blood pressure (DBP/SBP) in blacks and whites, independent of age, total cholesterol, alcohol intake and smoking (P < 0.01). Elevated TC/HDL was also positively associated with increased DBP and SBP in whites (P < 0.05). For the same value of ApoB and TC/HDL whites had higher values of DBP and SBP than blacks, adjusting for confounding variables. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with TC/HDL, ApoB was more strongly associated with DBP and SBP in both abdominally obese white and black women. Since ApoB is associated with hypertension, the combination of elevated ApoB and hypertension may identify a group of patients with more marked risk of vascular disease, thus, warranting further investigation.

L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate as a cysteine precursor: efficacy for growth and hepatic glutathione synthesis in chicks and rats.

Chick and rat experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate (OTC) as a cysteine (Cys) precursor for growth and hepatic glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis. Isosulfurous graded increments of OTC and Cys were added to Cys-free purified amino acid diets that were adequate in methionine. Curvilinear responses to both Cys and OTC for chicks and rats were obtained. Hepatic GSH accumulated in chicks only at dietary Cys levels above 0.10%. In rats, hepatic GSH increased linearly as dietary Cys content increased from deficient to adequate and from adequate to excessive. Utilization of OTC by chicks was as efficacious as isosulfurous levels of Cys for growth and hepatic GSH biosynthesis. In rats, OTC was slightly inferior to Cys for growth and hepatic GSH biosynthesis. Exponential regression slope-ratio growth efficacy values for OTC were 78.5% for chicks and 70.2% for rats; multiple linear regression slope-ratio GSH biosynthesis efficacy values were 80.3% for chicks and 83.7% for rats. It is concluded that orally administered OTC is active as a Cys precursor.

A quantitative structure-property relationship for predicting drug solubility in PEG 400/water cosolvent systems.

PURPOSE: A quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) was developed to predict drug solubility in binary mixtures of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 and water. The ability of the QSPR model to predict solubility was assessed and compared to the classic log-linear cosolvency model. METHODS: The solubility of 122 drugs, ranging in log P from -2.4 to 7.5, was determined in 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% PEG (v/v in water) by the shake-flask method. Solubility data from 84 drugs were fit by linear regression using the following molecular descriptors: molecular weight, volume, radius of gyration, density, number of rotatable bonds, hydrogen-bond donors, and hydrogen-bond acceptors. The multiple linear regression model was optimized by a genetic algorithm guided selection method. The remaining 38 compounds were used to test the predictability of the model. RESULTS: QSPR-based models developed at each volume fraction with the training set compounds showed a reasonable correlation coefficient (r) of approximately 0.9 and a root mean square (rms) error of <0.5 log unit. The model predicted solubility values of approximately 78% of the testing set compounds within 1 log unit. The log-linear model was as effective as the QSPR-based model in predicting the testing set solubilities; however, many drugs, as expected, showed significant deviation from log-linearity. CONCLUSIONS: The QSPR model requires only the chemical structure of the drug and has utility for guiding vehicle identification for early preclinical in vivo studies, especially when compound availability is limited and experimental data such as aqueous solubility and melting point are unknown. When experimental data are available, the log-linear model was verified to be a useful predictive tool.

[Association of the DMFT index with socioeconomic and dental services indicators in the state of Paraná, Brazil].

This ecological study investigated the associations between dental caries, socioeconomic indicators, and the supply of dental services in the State of Paraná, Brazil, for the year 1996. Two types of information were collected: (1) data on caries prevalence (DMFT at 12 years) for the municipalities (or counties) in the State; (2) data on socioeconomic conditions and the supply of dental services. Based on simple linear regression analysis, the study demonstrated a significant correlation between the caries index in municipalities and various social and dental services supply indicators. Results of the analysis of multiple linear regression showed that one indicator of income inequality remained significantly associated with dental caries, demonstrating that the worst oral health conditions cannot be dissociated from income disparities. A significant negative correlation was observed between DMFT and the proportion of the population that received fluoridated water, principally in the municipalities with the worst income inequality indicators. This highlights the importance of fluoridation for the reduction of caries rates, as well as to attenuate the impact of socioeconomic inequalities on the prevalence of dental caries.

