Gynecomastia in a mortician. A case report.

The fine needle aspiration (FNA) observations in a case of gynecomastia occurring in a mortician are described. The FNA smear showed cytomorphologic features typical of a gynecomastia. Morticians use an embalming cream that contains estrogens or estrogenlike compounds; these substances may be absorbed percutaneously and cause the development of gynecomastia. The mortician should be made aware of the potential risk of such an occupational exposure and development of the "embalmer's curse. "Recognition by the clinicians and cytopathologists of such an occurrence and its implications can help with the proper management.

[The incidence of ischemic heart disease in white South Africans cremated in Pretoria, 1978-1985].

The prevalence of ischaemic heart disease was studied in a population selected on the basis of an application for cremation by the next of kin. In the age group 35-44 years 15.2% of the deaths were ascribed to ischaemic heart disease (IHD), while the corresponding figure in the general population was 27.2%. In females in the age group 45-54 years IHD was responsible for 9.3% of the deaths; the corresponding prevalence in the general population was 18.3%. The figures for all age groups and both sexes were 22% for the cremation group and 24.5% for the general population. In the economically active group (20-65) years, the figures were 20.0% for the cremation group and 30% for the general population. There was no significant difference in the IHD deaths between Afrikaans-speakers and other language groups. These findings are not necessarily applicable to the general population, as the cremation group is not truly representative, but the consistently lower prevalence of IHD suggests that there is over-reporting of this disease in unmonitored death certification.

Cemetery vase breeding of dengue vectors in Manila, Republic of the Philippines.

Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti were found breeding abundantly in cement vases within cemeteries in Manila. Aedes albopictus dominated in cemeteries containing vegetation which provided both shade and plant debris for the vase water. The highest larval densities for both species were found from August to December, which is from mid-to-late rainy season. Aedes albopictus is unable to compete successfully with Ae. aegypti in residential areas with sparce vegetation and thus is very limited in its distribution within the city. Biting activity of both species is similar, with peaks occurring between 0530-0600 h and 1730-1800 h.

His honour'd bones.

A service pilot crashed in the sea 40 years ago and was killed. His body was washed ashore later, and buried in an honoured, but unnamed, grave. Recently, evidence suggesting that the body was that of the pilot came to light, and after further inquiries an exhumation for formal identification was authorized. The methods used in confirming this man's identity are described in the standard texts, and this brief account is given by permission of the next of kin in the hope that it may be of help to others faced with a similar problem.
