Assuming a hypothesis on the existence of certain mathematical analogy between the work of the genetic apparatus of Metazoa cells and that of universal computer a number of predictions are advanced (which can be in principle tested experimentally) as to the functioning of this genetic apparatus. Presence of multicellular regions in DNA without semantic information in the form of proteins is explained; possible results of damage of these regions are predicted, existence of some objects moving along DNA and possessing a number of unusual properties as compared with the studied objects of this type is predicted.

The basic principles of analogue and digital computers are reviewed and their application is described for the beat-to-beat analysis of the electrocardiogram using the AZTEC data reduction programme, for on-line haemodynamic analyses in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, coronary care unit, or postoperative ward, and for the clinical history and physical examination of the patient. The role of the computer in the management of cardiovascular disease is defined and its superiority in the collection and manipulation of complex data is emphasized. Its use in sparing staff the tedium of routine analyses of data will amply repay the initial cost of its installation.
I present an architecture for acoustic pattern classification using trinary-trinary template correlation. In spite of its computational simplicity, the algorithm and architecture represent a method which greatly reduces bandwidth of the input, storage requirements of the classifier memory, and power consumption of the system without compromising classification accuracy. The linear system should be amenable to training using recently-developed methods such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and we predict that behavior will be qualitatively similar to that of structures in the auditory cortex.

There are many tools to aid the clinician in making an accurate medical diagnosis including various imaging techniques and recording analogue signals from the patient. A new, inexpensive method of combining a video image and the instantaneous values of analogue waveforms is described here. The system, TVDATA, is reliable, compact and portable and has been successfully used in various clinical situations. The unit requires a standard video source, such as a camera, a TV monitor, a video recorder and the output from the analogue source or sources. The analogue data are converted into a digital signal and then displayed in a convenient part of the screen as a horizontal bar. Two types of data channel are available--uni- and bidirectional. A number of these channels can be used to record different analogue parameters and an inbuilt octal frame counter assists subsequent review of the video record.