Vegetarianism and dental fluorosis among children in a high fluoride area of northern Tanzania.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis among vegetarian and nonvegetarian children and adolescents living in an area where dental fluorosis is endemic. DESIGN: An analytical cross-sectional retrospective study. SAMPLE AND METHODS: Children (n = 165) aged 6-18 years, from five schools in Arusha town were examined. The children had a life-long exposure to drinking water with 3.6 mg F/litre. The severity of dental fluorosis was assessed using the Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index (TFI). RESULTS: In the vegetarian group (n = 24), the prevalence of dental fluorosis (TFI score > or = 1) was 67%, while 21% had severe fluorosis (TFI score > or = 5). In the nonvegetarian group (n = 141) the prevalence of fluorosis and severe fluorosis was 95% and 35%, respectively. In bi-variate correlation analyses age, vegetarianism and a series of other factors related to childhood nutrition (meals per day, the use of home-made porridge, the use of fish, etc.) were significantly associated with the tooth prevalence of dental fluorosis (TPF, P < 0.05). Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses explained 30% of the variance in TPF; age 15% points and vegetarianism 13% points. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of developing dental fluorosis was seven times higher among nonvegetarians than among vegetarians. CONCLUSION: The significantly lower prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis among the vegetarian group compared to the nonvegetarians would seem to be related to diet.

Bayesian neural networks for aroma classification.

Bayesian Neural Networks (BNNs) are investigated to test their potential to distinguish between different aroma impressions. Special attention is thereby drawn on mixed aroma impressions, resulting from the flavor description of a single compound with more than one aroma quality. The structures of 133 pyrazine-derived aroma compounds as well as their aroma descriptions are selected for comparison. The information fed into the neural networks is based on molecular descriptors calculated from the geometrically optimized chemical structures. While in the case of the Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) the networks' output consists of a categorical variable, the output for the General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) is defined in a numerical way. The best models attain comparable performance with a correct prediction of 90.8% of the cases for PNN and 89.9% for GRNN, respectively. Comparison of the BNN results to those obtained by Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) points out that the nonlinear methods work significantly better on the studied problem and that BNNs can be applied to multiple-category problems in structure-flavor relationships with good accuracy.

Respiratory symptoms and lung function in two prebake aluminum smelters.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory symptoms are known to occur in some aluminum smelter employees working in the potroom department but little is known about the respiratory health of employees in other departments. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of work-related respiratory symptoms and levels of lung function in different departments of two aluminum smelters compared to administration employees. Multiple logistic regression was performed with each of four work-related symptoms as outcomes and multiple linear regressions were performed with FEV1 and FVC as outcomes. RESULTS: There were 1,529 male participants in the two smelters representing a response rate of 89.6%. After adjusting for age and smoking, work-related respiratory symptoms were reported significantly more often among the ingot mill, anode, and potroom groups in Smelter A. In Smelter B, ingot employees were more likely to report work-related wheeze and potroom employees were more likely to report work-related rhinitis. Symptoms tended to increase with increasing time in the potrooms but were more likely to occur in new employees in the ingot mill and anode process groups. After adjusting for age, height, and smoking, there were no significant differences between the process groups for either FEV1 or FVC at Smelter A, and at Smelter B potroom employees had slightly greater FEV1 and FVC than the administration employees. CONCLUSIONS: Work-related respiratory symptoms among aluminum smelter workers are not reported only by potroom employees but also by ingot mill and anode employees.

QSAR analysis of meclofenamic acid analogues as selective COX-2 inhibitors.

The use of quantitative structure-activity relationships, since its advent, has become increasingly helpful in understanding many aspects of biochemical interactions in drug research. This approach was utilized to explain the relationship of structure with biological activity of selective COX-2 inhibitors. The enormity of the COX-2 discovery is reflected in the unprecedented speed at which research laboratories have sought to validate its clinical implications. Presented herein is a series of 21 derivatives of meclofenamic acid with selective COX-2 inhibitory activity. Several statistically significant regression expressions were obtained for both COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition using sequential multiple linear regression analysis method. Two of these models were selected and validated further, which revealed the importance of Kier molecular flexibility index for COX-2 inhibitory activity and the number of hydrogen bond donor atoms for COX-1 inhibitory activity. Additionally, linear correlation of molecular flexibility with COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitory activities revealed that flexibility of molecules at COX-2 active site can improve the selectivity of COX-2 inhibitors.

Use of segmental tissue Doppler velocity to quantitate exercise echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: A quantitative technique is required to reduce the subjectivity and improve the reproducibility of stress echocardiography. Tissue Doppler imaging may offer these benefits, but its feasibility with exercise echocardiography (ExE) is undefined. This study sought the determinants of the exercise tissue Doppler velocity (TDV) response and the feasibility and accuracy of color TDV during ExE. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifteen volunteers and 85 patients (age 60 +/- 10 years, 19 women) with known or suspected coronary artery disease were studied with standard 2-dimensional (2D) echocardiography and pulsed wave (PW) and color TDV before and after they underwent exercise treadmill testing. After the study PW TDV was measured in 6 basal segments, and off-line software was used to display color TDV data from all myocardial segments. Color TDV was compared with PW TDV in the basal segments at rest and stress with the use of linear regression. Color TDV in mid and basal segments was compared with wall motion on 2D echocardiography. The predictors of the TDV response to exercise were defined in a multiple linear regression. A logistic regression model was used to integrate clinical, exercise, and TDV variables for prediction of abnormal regional left ventricular function. Color and PW correlated well at rest (r = 0.81) and stress (r = 0.84), but PW was greater than color velocities at rest and stress. On the basis of 2D echocardiography, 752 myocardial segments were classified as normal in patients without evidence of coronary disease, 309 were normal in patients with abnormal wall motion in another territory, and 128 showed ischemia or scar. Segmental comparison of velocities assessed by color TDV showed that scar segments had a lower velocity than normal segments at rest and stress (P <.001). Ischemic segments had a lower peak TDV and less increment in velocity than normal segments. Heart rate, functional capacity, and regional dysfunction (scar or ischemia) were independent predictors of TDV at peak exercise. With the use of receiver operating characteristic analysis, the "correction" of TDV by these other variables increased the accuracy of the technique for the detection of regional left ventricular dysfunction. CONCLUSION: Color TDV is feasible during ExE. The correlation found between TDV and wall motion analysis of experienced observers indicates that TDV may be useful as a quantitative tool for interpretation of ExE.

Caregiver role strain: the contribution of multiple roles and available resources in African-American women.

While the roles of spouse, parent, and employee are normative for middle-aged adults, strain associated with each role may increase when the role of caregiver is added. The objectives of the present study were to determine: (1). what is the relationship between the caregiver's other roles (marital, parental, employee), specific combinations of these roles, and role strain; and (2). what is the relationship between available resources (economic, social, and personal) and role strain? The study participants were 148 African-American females who provided care to elderly family members. A model using multiple linear regression was analyzed. Caregivers with higher depressive symptomatology were more strained. However, neither additional multiple roles, nor a combination of roles were significantly related to role strain. African-American caregivers experienced a wide range of caregiver role strain. It would be a disservice to African-American caregivers to operate under the assumption that they provide care with little emotional cost. Continued within group analyses are needed to understand differential outcomes of these caregivers.

Relationship of menopausal status and sex hormones to serum lipids and blood pressure.

Arterial blood pressure and serum lipids were measured in 598 Chinese women aged 40-54 years. Menopausal or post-menopausal women had higher means of serum cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol, and had higher prevalence of hypertension, hypotension, hypercholesterolaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia than premenopausal counterparts. There were no differences in means of systolic and diastolic pressures among pre-menopausal, menopausal and postmenopausal women. Fat Synergic Index was first used in this study instead of Quetelex Index, and it was found that Fat Synergic Index is the strongest factor which affects serum cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol and systolic and diastolic blood pressure in multiple linear regression analyses. The role of oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone in three serum-lipid multiple regression models are different, but they are similar in systolic and diastolic blood pressure regression models. Conditional logistic regression analysis found that progesterone is a protective factor only and testosterone is one of the risk factors for hypertension.
